2012-10-06ACPI: Add new sysfs interface to export device descriptionLance Ortiz1-2/+52
Add support to export the device description obtained from the ACPI _STR method, if one exists for a device, to user-space via a sysfs interface. This new interface provides a standard and platform neutral way for users to obtain the description text stored in the ACPI _STR method. If no _STR method exists for the device, no sysfs 'description' file will be created. The 'description' file will be located in the /sys/devices/ directory using the device's path. /sys/device/<bus>/<bridge path>/<device path>.../firmware_node/description Example: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00.07.0/0000:0e:00.0/firmware_node/description It can also be located using the ACPI device path, for example: /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ACPI0004:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/device:15/description /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ACPI0004:00/ACPI0004:01/ACPI0007:02/description Execute the 'cat' command on the 'description' file to obtain the description string for that device. This patch also includes documentation describing how the new sysfs interface works Changes from v1-v2 based on comments by Len Brown and Fengguang Wu * Removed output "No Description" and leaving a NULL attribute if the _STR method failed to evaluate. * In acpi_device_remove_files() removed the redundent check of dev->pnp.str_obj before calling free. This check triggered a message from smatch. Signed-off-by: Lance Ortiz <lance.ortiz@hp.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2012-10-06ACPI: Harden acpi_table_parse_entries() against BIOS bugFenghua Yu1-4/+14
Parsing acpi table entries may fall into an infinite loop on a buggy BIOS which has entry length=0 in acpi table. Instead of kernel hang with few failure clue which leads to heavy lifting debug effort, this patch hardens kernel boot by booting into non NUMA mode. The debug info left in log buffer helps people identify the issue. Signed-off-by: Fenghua Yu <fenghua.yu@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2012-10-03Merge branch 'drm-next' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/linuxLinus Torvalds1-4/+4

2012-09-29efi: Fix the ACPI BGRT driver for images located in EFI boot services memoryJosh Triplett2-69/+11
The ACPI BGRT driver accesses the BIOS logo image when it initializes. However, ACPI 5.0 (which introduces the BGRT) recommends putting the logo image in EFI boot services memory, so that the OS can reclaim that memory. Production systems follow this recommendation, breaking the ACPI BGRT driver. Move the bulk of the BGRT code to run during a new EFI late initialization phase, which occurs after switching EFI to virtual mode, and after initializing ACPI, but before freeing boot services memory. Copy the BIOS logo image to kernel memory at that point, and make it accessible to the BGRT driver. Rework the existing ACPI BGRT driver to act as a simple wrapper exposing that image (and the properties from the BGRT) via sysfs. 2012-09-24PCI/ACPI: Use acpi_driver_data() rather than searching acpi_pci_rootsTaku Izumi1-5/+8
This patch changes the implementation of acpi_pci_find_root(). We can access acpi_pci_root without scanning acpi_pci_roots list. If hostbridge hotplug is supported, acpi_pci_roots list will be protected by mutex. We should not access acpi_pci_roots list if preventable to lessen deadlock risk. 2012-09-24PCI/ACPI: Use acpi_pci_root info rather than looking it up againTaku Izumi1-30/+5
This patch changes the function signature of walk_root_bridge(). We can omit _STA, _SEG, and _BBN evaluation by passing not acpi_handle but acpi_pci_root. Now that acpi_pci_slot_add() which is the only caller of walk_root_bridge() gets acpi_pci_root structure, changing signature of walk_root_bridge() is reasonable. 2012-09-24PCI/ACPI: Pass acpi_pci_root to acpi_pci_drivers' add/remove interfaceTaku Izumi2-9/+10
This patch changes .add/.remove interfaces of acpi_pci_driver. In the current implementation acpi_handle is passed as a parameter of .add/.remove interface. However, the acpi_pci_root structure contains more useful information than just the acpi_handle. This enables us to avoid some useless lookups in each acpi_pci_driver. Note: This changes interfaces used by acpi_pci_register_driver(), an exported symbol. This patch updates all the in-kernel users, but any out-of-kernel acpi_pci_register_driver() users will need updates. 2012-09-21ACPI: Allow ACPI binding with USB-3.0 hubLan Tianyu3-69/+125
