2007-10-20typo fixesMatt LaPlante1-1/+1
Most of these fixes were already submitted for old kernel versions, and were approved, but for some reason they never made it into the releases. Because this is a consolidation of a couple old missed patches, it touches both Kconfigs and documentation texts. 2007-10-19Combine instrumentation menus in kernel/Kconfig.instrumentationMathieu Desnoyers1-0/+2
Quoting Randy: "It seems sad that this patch sources Kconfig.marker, a 7-line file, 20-something times. Yes, you (we) don't want to put those 7 lines into 20-something different files, so sourcing is the right thing. However, what you did for avr32 seems more on the right track to me: make _one_ Instrumentation support menu that includes PROFILING, OPROFILE, KPROBES, and MARKERS and then use (source) that in all of the arches." 2007-10-16During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt1-1/+1
We have had complaints where a threaded application is left in a bad state after one of it's threads is killed when we hit a VM: out_of_memory condition. Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. 2007-07-19define new percpu interface for shared dataFenghua Yu1-4/+1
per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly. 2007-07-16Remove the last few UMSDOS leftoversJesper Juhl1-1/+0
The UMSDOS filesystem was removed back in 2.6.11, but some tiny bits stuck around. This patch removes the few remaining leftovers. The only things left behind after this are the entries in the CREDITS file and the ioctl number in Documentation/ioctl-number.txt as documentation. This third (hopefully final) version of the patch doesn't edit the arch/um/config.release file, since Jeff Dike pointed out to me that it should die completely, and asked me to remove it from my patch as he'll send in a seperate patch removing the file completely. 2007-02-11[PATCH] CRIS: local_irq_disable() is redundant after local_irq_save()Jiri Kosina2-2/+0
arch/cris/arch-v10/kernel/time.c::get_ns_in_jiffie() contains local_irq_disable() call after local_irq_save(). This looks redundant. arch/cris/kernel/time.c::do_gettimeofday() contains local_irq_disable() call after local_irq_save(). This looks redundant. 2007-02-11[PATCH] optional ZONE_DMA: introduce CONFIG_ZONE_DMAChristoph Lameter1-0/+4
This patch simply defines CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches. We later do special things with CONFIG_ZONE_DMA after the VM and an arch are prepared to work without ZONE_DMA. CONFIG_ZONE_DMA can be defined in two ways depending on how an architecture handles ISA DMA. First if CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA is set by the arch then we know that the arch needs ZONE_DMA because ISA DMA devices are supported. We can catch this in mm/Kconfig and do not need to modify arch code. Second, arches may use ZONE_DMA in an unknown way. We set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for all arches that do not set CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA in order to insure backwards compatibility. The arches may later undefine ZONE_DMA if their arch code has been verified to not depend on ZONE_DMA. 2007-01-11[PATCH] Change cpu_up and co from __devinit to __cpuinitGautham R Shenoy1-1/+1
Compiling the kernel with CONFIG_HOTPLUG = y and CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU = n with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE = y generates the following modpost warnings WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b7d) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b9c) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:__cpu_up from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141bd8) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c05) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c26) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c37) and 'cpu_up' This is because cpu_up, _cpu_up and __cpu_up (in some architectures) are defined as __devinit AND __cpu_up calls some __cpuinit functions. Since __cpuinit would map to __init with this kind of a configuration, we get a .text refering .init.data warning. This patch solves the problem by converting all of __cpu_up, _cpu_up and cpu_up from __devinit to __cpuinit. The approach is justified since the callers of cpu_up are either dependent on CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU or are of __init type. Thus when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y, all these cpu up functions would land up in .text section, and when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n, all these functions would land up in .init section. 2006-12-13[PATCH] getting rid of all casts of k[cmz]alloc() callsRobert P. J. Day6-6/+6
Run this: #!/bin/sh for f in $(grep -Erl "\([^\)]*\) *k[cmz]alloc" *) ; do echo "De-casting $f..." perl -pi -e "s/ ?= ?\([^\)]*\) *(k[cmz]alloc) *\(/ = \1\(/" $f done And then go through and reinstate those cases where code is casting pointers to non-pointers. 2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells1-0/+8
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. In light of the recent pagefault and filemap_copy_from_user work I've gone through all the arch pagefault handlers to make sure the inc_preempt_count() 'feature' works as expected.
