There is no need to disable bottom halves when holding call_lock. Also this could imply that it is legal to call smp_call_function* from bh context, which it is not. Also test if func will be executed locally before disabling and aterwards enabling interrupts again. It's not necessary to disable and enable interrupts each time __smp_call_function_map gets called. 2007-07-19s390: Put allocated ELF notes in read-only data segmentRoland McGrath1-0/+2
This changes the s390 linker script to use the asm-generic NOTES macro so that ELF note sections with SHF_ALLOC set are linked into the kernel image along with other read-only data. The PT_NOTE also points to their location. This paves the way for putting useful build-time information into ELF notes that can be found easily later in a kernel memory dump. 2007-07-19define new percpu interface for shared dataFenghua Yu1-4/+1
per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly. If the kernel OOPSed or BUGed then it probably should be considered as tainted. Thus, all subsequent OOPSes and SysRq dumps will report the tainted kernel. This saves a lot of time explaining oddities in the calltraces. 2007-07-17[S390] Fix disassembly of RX_URRD, SI_URD & PC-relative instructions.Christian Borntraeger1-3/+4
The instructions with format RX_URRD and SI_URD and instructions with a PC relative operand are not disassembled correctly. For RX_URRD and SI_URD instructions find_insn sets opfrag to code[0]. The mask byte of these two formats is 0x00. table->opfrag will never be identical to (opfrag & opmask) and no matching instruction will be found. Set the mask byte to 0xff to actually check byte 0 against the table. For PC relative instructions the (unsigned) offset value needs to be casted to an signed integer so that negative branch offsets are handled correctly. 2007-07-16generic bug: use show_regs() instead of dump_stack()Heiko Carstens1-1/+1
The current generic bug implementation has a call to dump_stack() in case a WARN_ON(whatever) gets hit. Since report_bug(), which calls dump_stack(), gets called from an exception handler we can do better: just pass the pt_regs structure to report_bug() and pass it to show_regs() in case of a warning. This will give more debug informations like register contents, etc... In addition this avoids some pointless lines that dump_stack() emits, since it includes a stack backtrace of the exception handler which is of no interest in case of a warning. 2007-07-11sysfs: kill unnecessary attribute->ownerTejun Heo1-2/+0
sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. Optimize the data collection by adding a counter for signal-related rules, and avoiding allocating an aux struct unless we have more than one target process. This finally renames the thread_info field in task structure to stack, so that the assumptions about this field are gone and archs have more freedom about placing the thread_info structure. Nonbroken archs which have a proper thread pointer can do the access to both current thread and task structure via a single pointer. It'll allow for a few more cleanups of the fork code, from which e.g. ia64 could benefit. 2007-05-09Add suspend-related notifications for CPU hotplugRafael J. Wysocki2-0/+4
Since nonboot CPUs are now disabled after tasks and devices have been frozen and the CPU hotplug infrastructure is used for this purpose, we need special CPU hotplug notifications that will help the CPU-hotplug-aware subsystems distinguish normal CPU hotplug events from CPU hotplug events related to a system-wide suspend or resume operation in progress. This patch introduces such notifications and causes them to be used during suspend and resume transitions. It also changes all of the CPU-hotplug-aware subsystems to take these notifications into consideration (for now they are handled in the same way as the corresponding "normal" ones). This patch provides a debugfs knob to turn kprobes on/off o A new file /debug/kprobes/enabled indicates if kprobes is enabled or not (default enabled) o Echoing 0 to this file will disarm all installed probes o Any new probe registration when disabled will register the probe but not arm it. A message will be printed out in such a case. o When a value 1 is echoed to the file, all probes (including ones registered in the intervening period) will be enabled o Unregistration will happen irrespective of whether probes are globally enabled or not. o Update Documentation/kprobes.txt to reflect these changes. While there also update the doc to make it current. We are also looking at providing sysrq key support to tie to the disabling feature provided by this patch.
