2019-03-26doc: Fix typos and otherwise modernize checklist.txtPaul E. McKenney1-18/+25
This commit fixes some issues with Documentation/RCU/checklist.txt. Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@linux.ibm.com>
2019-03-26doc: Remove obsolete RCU update functions from RCU documentationPaul E. McKenney1-42/+34
Now that synchronize_rcu_bh, synchronize_rcu_bh_expedited, call_rcu_bh, rcu_barrier_bh, synchronize_sched, synchronize_sched_expedited, call_rcu_sched, rcu_barrier_sched, get_state_synchronize_sched, and cond_synchronize_sched are obsolete, let's remove them from the documentation aside from a small historical section. 2018-11-12doc: rcu: Encourage use of rcu_barrier in checklistJoel Fernandes (Google)1-2/+2
The checklist suggests rcu_barrier_bh() for RCU-bh and similarly for sched, however these APIs are now implemented as rcu_barrier() itself due to the RCU consolidation. This commit therefore corrects checklist.txt to encourage use of the underlying rcu_barrier() API. Signed-off-by: Joel Fernandes (Google) <joel@joelfernandes.org> Signed-off-by: Paul E. 2018-11-12doc: rcu: Remove obsolete checklist item about synchronize_rcu usageJoel Fernandes (Google)1-30/+7
Since the RCU mechanisms have been consolidated, the checklist item warning that synchronize_rcu() waits only for RCU readers is obsolete. This commit therefore removes this checklist item. 2018-11-12doc: rcu: Remove obsolete suggestion from checklistJoel Fernandes (Google)1-5/+1
call_rcu_bh is now implemented in terms of call_rcu, so the suggestion to use a different API for speed benefits is not accurate anymore. This commit updates the document accordingly. 2018-11-12doc: rcu: Add more rationale for using rcu_read_lock_sched in checklistJoel Fernandes (Google)1-1/+1
This commit explains why rcu_read_lock_sched is better than using preempt_disable. Signed-off-by: Joel Fernandes (Google) <joel@joelfernandes.org> Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@linux.ibm.com>

2017-06-08rcu: Remove SPARSE_RCU_POINTER Kconfig optionPaul E. McKenney1-4/+4
The sparse-based checking for non-RCU accesses to RCU-protected pointers has been around for a very long time, and it is now the only type of sparse-based checking that is optional. This commit therefore makes it unconditional. Reported-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Fengguang Wu <fengguang.wu@intel.com>
2014-04-29documentation: Record rcu_dereference() value mishandlingPaul E. McKenney1-4/+8
Recent LKML discussings (see http://lwn.net/Articles/586838/ and http://lwn.net/Articles/588300/ for the LWN writeups) brought out some ways of misusing the return value from rcu_dereference() that are not necessarily completely intuitive. This commit therefore documents what can and cannot safely be done with these values. Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Reviewed-by: Josh Triplett <josh@joshtriplett.org>
2014-02-17documentation: Document call_rcu() safety mechanisms and limitationsPaul E. McKenney1-5/+13
The call_rcu() family of primitives will take action to accelerate grace periods when the number of callbacks pending on a given CPU becomes excessive. Although this safety mechanism can be useful, it is no substitute for users of call_rcu() having rate-limit controls in place. This commit adds this nuance to the documentation. 2012-11-13rcu: Remove list_for_each_continue_rcu()Paul E. McKenney1-9/+8
The list_for_each_continue_rcu() macro is no longer used, so this commit removes it. The list_for_each_entry_continue_rcu() macro should be used instead. Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@linux.vnet.ibm.com>
2012-09-23rcu: Document SRCU dead-CPU capabilities, emphasize read-side limitsPaul E. McKenney1-0/+6
The current documentation did not help someone grepping for SRCU to learn that disabling preemption is not a replacement for srcu_read_lock(), so upgrade the documentation to bring this out, not just for SRCU, but also for RCU-bh. Also document the fact that SRCU readers are respected on CPUs executing in user mode, idle CPUs, and even on offline CPUs. Signed-off-by: Paul E. 2006-10-04[PATCH] srcu-3: RCU variant permitting read-side blockingPaul E. McKenney1-0/+38
Updated patch adding a variant of RCU that permits sleeping in read-side critical sections. SRCU is as follows: o Each use of SRCU creates its own srcu_struct, and each srcu_struct has its own set of grace periods. This is critical, as it prevents one subsystem with a blocking reader from holding up SRCU grace periods for other subsystems. o The SRCU primitives (srcu_read_lock(), srcu_read_unlock(), and synchronize_srcu()) all take a pointer to a srcu_struct. o The SRCU primitives must be called from process context. o srcu_read_lock() returns an int that must be passed to the matching srcu_read_unlock(). Realtime RCU avoids the need for this by storing the state in the task struct, but SRCU needs to allow a given code path to pass through multiple SRCU domains -- storing state in the task struct would therefore require either arbitrary space in the task struct or arbitrary limits on SRCU nesting. So I kicked the state-storage problem up to the caller. Of course, it is not permitted to call synchronize_srcu() while in an SRCU read-side critical section. o There is no call_srcu(). It would not be hard to implement one, but it seems like too easy a way to OOM the system. (Hey, we have enough trouble with call_rcu(), which does -not- permit readers to sleep!!!) So, if you want it, please tell me why... [josht@us.ibm.com: sparse notation] Signed-off-by: Paul E. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