A USB port's position and connectability can't be identified on some boards via USB hub registers. ACPI _UPC and _PLD can help to resolve this issue and so it is necessary to bind USB with ACPI. This patch is to allow ACPI binding with USB-3.0 hub. Current ACPI only can bind one struct-device to one ACPI device node. This can not work with USB-3.0 hub, because the USB-3.0 hub has two logical devices. Each works for USB-2.0 and USB-3.0 devices. In the Linux USB subsystem, those two logical hubs are treated as two seperate devices that have two struct devices. But in the ACPI DSDT, these two logical hubs share one ACPI device node. So there is a requirement to bind multi struct-devices to one ACPI device node. This patch is to resolve such problem. Following is the ACPI device nodes' description under xhci hcd. Device (XHC) Device (RHUB) Device (HSP1) Device (HSP2) Device (HSP3) Device (HSP4) Device (SSP1) Device (SSP2) Device (SSP3) Device (SSP4) Topology in the Linux device XHC USB-2.0 logical hub USB-3.0 logical hub HSP1 SSP1 HSP2 SSP2 HSP3 SSP3 HSP4 SSP4 This patch also modifies the output of /proc/acpi/wakeup. 2012-09-21ACPICA: Add support for complex _PLD buffers.Bob Moore3-12/+126

Adds a new include file, acbuffer.h - which will be expanded to add structs for other ACPI names that return buffers. ACPICA BZ 954. 2012-09-20ACPI video: allow events handlers to veto the keypressLuca Tettamanti1-4/+4
The standard video events may be overloaded for device specific purposes. For example AMD ACPI interface overloads ACPI_VIDEO_NOTIFY_PROBE (0x81) to signal AMD-specific events. In such cases we don't want to send the keypress (KEY_SWITCHVIDEOMODE) to the userspace because the user did not press the mode switch key (the spurious keypress confuses the DE which usually changes the display configuration and messes up a dual-screen setup). This patch gives the handlers the chance to examine the event and block the keypress if the event is device specific. v2: refactor as suggested by Zhang Rui <rui.zhang@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Luca Tettamanti <kronos.it@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Alex Deucher <alexander.deucher@amd.com>
2012-09-17cpuidle / ACPI : move cpuidle_device field out of the acpi_processor_power structureDaniel Lezcano1-8/+24
Currently we have the cpuidle_device field in the acpi_processor_power structure. This adds a dependency between processor.h and cpuidle.h Although it is not a real problem, removing this dependency has the benefit of separating a bit more the cpuidle code from the rest of the acpi code. Also, the compilation should be a bit improved because we do no longer include cpuidle.h in processor.h. The preprocessor was generating 30418 loc and with this patch it generates 30256 loc for processor_thermal.c, a file which is not concerned at all by cpuidle, like processor_perflib.c and processor_throttling.c. That may sound ridiculous, but "small streams make big rivers" :P This patch moves this field into a static global per cpu variable like what is done in the intel_idle driver. 2012-09-14ACPI / PM: Use KERN_DEBUG when no power resources are foundAaron Lu1-1/+1
commit a606dac368eed5696fb38e16b1394f1d049c09e9 adds support to link devices which have _PRx, if a device does not have _PRx, a warning message will be printed. This commit is for ZPODD on Intel ZPODD capable platforms, on other platforms, it has no problem if there is no power resource for this device, so a warning here is not appropriate, change it to debug. 2012-09-14ACPI / PM: Fix resource_lock dead lock in acpi_power_on_deviceLin Ming1-11/+23
Commit 0090def("ACPI: Add interface to register/unregister device to/from power resources") used resource_lock to protect the devices list that relies on power resource. It caused a mutex dead lock, as below acpi_power_on ---> lock resource_lock __acpi_power_on acpi_power_on_device acpi_power_get_inferred_state acpi_power_get_list_state ---> lock resource_lock This patch adds a new mutex "devices_lock" to protect the devices list and calls acpi_power_on_device in acpi_power_on, instead of __acpi_power_on, after the resource_lock is released. 2012-09-14ACPI / PM: Infer parent power state from child if unknown, v2Rafael J. Wysocki1-0/+10
It turns out that there are ACPI BIOSes defining device objects with _PSx and without either _PSC or _PRx. For devices corresponding to those ACPI objetcs __acpi_bus_get_power() returns ACPI_STATE_UNKNOWN and their initial power states are regarded as unknown as a result. If such a device is a parent of another power-manageable device, the child cannot be put into a low-power state through ACPI, because __acpi_bus_set_power() refuses to change power states of devices whose parents' power states are unknown. To work around this problem, observe that the ACPI power state of a device cannot be higher-power (lower-number) than the power state of its parent. Thus, if the device's _PSC method or the configuration of its power resources indicates that the device is in D0, the device's parent has to be in D0 as well. Consequently, if the parent's power state is unknown when we've just learned that its child's power state is D0, we can safely set the parent's power.state field to ACPI_STATE_D0.
