SAE J1939 is the vehicle bus recommended practice used for communication and diagnostics among vehicle components. Originating in the car and heavy-duty truck industry in the United States, it is now widely used in other parts of the world. J1939, ISO 11783 and NMEA 2000 all share the same high level protocol. SAE J1939 can be considered the replacement for the older SAE J1708 and SAE J1587 specifications. This patch removes the old method of allocating the per device protocol specific memory via a netdevice_notifier. This had the drawback, that the allocation can fail, leading to a lot of null pointer checks in the code. This also makes the live cycle management of this memory quite complicated. This patch switches from the allocating the struct can_dev_rcv_lists in a NETDEV_REGISTER call to using the dev->ml_priv, which is allocated by the driver since the previous patch. 2019-09-04can: introduce CAN midlayer private and allocate it automaticallyMarc Kleine-Budde1-0/+66
This patch introduces the CAN midlayer private structure ("struct can_ml_priv") which should be used to hold protocol specific per device data structures. For now it's only member is "struct can_dev_rcv_lists". The CAN midlayer private is allocated via alloc_netdev()'s private and assigned to "struct net_device::ml_priv" during device creation. This is done transparently for CAN drivers using alloc_candev(). The slcan, vcan and vxcan drivers which are not using alloc_candev() have been adopted manually. 2018-07-27can: dev: enable multi-queue for SocketCAN devicesZhu Yi1-1/+6
The existing SocketCAN implementation provides alloc_candev() to allocate a CAN device using a single Tx and Rx queue. This can lead to priority inversion in case the single Tx queue is already full with low priority messages and a high priority message needs to be sent while the bus is fully loaded with medium priority messages. This problem can be solved by using the existing multi-queue support of the network subsytem. The commit makes it possible to use multi-queue in the CAN subsystem in the same way it is used in the Ethernet subsystem by adding an alloc_candev_mqs() call and accompanying macros. With this support a CAN device can use multi-queue qdisc (e.g. mqprio) to avoid the aforementioned priority inversion. The exisiting functionality of alloc_candev() is the same as before. CAN devices need to have prioritized multiple hardware queues or are able to abort waiting for arbitration to make sensible use of multi-queues. 2018-01-16can: dev: Add support for limiting configured bitrateFranklin S Cooper Jr1-0/+7
Various CAN or CAN-FD IP may be able to run at a faster rate than what the transceiver the CAN node is connected to. This can lead to unexpected errors. However, CAN transceivers typically have fixed limitations and provide no means to discover these limitations at runtime. Therefore, add support for a can-transceiver node that can be reused by other CAN peripheral drivers to determine for both CAN and CAN-FD what the max bitrate that can be used. If the user tries to configure CAN to pass these maximum bitrates it will throw an error. Also add support for reading bitrate_max via the netlink interface. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman7-0/+7
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-04-25can: peak: add support for PEAK PCAN-PCIe FD CAN-FD boardsStephane Grosjean1-0/+65
This patch adds the support of the PCAN-PCI Express FD boards made by PEAK-System, for computers using the PCI Express slot. The PCAN-PCI Express FD has one or two CAN FD channels, depending on the model. A galvanic isolation of the CAN ports protects the electronics of the card and the respective computer against disturbances of up to 500 Volts. The PCAN-PCI Express FD can be operated with ambient temperatures in a range of -40 to +85 °C. Such boards run an extented version of the CAN-FD IP running into USB CAN-FD interfaces from PEAK-System, so this patch adds several new commands and their corresponding data types to the PEAK CAN-FD common definitions header file too. In order to prepare the adding of some new non-USB CAN-FD interfaces, this patch moves - and rename - the IP definitions file from its private (usb) sub-directory into a - newly created - CAN specific one. This patch adds initial support for network namespaces. The changes only enable support in the CAN raw, proc and af_can code. GW and BCM still have their checks that ensure that they are used only from the main namespace. The patch boils down to moving the global structures, i.e. the global filter list and their /proc stats, into a per-namespace structure and passing around the corresponding "struct net" in a lot of different places. Some CAN controllers don't implement a FIFO in hardware, but fill