Pull sysctl system call removal from Eric Biederman: "As far as I can tell we have reached the point where no one enables the sysctl system call anymore. It still is enabled in a few defconfigs but they are mostly the rarely used one and in asking people about that it was more cut & paste enabled than anything else. This is single commit that just deletes code. Leaving just enough code so that the deprecated sysctl warning continues to be printed. If my analysis turns out to be wrong and someone actually cares it will be easy to revert this commit and have the system call again. There was one new xtensa defconfig in linux-next that enabled the system call this cycle and when asked about it the maintainer of the code replied that it was not enabled on purpose. As of today's linux-next tree that defconfig no longer enables the system call. This system call has been deprecated almost since it was introduced, and in a survey of the linux distributions I can no longer find any of them that enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. The only indication that I can find that anyone might care is that a few of the defconfigs in the kernel enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. However this appears in only 31 of 414 defconfigs in the kernel, so I suspect this symbols presence is simply because it is harmless to include rather than because it is necessary. As there appear to be no users of the sysctl system call, remove the code. As this removes one of the few uses of the internal kernel mount of proc I hope this allows for even more simplifications of the proc filesystem. 2019-11-21powerpc/sysdev: drop simple gpioChristophe Leroy1-1/+0
There is a config item CONFIG_SIMPLE_GPIO which provides simple memory mapped GPIOs specific to powerpc. However, the only platform which selects this option is mpc5200, and this platform doesn't use it. There are three boards calling simple_gpiochip_init(), but as they don't select CONFIG_SIMPLE_GPIO, this is just a nop. Simple_gpio is just redundant with the generic MMIO GPIO driver which can be found in driver/gpio/ and selected via CONFIG_GPIO_GENERIC_PLATFORM, so drop simple_gpio driver. 2019-10-28powerpc/configs: Rename foo_basic_defconfig to foo_base.configMichael Ellerman3-0/+0
We have several "defconfigs" that are not actually full defconfigs they are just a base set of options which are then merged with other fragments to produce a working defconfig. The most obvious example is corenet_basic_defconfig which only contains one symbol CONFIG_CORENET_GENERIC=y. And in fact if you build it as a "defconfig" that one symbol ends up undefined, because its prerequisites are missing. There is also mpc85xx_base_defconfig which doesn't actually enable CONFIG_PPC_85xx. To avoid confusion, rename these config fragments to "foo_base.config" to make it clearer that they are not full defconfigs and are instaed just fragments that are used to generate real defconfigs. 2019-08-22powerpc/configs: Disable /dev/port in skiroot defconfigDaniel Axtens1-0/+1
While reviewing lockdown patches, I discovered that we still enable /dev/port (CONFIG_DEVPORT) in skiroot. /dev/port is used for old x86 style IO accesses. It's set up in drivers/char/mem.c, and is only created if arch_has_dev_port() returns true. Per arch/powerpc/include/asm/io.h, on PPC64 with PCI, this is only true if there's a legacy ISA bridge. Even if a system has a legacy ISA bridge installed, we have no business accessing it in skiroot. Deselect CONFIG_DEVPORT for skiroot. 2019-08-05powerpc/configs: Disable SCOM_DEBUGFS in powernv_defconfigAndrew Donnellan1-1/+1
SCOM_DEBUGFS is really not needed for anything other than low-level hardware debugging. mpe: It also introduces a large and poorly documented/understood attack surface. Although the interface is only available to root, the kernel still aspires to restrict root to accessing hardware through well defined interfaces, which this is not. opal-prd uses its own interface (/dev/prd) for SCOM access, so it doesn't need SCOM_DEBUGFS. At some point in the future we'll introduce a debug config fragment where this can go instead. Remove the CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH because: 1. It is disabled since commit 1be01d4a5714 ("driver: base: Disable CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER by default") as its dependency (UEVENT_HELPER) was made default to 'n', 2. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Certain userland specifically requests it to be disabled (systemd README: "Legacy hotplug slows down the system and confuses udev"). This config option makes only couple of lines optional. Two small helpers and an int in couple of cls structs. Remove the config option and always compile this in. This saves the user from unexpected surprises when he adds a filter with ingress device match which is silently ignored in case the config option is not set. Commit 5318321d367c ("samples: disable CONFIG_SAMPLES for UML") used a big hammer to fix the build errors under the samples/ directory. Only some samples actually include uapi headers from usr/include. Introduce CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL since 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' is clearer than 'depends on !UML'. If this