The meth ethernet driver for the SGI IP32 aka O2 is so far still an old style driver which does not use the device driver model. This is now causing issues with some udev based gadgetry in debian-stable. Fixed by converting the meth driver to a platform device. This is a big irq cleanup patch. * Use set_irq_chip() to register irq_chip. * Initialize .mask, .unmask, .mask_ack field. Functions for these method are already exist in most case. * Do not initialize .startup, .shutdown, .enable, .disable fields if default routines provided by irq_chip_set_defaults() were suitable. * Remove redundant irq_desc initializations. * Remove unnecessary local_irq_save/local_irq_restore, spin_lock. With this cleanup, it would be easy to switch to slightly lightwait irq flow handlers (handle_level_irq(), etc.) instead of __do_IRQ(). Though whole this patch is quite large, changes in each irq_chip are not quite simple. Please review and test on your platform. Thanks. 2006-10-02[PATCH] replace cad_pid by a struct pidCedric Le Goater1-1/+1
There are a few places in the kernel where the init task is signaled. The ctrl+alt+del sequence is one them. It kills a task, usually init, using a cached pid (cad_pid). This patch replaces the pid_t by a struct pid to avoid pid wrap around problem. The struct pid is initialized at boot time in init() and can be modified through systctl with /proc/sys/kernel/cad_pid [ I haven't found any distro using it ? ] It also introduces a small helper routine kill_cad_pid() which is used where it seemed ok to use cad_pid instead of pid 1. 2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar1-1/+1
This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. And finally having all the stuff done in a single place also means alot of bug potencial for the MT ASE is gone. The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113018709002036&w=2 We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage classes: "Blocking" chains are always called from a process context and the callout routines are allowed to sleep; "Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and the callout routines are not allowed to sleep. We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in kernel/sys.c. With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to handle these things in their own way.) There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code had to be changed to avoid it.) Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much less frequent that calling a chain. Here is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications. None of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder.
