2006-08-14[PATCH] Change panic_on_oops message to "Fatal exception"Horms1-1/+1
Previously the message was "Fatal exception: panic_on_oops", as introduced in a recent patch whith removed a somewhat dangerous call to ssleep() in the panic_on_oops path. However, Paul Mackerras suggested that this was somewhat confusing, leadind people to believe that it was panic_on_oops that was the root cause of the fatal exception. On his suggestion, this patch changes the message to simply "Fatal exception". A suitable oops message should already have been displayed. 2006-07-31[PATCH] panic_on_oops: remove ssleep()Horms1-5/+3
This patch is part of an effort to unify the panic_on_oops behaviour across all architectures that implement it. It was pointed out to me by Andi Kleen that if an oops has occured in interrupt context, then calling sleep() in the oops path will only cause a panic, and that it would be really better for it not to be in the path at all. This patch removes the ssleep() call and reworks the console message accordinly. I have a slght concern that the resulting console message is too long, feedback welcome. For powerpc it also unifies the 32bit and 64bit behaviour. Fror x86_64, this patch only updates the console message, as ssleep() is already not present. 2006-07-10[PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl1-1/+1
screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error. 2006-06-29[PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar1-2/+2
This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. Remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn range from device drivers and get rid of VM_SHM. remap_pfn_range() already sets VM_IO. There is no need to set VM_SHM since it does nothing. VM_LOCKED is of no use since the remap_pfn_range does not place pages on the LRU. The pages are therefore never subject to swap anyways. Remove all the vm_flags settings before calling remap_pfn_range. After removing all the vm_flag settings no use of VM_SHM is left. Drop it. - When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(), the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications V3. - Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal delivery. These two use cases makes the process crash at signal delivery. While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. 2005-11-09[PATCH] sched: disable preempt in idle tasksNick Piggin1-1/+2
Run idle threads with preempt disabled. Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()). How did it ever work before? Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted. We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined. After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead. By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust. 2005-11-07[PATCH] consolidate sys_ptrace()Christoph Hellwig1-53/+2
The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures. This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as arch_ptrace. Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them. They continue to keep their implementations. For sh64 I had to add a sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call. For um I removed an ifdefed SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL block, but SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL isn't defined anywhere in the tree. 2005-10-30[PATCH] fix missing includesTim Schmielau1-0/+1
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after this disentangling (patch to follow later). However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this. In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts will pick it up again in the next round. 2005-08-29[PATCH] convert signal handling of NODEFER to act like other Unix boxes.Steven Rostedt1-6/+5
It has been reported that the way Linux handles NODEFER for signals is not consistent with the way other Unix boxes handle it. I've written a program to test the behavior of how this flag affects signals and had several reports from people who ran this on various Unix boxes, confirming that Linux seems to be unique on the way this is handled. The way NODEFER affects signals on other Unix boxes is as follows: 1) If NODEFER is set, other signals in sa_mask are still blocked. 2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal is still blocked. (Note: this is the behavior of all tested but Linux _and_ NetBSD 2.0 *). The way NODEFER affects signals on Linux: 1) If NODEFER is set, other signals are _not_ blocked regardless of sa_mask (Even NetBSD doesn't do this). 2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal being handled is not blocked. The patch converts signal handling in all current Linux architectures to the way most Unix boxes work. Unix boxes that were tested: DU4, AIX 5.2, Irix 6.5, NetBSD 2.0, SFU 3.5 on WinXP, AIX 5.3, Mac OSX, and of course Linux 2.6.13-rcX. * NetBSD was the only other Unix to behave like Linux on point #2. The main concern was brought up by point #1 which even NetBSD isn't like Linux. So with this patch, we leave NetBSD as the lonely one that behaves differently here with #2. xtensa is now in -rc1, with the obsolete syscalls still in there, so I guess this about the last chance to correct the ABI. Applying the patch obviously breaks all sorts of user space binaries and probably also requires the appropriate changes to be made to libc. On the other hand, if a decision is made to keep the broken interface, it should at least be a conscious one instead of an oversight.
