2020-06-15sched/deadline: Implement fallback mechanism for !fit caseLuca Abeni1-4/+16
When a task has a runtime that cannot be served within the scheduling deadline by any of the idle CPU (later_mask) the task is doomed to miss its deadline. This can happen since the SCHED_DEADLINE admission control guarantees only bounded tardiness and not the hard respect of all deadlines. In this case try to select the idle CPU with the largest CPU capacity to minimize tardiness. Favor task_cpu(p) if it has max capacity of !fitting CPUs so that find_later_rq() can potentially still return it (most likely cache-hot) early. 2020-06-15sched/deadline: Make DL capacity-awareLuca Abeni1-1/+13
The current SCHED_DEADLINE (DL) scheduler uses a global EDF scheduling algorithm w/o considering CPU capacity or task utilization. This works well on homogeneous systems where DL tasks are guaranteed to have a bounded tardiness but presents issues on heterogeneous systems. A DL task can migrate to a CPU which does not have enough CPU capacity to correctly serve the task (e.g. a task w/ 70ms runtime and 100ms period on a CPU w/ 512 capacity). Add the DL fitness function dl_task_fits_capacity() for DL admission control on heterogeneous systems. A task fits onto a CPU if: CPU original capacity / 1024 >= task runtime / task deadline Use this function on heterogeneous systems to try to find a CPU which meets this criterion during task wakeup, push and offline migration. On homogeneous systems the original behavior of the DL admission control should be retained. 2019-06-03sched/core: Provide a pointer to the valid CPU maskSebastian Andrzej Siewior1-2/+2
In commit: 4b53a3412d66 ("sched/core: Remove the tsk_nr_cpus_allowed() wrapper") the tsk_nr_cpus_allowed() wrapper was removed. There was not much difference in !RT but in RT we used this to implement migrate_disable(). Within a migrate_disable() section the CPU mask is restricted to single CPU while the "normal" CPU mask remains untouched. As an alternative implementation Ingo suggested to use: struct task_struct { const cpumask_t *cpus_ptr; cpumask_t cpus_mask; }; with t->cpus_ptr = &t->cpus_mask; In -RT we then can switch the cpus_ptr to: t->cpus_ptr = &cpumask_of(task_cpu(p)); in a migration disabled region. The rules are simple: - Code that 'uses' ->cpus_allowed would use the pointer. - Code that 'modifies' ->cpus_allowed would use the direct mask. 2018-03-04sched/headers: Simplify and clean up header usage in the schedulerIngo Molnar1-4/+1
Do the following cleanups and simplifications: - sched/sched.h already includes <asm/paravirt.h>, so no need to include it in sched/core.c again. - order the <linux/sched/*.h> headers alphabetically - add all <linux/sched/*.h> headers to kernel/sched/sched.h - remove all unnecessary includes from the .c files that are already included in kernel/sched/sched.h. Finally, make all scheduler .c files use a single common header: #include "sched.h" ... which now contains a union of the relied upon headers. This makes the various .c files easier to read and easier to handle. 2016-09-05sched/deadline: Make CPU heap faster avoiding real swaps on heapifyTommaso Cucinotta1-21/+45
This change goes from heapify() ops done by swapping with parent/child so that the item to fix moves along, to heapify() ops done by just pulling the parent/child chain by 1 pos, then storing the item to fix just at the end. On a non-trivial heapify(), this performs roughly half stores wrt swaps. This has been measured to achieve up to 10% of speed-up for cpudl_set() calls, with a randomly generated workload of 1K,10K,100K random heap insertions and deletions (75% cpudl_set() calls with is_valid=1 and 25% with is_valid=0), and randomly generated cpu IDs, with up to 256 CPUs, as measured on an Intel Core2 Duo. 2016-08-10sched/deadline: Fix wrap-around in DL heapTommaso Cucinotta1-1/+1
Current code in cpudeadline.c has a bug in re-heapifying when adding a new element at the end of the heap, because a deadline value of 0 is temporarily set in the new elem, then cpudl_change_key() is called with the actual elem deadline as param. However, the function compares the new deadline to set with the one previously in the elem, which is 0. So, if current absolute deadlines grew so much to have negative values as s64, the comparison in cpudl_change_key() makes the wrong decision. Instead, as from dl_time_before(), the kernel should handle correctly abs deadlines wrap-arounds. This patch fixes the problem with a minimally invasive change that forces cpudl_change_key() to heapify up in this case. 2015-02-04sched/deadline: Remove cpu_active_mask from cpudl_find()Xunlei Pang1-2/+1
cpu_active_mask is rarely changed (only on hotplug), so remove this operation to gain a little performance. If there is a change in cpu_active_mask, rq_online_dl() and rq_offline_dl() should take care of it normally, so cpudl::free_cpus carries enough information for us. For the rare case when a task is put onto a dying cpu (which rq_offline_dl() can't handle in a timely fashion), it will be handled through _cpu_down()->...->multi_cpu_stop()->migration_call() ->migrate_tasks(), preventing the task from hanging on the dead cpu. 2015-01-30sched/deadline: Modify cpudl::free_cpus to reflect rd->onlineXunlei Pang1-4/+24

2014-09-24sched/deadline: Fix inter- exclusive cpusets migrationsJuri Lelli1-3/+1
Users can perform clustered scheduling using the cpuset facility. After an exclusive cpuset is created, task migrations happen only between CPUs belonging to the same cpuset. Inter- cpuset migrations can only happen when the user requires so, moving a task between different cpusets. This behaviour is broken in SCHED_DEADLINE, as currently spurious inter- cpuset migration may happen without user intervention. 2014-01-13sched/deadline: speed up SCHED_DEADLINE pushes with a push-heapJuri Lelli1-0/+216
Data from tests confirmed that the original active load balancing logic didn't scale neither in the number of CPU nor in the number of tasks (as sched_rt does). Here we provide a global data structure to keep track of deadlines of the running tasks in the system. The structure is composed by a bitmask showing the free CPUs and a max-heap, needed when the system is heavily loaded. The implementation and concurrent access scheme are kept simple by design. However, our measurements show that we can compete with sched_rt on large multi-CPUs machines [1]. Only the push path is addressed, the extension to use this structure also for pull decisions is straightforward. However, we are currently evaluating different (in order to decrease/avoid contention) data structures to solve possibly both problems. We are also going to re-run tests considering recent changes inside cpupri [2].
