2018-09-10USB: OHCI: Remove USB bus reset delay from OHCI handover codeAlan Stern1-9/+3
Paul pointed out that the 50-ms sleep during OHCI initialization takes up a large fraction of a system's boot time. Things get worse when there are two OHCI controllers present, each requiring 50 ms. However, there really is no need to send a 50-ms reset signal out all the root-hub ports during initialization. The ports themselves will be disabled, and the only way to enable a port is to reset it. Therefore all attached USB devices will receive a proper reset in any case. The controller reset does not need to be long enough to reset those other devices, so the 50-ms delay isn't necessary. Without the delay, there is no remaining incentive for skipping the reset when the controller is already in the RESET state. This patch removes the test, issuing the command unconditionally, and removes the following delay. 2018-02-15xhci: workaround for AMD Promontory disabled ports wakeupJoe Lee1-0/+109
For AMD Promontory xHCI host, although you can disable USB ports in BIOS settings, those ports will be enabled anyway after you remove a device on that port and re-plug it in again. It's a known limitation of the chip. As a workaround we can clear the PORT_WAKE_BITS. 2017-11-04USB: add SPDX identifiers to all remaining files in drivers/usb/Greg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to audit the kernel tree for correct licenses. Update the drivers/usb/ and include/linux/usb* files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. 2017-09-18xhci: Fix sleeping with spin_lock_irq() held in ASmedia 1042A workaroundMathias Nyman1-1/+1
The flow control workaround for ASM1042A xHC hosts sleeps between register polling. The workaround gets called in several places, among them with spin_lock_irq() held when xHC host is resumed or hoplug removed. This was noticed as kernel panics at resume on a Dell XPS15 9550 with TB16 thunderbolt dock. Avoid sleeping with spin_lock_irq() held, use udelay() instead The original workaround was added to 4.9 and 4.12 stable releases, this patch needs to be applied to those as well. 2017-09-18usb: pci-quirks.c: Corrected timeout values used in handshakeJim Dickerson1-4/+4
Servers were emitting failed handoff messages but were not waiting the full 1 second as designated in section 4.22.1 of the eXtensible Host Controller Interface specifications. The handshake was using wrong units so calls were made with milliseconds not microseconds. Comments referenced 5 seconds not 1 second as in specs. The wrong units were also corrected in a second handshake call. Certain HP keyboards would keep inputting a character automatically which is the wake-up key after S3 resume On some AMD platforms USB host fails to respond (by holding resume-K) to USB device (an HP keyboard) resume request within 1ms (TURSM) and ensures that resume is signaled for at least 20 ms (TDRSMDN), which is defined in USB 2.0 spec. The result is that the keyboard is out of function. In SNPS USB design, the host responds to the resume request only after system gets back to S0 and the host gets to functional after the internal HW restore operation that is more than 1 second after the initial resume request from the USB device. As a workaround for specific keyboard ID(HP Keyboards), applying port reset after resume when the keyboard is plugged in. 2017-08-02xhci: Reset Renesas uPD72020x USB controller for 32-bit DMA issueMarc Zyngier1-0/+20
The Renesas uPD72020x XHCI controller seems to suffer from a really annoying bug, where it may retain some of its DMA programming across a XHCI reset, and despite the driver correctly programming new DMA addresses. This is visible if the device has been using 64-bit DMA addresses, and is then switched to using 32-bit DMA addresses. The top 32 bits of the address (now zero) are ignored are replaced by the 32 bits from the *previous* programming. Sticking with 64-bit DMA always works, but doesn't seem very appropriate. A PCI reset of the device restores the normal functionality, which is done at probe time. Unfortunately, this has to be done before any quirk has been discovered, hence the intrusive nature of the fix. 2015-12-01xhci: rework xhci extended capability list parsing functionsMathias Nyman1-16/+9
Replace the existing two extended capability parsing helper functions with one called xhci_find_next_ext_cap(). The extended capabilities are read both in pci-quirks before xhci driver is loaded, and inside the xhci driver when adding ports. The existing helpers did not suit well for these cases and a lot of custom parsing code was needed. The new helper function simplifies these two cases a lot. The motivation for this rework was that code to support xhci debug capability needed to parse extended capabilities, and it included yet another capability parsing helper specific for its needs. 2015-01-09OHCI: add a quirk for ULi M5237 blocking on resetArseny Solokha1-3/+15
