2008-10-30ftrace: nmi safe code modificationSteven Rostedt7-3/+154
Impact: fix crashes that can occur in NMI handlers, if their code is modified Modifying code is something that needs special care. On SMP boxes, if code that is being modified is also being executed on another CPU, that CPU will have undefined results. The dynamic ftrace uses kstop_machine to make the system act like a uniprocessor system. But this does not address NMIs, that can still run on other CPUs. One approach to handle this is to make all code that are used by NMIs not be traced. But NMIs can call notifiers that spread throughout the kernel and this will be very hard to maintain, and the chance of missing a function is very high. The approach that this patch takes is to have the NMIs modify the code if the modification is taking place. The way this works is that just writing to code executing on another CPU is not harmful if what is written is the same as what exists. Two buffers are used: an IP buffer and a "code" buffer. The steps that the patcher takes are: 1) Put in the instruction pointer into the IP buffer and the new code into the "code" buffer. 2) Set a flag that says we are modifying code 3) Wait for any running NMIs to finish. 4) Write the code 5) clear the flag. 6) Wait for any running NMIs to finish. If an NMI is executed, it will also write the pending code. Multiple writes are OK, because what is being written is the same. Then the patcher must wait for all running NMIs to finish before going to the next line that must be patched. This is basically the RCU approach to code modification. 2008-10-30nfsd: fix vm overcommit crashAlan Cox5-6/+23
Junjiro R. Okajima reported a problem where knfsd crashes if you are using it to export shmemfs objects and run strict overcommit. In this situation the current->mm based modifier to the overcommit goes through a NULL pointer. We could simply check for NULL and skip the modifier but we've caught other real bugs in the past from mm being NULL here - cases where we did need a valid mm set up (eg the exec bug about a year ago). 2008-10-30ecryptfs: fix memory corruption when storing crypto info in xattrsEric Sandeen1-7/+8
When ecryptfs allocates space to write crypto headers into, before copying it out to file headers or to xattrs, it looks at the value of crypt_stat->num_header_bytes_at_front to determine how much space it needs. This is also used as the file offset to the actual encrypted data, so for xattr-stored crypto info, the value was zero. So, we kzalloc'd 0 bytes, and then ran off to write to that memory. (Which returned as ZERO_SIZE_PTR, so we explode quickly). The right answer is to always allocate a page to write into; the current code won't ever write more than that (this is enforced by the (PAGE_CACHE_SIZE - offset) length in the call to ecryptfs_generate_key_packet_set). To be explicit about this, we now send in a "max" parameter, rather than magically using PAGE_CACHE_SIZE there. The total width of the command name plus spaces should be 8 characters, but were 7 and 9, respectively. With 8 chars, all commands are now lining up nicely. 2008-10-30mm: increase the default mlock limit from 32k to 64kKurt Garloff1-2/+2
By default, non-privileged tasks can only mlock() a small amount of memory to avoid a DoS attack by ordinary users. The Linux kernel defaulted to 32k (on a 4k page size system) to accommodate the needs of gpg. However, newer gpg2 needs 64k in various circumstances and otherwise fails miserably, see bnc#329675. Change the default to 64k, and make it more agnostic to PAGE_SIZE.