option is enabled, uapi headers are installed before starting directory descending. I added 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' to per-sample CONFIG options. The only out-of-area changes are the addition of a cpuhp_state, small additions to Documentation and MAINTAINERS updates. Highlights: - Support for Kernel Userspace Access/Execution Prevention (like SMAP/SMEP/PAN/PXN) on some 64-bit and 32-bit CPUs. This prevents the kernel from accidentally accessing userspace outside copy_to/from_user(), or ever executing userspace. - KASAN support on 32-bit. - Rework of where we map the kernel, vmalloc, etc. on 64-bit hash to use the same address ranges we use with the Radix MMU. - A rewrite into C of large parts of our idle handling code for 64-bit Book3S (ie. power8 & power9). - A fast path entry for syscalls on 32-bit CPUs, for a 12-17% speedup in the null_syscall benchmark. - On 64-bit bare metal we have support for recovering from errors with the time base (our clocksource), however if that fails currently we hang in __delay() and never crash. This has the effect of enabling hardware breakpoints for GDB, the downside is a badly behaved program could crash the machine by pointing the DAWR at cache inhibited memory. Joel reported weird crashes using skiroot_defconfig, in his case we jumped into an NX page: kernel tried to execute exec-protected page (c000000002bff4f0) - exploit attempt? (uid: 0) BUG: Unable to handle kernel instruction fetch Faulting instruction address: 0xc000000002bff4f0 Looking at the disassembly, we had simply branched to that address: c000000000c001bc 49fff335 bl c000000002bff4f0 But that didn't match the original kernel image: c000000000c001bc 4bfff335 bl c000000000bff4f0 <kobject_get+0x8> When STRICT_KERNEL_RWX is enabled, and we're using the radix MMU, we call radix__change_memory_range() late in boot to change page protections. We do that both to mark rodata read only and also to mark init text no-execute. That involves walking the kernel page tables, and clearing _PAGE_WRITE or _PAGE_EXEC respectively. With radix we may use hugepages for the linear mapping, so the code in radix__change_memory_range() uses eg. pmd_huge() to test if it has found a huge mapping, and if so it stops the page table walk and changes the PMD permissions. However if the kernel is built without HUGETLBFS support, pmd_huge() is just a #define that always returns 0. That causes the code in radix__change_memory_range() to incorrectly interpret the PMD value as a pointer to a PTE page rather than as a PTE at the PMD level. We can see this using `dv` in xmon which also uses pmd_huge(): 0:mon> dv c000000000000000 pgd @ 0xc000000001740000 pgdp @ 0xc000000001740000 = 0x80000000ffffb009 pudp @ 0xc0000000ffffb000 = 0x80000000ffffa009 pmdp @ 0xc0000000ffffa000 = 0xc00000000000018f <- this is a PTE ptep @ 0xc000000000000100 = 0xa64bb17da64ab07d <- kernel text The end result is we treat the value at 0xc000000000000100 as a PTE and clear _PAGE_WRITE or _PAGE_EXEC, potentially corrupting the code at that address. In Joel's specific case we cleared the sign bit in the offset of the branch, causing a backward branch to turn into a forward branch which caused us to branch into a non-executable page. However the exact nature of the crash depends on kernel version, compiler version, and other factors. We need to fix radix__change_memory_range() to not use accessors that depend on HUGETLBFS, but we also have radix memory hotplug code that uses pmd_huge() etc that will also need fixing. So for now just disallow the broken combination of Radix with HUGETLBFS disabled. The only defconfig we have that is affected is skiroot_defconfig, so turn on HUGETLBFS there so that it still gets Radix. This reverts the remains of commit b9ef7d6b11c1 ("powerpc: Update default configurations"). That commit was proceeded by a commit which added a config option to control use of BOOTX for early debug, ie. PPC_EARLY_DEBUG_BOOTX, and then the update of the defconfigs was intended to not change behaviour by then enabling the new config option. However enabling PPC_EARLY_DEBUG had other consequences, notably causing us to register the udbg console at the end of udbg_early_init(). This means on a system which doesn't have anything that BOOTX can use (most systems), we register the udbg console very early but the bootx code just throws everything away, meaning early boot messages are never printed to the console. What we want to happen is for the udbg console to only be registered later (from setup_arch()) once we've setup udbg_putc, and then all early boot messages will be replayed. But only CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER=y is required, CONFIG_FTRACE is default y if DEBUG_KERNEL is enabled, which we have. And then CONFIG_FUNCTION_GRAPH_TRACER is default y when CONFIG_FUNCTION_TRACER is enabled. Because the allmodconfig logic just sets every symbol to M or Y, it has the effect of always generating a 64-bit config, because CONFIG_PPC64 becomes Y. So to make it easier for folks to test 32-bit code, provide a phony defconfig target that generates a 32-bit allmodconfig. The 32-bit port has several mutually exclusive CPU types, we choose the Book3S variants as that's what the help text in Kconfig says is most common.