Commit 8dccddbc2368 ("OHCI: final fix for NVIDIA problems (I hope)") introduced into 3.1.9 broke boot on e.g. Freescale P2020DS development board. The code path that was previously specific to NVIDIA controllers had then become taken for all chips. However, the M5237 installed on the board wedges solid when accessing its base+OHCI_FMINTERVAL register, making it impossible to boot any kernel newer than 3.1.8 on this particular and apparently other similar machines. Don't readl() and writel() base+OHCI_FMINTERVAL on PCI ID 10b9:5237. The patch is suitable for the -next tree as well as all maintained kernels up to 3.2 inclusive. 2014-06-17USB: EHCI: avoid BIOS handover on the HASEE E200Alan Stern1-3/+16
Leandro Liptak reports that his HASEE E200 computer hangs when we ask the BIOS to hand over control of the EHCI host controller. This definitely sounds like a bug in the BIOS, but at the moment there is no way to fix it. This patch works around the problem by avoiding the handoff whenever the motherboard and BIOS version match those of Leandro's computer. 2013-10-09xhci: fix write to USB3_PSSEN and XUSB2PRM pci config registersXenia Ragiadakou1-2/+2
The function pci_write_config_dword() sets the appropriate byteordering internally so the value argument should not be converted to little-endian. This bug was found by sparse. This patch is not suitable for stable. Since cpu_to_lei32 is a no-op on little endian systems, this bug would only affect big endian Intel systems with the EHCI to xHCI port switchover, which are non-existent, AFAIK. 2013-09-25usb: core: implement AMD remote wakeup quirkHuang Rui1-0/+12
The following patch is required to resolve remote wake issues with certain devices. Issue description: If the remote wake is issued from the device in a specific timing condition while the system is entering sleep state then it may cause system to auto wake on subsequent sleep cycle. Root cause: Host controller rebroadcasts the Resume signal > 100 µseconds after receiving the original resume event from the device. For proper function, some devices may require the rebroadcast of resume event within the USB spec of 100µS. Workaroud: 1. Filter the AMD platforms with Yangtze chipset, then judge of all the usb devices are mouse or not. And get out the port id which attached a mouse with Pixart controller. 2. Then reset the port which attached issue device during system resume from S3. [Q] Why the special devices are only mice? Would high speed devices such as 3G modem or USB Bluetooth adapter trigger this issue? - Current this sensitivity is only confined to devices that use Pixart controllers. This controller is designed for use with LS mouse devices only. We have not observed any other devices failing. There may be a small risk for other devices also but this patch (reset device in resume phase) will cover the cases if required. [Q] Shouldn’t the resume signal be sent within 100 us for every device? - The Host controller may not send the resume signal within 100us, this our host controller specification change. This is why we require the patch to prevent side effects on certain known devices. [Q] Why would clicking mouse INTENSELY to wake the system up trigger this issue? - This behavior is specific to the devices that use Pixart controller. It is timing dependent on when the resume event is triggered during the sleep state. [Q] Is it a host controller issue or mouse? - It is the host controller behavior during resume that triggers the device incorrect behavior on the next resume. This patch sets USB_QUIRK_RESET_RESUME flag for these Pixart-based mice when they attached to platforms with AMD Yangtze chipset. 2013-07-23Intel xhci: refactor EHCI/xHCI port switchingMathias Nyman1-30/+18
Make the Linux xHCI driver automatically try to switchover the EHCI ports to xHCI when an Intel xHCI host is detected, and it also finds an Intel EHCI host. This means we will no longer have to add Intel xHCI hosts to a quirks list when the PCI device IDs change. Simply continuing to add new Intel xHCI PCI device IDs to the quirks list is not sustainable. During suspend ports may be swicthed back to EHCI by BIOS and not properly restored to xHCI at resume. Previously both EHCI and xHCI resume functions switched ports back to XHCI, but it's enough to do it in xHCI only because the hub driver doesn't start running again until after both hosts are resumed. When the xHCI driver is not available, actively switch the ports to EHCI mode since some BIOSes leave them in xHCI mode where they would otherwise appear dead. This was discovered on a Dell Optiplex 7010, but it's possible other systems could be affected. 2012-09-05xhci: Make handover code more robustMatthew Garrett1-2/+10
