2022-06-09net: rename reference+tracking helpersJakub Kicinski1-2/+2
Netdev reference helpers have a dev_ prefix for historic reasons. Renaming the old helpers would be too much churn but we can rename the tracking ones which are relatively recent and should be the default for new code. Rename: dev_hold_track() -> netdev_hold() dev_put_track() -> netdev_put() dev_replace_track() -> netdev_ref_replace() Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220608043955.919359-1-kuba@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>

2021-07-27eql: use ndo_siocdevprivateArnd Bergmann1-9/+15
The private ioctls in eql pass the arguments correctly through ifr_data, but the slaving_request_t and slave_config_t structures are incompatible with compat mode and need special conversion code in the driver. Convert to siocdevprivate for now, and return an error when called in compat mode. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2017-11-21treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()Kees Cook1-3/+3
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. Casting from unsigned long: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr); and forced object casts: void my_callback(struct something *ptr) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr); become: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); Direct function assignments: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback; have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback; And finally, callbacks without a data assignment: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion: void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused) { ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script: spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \ -I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \ -I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \ -I ./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I ./include/uapi \ -I ./include/generated/uapi --include ./include/linux/kconfig.h \ --dir . \ --cocci-file ~/src/data/timer_setup.cocci @fix_address_of@ expression e; 2014-10-07net: better IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE supportEric Dumazet1-1/+1
Testing xmit_more support with netperf and connected UDP sockets, I found strange dst refcount false sharing. Current handling of IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE is not optimal. Dropping dst in validate_xmit_skb() is certainly too late in case packet was queued by cpu X but dequeued by cpu Y The logical point to take care of drop/force is in __dev_queue_xmit() before even taking qdisc lock. As Julian Anastasov pointed out, need for skb_dst() might come from some packet schedulers or classifiers. This patch adds new helper to cleanly express needs of various drivers or qdiscs/classifiers. Drivers that need skb_dst() in their ndo_start_xmit() should call following helper in their setup instead of the prior : dev->priv_flags &= ~IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE; -> netif_keep_dst(dev); Instead of using a single bit, we use two bits, one being eventually rebuilt in bonding/team drivers. The other one, is permanent and blocks IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE being rebuilt in bonding/team. Eventually, we could add something smarter later. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.hTejun Heo1-0/+1
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-05-18net: release dst entry in dev_hard_start_xmit()Eric Dumazet1-0/+1
One point of contention in high network loads is the dst_release() performed when a transmited skb is freed. This is because NIC tx completion calls dev_kree_skb() long after original call to dev_queue_xmit(skb). CPU cache is cold and the atomic op in dst_release() stalls. On SMP, this is quite visible if one CPU is 100% handling softirqs for a network device, since dst_clone() is done by other cpus, involving cache line ping pongs. It seems right place to release dst is in dev_hard_start_xmit(), for most devices but ones that are virtual, and some exceptions. David Miller suggested to define a new device flag, set in alloc_netdev_mq() (so that most devices set it at init time), and carefuly unset in devices which dont want a NULL skb->dst in their ndo_start_xmit(). List of devices that must clear this flag is : - loopback device, because it calls netif_rx() and quoting Patrick : "ip_route_input() doesn't accept loopback addresses, so loopback packets already need to have a dst_entry attached." - appletalk/ipddp.c : needs skb->dst in its xmit function - And all devices that call again dev_queue_xmit() from their xmit function (as some classifiers need skb->dst) : bonding, vlan, macvlan, eql, ifb, hdlc_fr Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S. The functions: dev_getbyhwaddr dev_getfirsthwbytype dev_get_by_flags dev_get_by_name __dev_get_by_name dev_get_by_index __dev_get_by_index dev_ioctl dev_ethtool dev_load wireless_process_ioctl were modified to take a network namespace argument, and deal with it. vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their hooks will receive a network namespace argument. So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces. For now the ifindex generator is left global. Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else we will have corner case problems with migration when we get that far. At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when you change namespaces, and the like. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