their mailboxes in a particular order (from lowest to highest or highest to lowest). This makes problems to read the frames in the correct order from the hardware, as new frames might be filled into just read (low) mailboxes. This gets worse, when following new frames are received into not read (higher) mailboxes. On the bright side some these CAN controllers put a timestamp on each received CAN frame. Zhang Yanmin reported crashes [1] and provided a patch adding a synchronize_rcu() call in can_rx_unregister() The main problem seems that the sockets themselves are not RCU protected. If CAN uses RCU for delivery, then sockets should be freed only after one RCU grace period. Recent kernels could use sock_set_flag(sk, SOCK_RCU_FREE), but let's ease stable backports with the following fix instead. A timer was used to restart after the bus-off state, leading to a relatively large can_restart() executed in an interrupt context, which in turn sets up pinctrl. When this happens during system boot, there is a high probability of grabbing the pinctrl_list_mutex, which is locked already by the probe() of other device, making the kernel suspect a deadlock condition [1]. To resolve this issue, the restart_timer is replaced by a delayed work. 2016-05-09can: fix handling of unmodifiable configuration optionsOliver Hartkopp1-2/+20
As described in 'can: m_can: tag current CAN FD controllers as non-ISO' (6cfda7fbebe) it is possible to define fixed configuration options by setting the according bit in 'ctrlmode' and clear it in 'ctrlmode_supported'. This leads to the incovenience that the fixed configuration bits can not be passed by netlink even when they have the correct values (e.g. non-ISO, FD). This patch fixes that issue and not only allows fixed set bit values to be set again but now requires(!) to provide these fixed values at configuration time. A valid CAN FD configuration consists of a nominal/arbitration bittiming, a data bittiming and a control mode with CAN_CTRLMODE_FD set - which is now enforced by a new can_validate() function. This fix additionally removed the inconsistency that was prohibiting the support of 'CANFD-only' controller drivers, like the RCar CAN FD. For this reason a new helper can_set_static_ctrlmode() has been introduced to provide a proper interface to handle static enabled CAN controller options. 2015-07-12can: replace timestamp as unique skb attributeOliver Hartkopp1-0/+2
Commit 514ac99c64b "can: fix multiple delivery of a single CAN frame for overlapping CAN filters" requires the skb->tstamp to be set to check for identical CAN skbs. Without timestamping to be required by user space applications this timestamp was not generated which lead to commit 36c01245eb8 "can: fix loss of CAN frames in raw_rcv" - which forces the timestamp to be set in all CAN related skbuffs by introducing several __net_timestamp() calls. This forces e.g. out of tree drivers which are not using alloc_can{,fd}_skb() to add __net_timestamp() after skbuff creation to prevent the frame loss fixed in mainline Linux. This patch removes the timestamp dependency and uses an atomic counter to create an unique identifier together with the skbuff pointer. Btw: the new skbcnt element introduced in struct can_skb_priv has to be initialized with zero in out-of-tree drivers which are not using alloc_can{,fd}_skb() too. The handling of can error states is different between platforms. This is an attempt to correct that problem. I've moved this handling into a generic function for changing the error state. This ensures that error state changes are handled the same way everywhere (where this function is used). This new mechanism also adds reverse state transitioning in error frames, i.e. the user will be notified through the socket interface when the state goes down. This patch adds some helper functions to make sure that a destructor is properly defined when a sock reference is assigned to a CAN related skb. To create an unshared skb owned by the original sock a common helper function has been introduced to replace open coded functions to create CAN echo skbs. The struct can_skb_priv is used to transport additional information along with the stored struct can(fd)_frame that can not be contained in existing struct sk_buff elements. can_skb_priv is located in the skb headroom, which does not touch the existing CAN sk_buff usage with skb->data and skb->len, so that even out-of-tree CAN drivers can be used without changes. Btw. out-of-tree CAN drivers without can_skb_priv in the sk_buff headroom would not support features based on can_skb_priv. The can_skb_priv->ifindex contains the first interface where the CAN frame appeared on the local host. Unfortunately skb->skb_iif can not be used as this value is overwritten in every netif_receive_skb() call.