My test platform (Intel DX79SI) boots reliably under BIOS, but frequently crashes when booting via UEFI. I finally tracked this down to the xhci handoff code. It seems that reads from the device occasionally just return 0xff, resulting in xhci_find_next_cap_offset generating a value that's larger than the resource region. We then oops when attempting to read the value. Sanity checking that value lets us avoid the crash. I've no idea what's causing the underlying problem, and xhci still doesn't actually *work* even with this, but the machine at least boots which will probably make further debugging easier. 2012-08-09xhci: Switch PPT ports to EHCI on shutdown.Sarah Sharp1-0/+7
The Intel desktop boards DH77EB and DH77DF have a hardware issue that can be worked around by BIOS. If the USB ports are switched to xHCI on shutdown, the xHCI host will send a spurious interrupt, which will wake the system. Some BIOS will work around this, but not all. The bug can be avoided if the USB ports are switched back to EHCI on shutdown. The Intel Windows driver switches the ports back to EHCI, so change the Linux xHCI driver to do the same. Unfortunately, we can't tell the two effected boards apart from other working motherboards, because the vendors will change the DMI strings for the DH77EB and DH77DF boards to their own custom names. One example is Compulab's mini-desktop, the Intense-PC. Instead, key off the Panther Point xHCI host PCI vendor and device ID, and switch the ports over for all PPT xHCI hosts. The only impact this will have on non-effected boards is to add a couple hundred milliseconds delay on boot when the BIOS has to switch the ports over from EHCI to xHCI. 2012-02-21USB: Fix handoff when BIOS disables host PCI device.Sarah Sharp1-0/+11
On some systems with an Intel Panther Point xHCI host controller, the BIOS disables the xHCI PCI device during boot, and switches the xHCI ports over to EHCI. This allows the BIOS to access USB devices without having xHCI support. The downside is that the xHCI BIOS handoff mechanism will fail because memory mapped I/O is not enabled for the disabled PCI device. Jesse Barnes says this is expected behavior. The PCI core will enable BARs before quirks run, but it will leave it in an undefined state, and it may not have memory mapped I/O enabled. Make the generic USB quirk handler call pci_enable_device() to re-enable MMIO, and call pci_disable_device() once the host-specific BIOS handoff is finished. This will balance the ref counts in the PCI core. When the PCI probe function is called, usb_hcd_pci_probe() will call pci_enable_device() again. This should be back ported to kernels as old as 2.6.31. That was the first kernel with xHCI support, and no one has complained about BIOS handoffs failing due to memory mapped I/O being disabled on other hosts (EHCI, UHCI, or OHCI). The Netlogic XLP SoC's on-chip USB controller appears as a PCI USB device, but does not need the EHCI/OHCI handoff done in usb/host/pci-quirks.c. The pci-quirks.c is enabled for all vendors and devices, and is enabled if USB and PCI are configured. If we do not skip the qurik handling on XLP, the readb() call in ehci_bios_handoff() will cause a crash since byte access is not supported for EHCI registers in XLP. Problems with NVIDIA's OHCI host controllers persist. After looking carefully through the spec, I finally realized that when a controller is reset it then automatically goes into a SUSPEND state in which it is completely quiescent (no DMA and no IRQs) and from which it will not awaken until the system puts it into the OPERATIONAL state. Therefore there's no need to worry about controllers being in the RESET state for extended periods, or remaining in the OPERATIONAL state during system shutdown. The proper action for device initialization is to put the controller into the RESET state (if it's not there already) and then to issue a software reset. Similarly, the proper action for device shutdown is simply to do a software reset. This patch (as1499) implements such an approach. It simplifies initialization and shutdown, and allows the NVIDIA shutdown-quirk code to be removed. This patch (as1491) works around a bug in GCC-3.4.6, which is still supposed to be supported. The number of microseconds in the udelay() call in quirk_usb_disable_ehci() is fixed at 100, but the compiler doesn't understand this and generates a link-time error. So we replace the otherwise unused variable "delta" with a simple constant 100. This same pattern is already used in other delay loops in that source file.
