2022-05-25selftests: vm: add the "settings" file with timeout variablePatrick Wang1-0/+1
The default "timeout" for one kselftest is 45 seconds, while some cases in run_vmtests.sh require more time. This will cause testing timeout like: not ok 4 selftests: vm: run_vmtests.sh # TIMEOUT 45 seconds Therefore, add the "settings" file with timeout variable so users can set the "timeout" value. 2022-05-25selftests: vm: add "test_hmm.sh" to TEST_FILESPatrick Wang1-0/+1
The "test_hmm.sh" file used by run_vmtests.sh dose not be installed into INSTALL_PATH. Thus run_vmtests.sh can not call it in INSTALL_PATH: --------------------------- running ./test_hmm.sh smoke --------------------------- ./run_vmtests.sh: line 74: ./test_hmm.sh: No such file or directory [FAIL] ----------------------- Add "test_hmm.sh" to TEST_FILES so that it will be installed. 2022-05-25selftests: vm: check numa_available() before operating "merge_across_nodes" in ksm_testsPatrick Wang1-3/+6
Patch series "selftests: vm: a few fixup patches". This series contains three fixup patches for vm selftests. They are independent. Please see the patches. This patch (of 3): Currently, ksm_tests operates "merge_across_nodes" with NUMA either enabled or disabled. In a system with NUMA disabled, these operations will fail and output a misleading report given "merge_across_nodes" does not exist in sysfs: ---------------------------- running ./ksm_tests -M -p 10 ---------------------------- f /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/merge_across_nodes fopen: No such file or directory Cannot save default tunables [FAIL] ---------------------- So check numa_available() before those operations to skip them if NUMA is disabled. 2022-05-25selftests: vm: add process_mrelease testsSuren Baghdasaryan4-0/+204
Introduce process_mrelease syscall sanity tests which include tests which expect to fail: - process_mrelease with invalid pidfd and flags inputs - process_mrelease on a live process with no pending signals and valid process_mrelease usage which is expected to succeed. Because process_mrelease has to be used against a process with a pending SIGKILL, it's possible that the process exits before process_mrelease gets called. In such cases we retry the test with a victim that allocates twice more memory up to 1GB. This would require the victim process to spend more time during exit and process_mrelease has a better chance of catching the process before it exits and succeeding. On success the test reports the amount of memory the child had to allocate for reaping to succeed. Sample output: $ mrelease_test Success reaping a child with 1MB of memory allocations On failure the test reports the failure. Sample outputs: $ mrelease_test All process_mrelease attempts failed! $ mrelease_test process_mrelease: Invalid argument Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220518204316.13131-1-surenb@google.com Signed-off-by: Suren Baghdasaryan <surenb@google.com> Reviewed-by: Shuah Khan <skhan@linuxfoundation.org> Acked-by: Christian Brauner (Microsoft) <brauner@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Muhammad Usama Anjum <usama.anjum@collabora.com> Cc: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Cc: David Rientjes <rientjes@google.com> Cc: Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) <willy@infradead.org> Cc: Johannes Weiner <hannes@cmpxchg.org> Cc: Roman Gushchin <guro@fb.com> Cc: Minchan Kim <minchan@kernel.org> Cc: "Kirill A . 2022-05-09selftests: clarify common error when running gup_testJoel Savitz1-0/+2
The gup_test binary will fail showing only the output of perror("open") in the case that /sys/kernel/debug/gup_test is not found. This will almost always be due to CONFIG_GUP_TEST not being set, which enables compilation of a kernel that provides this file. Add a short error message to clarify this failure and point the user to the solution. 2022-05-09selftests: vm: Makefile: rename TARGETS to VMTARGETSJoel Savitz1-5/+5
The tools/testing/selftests/vm/Makefile uses the variable TARGETS internally to generate a list of platform-specific binary build targets suffixed with _{32,64}. When building the selftests using its own Makefile directly, such as via the following command run in a kernel tree: One receives an error such as the following: make: Entering directory '/root/linux/tools/testing/selftests' make --no-builtin-rules ARCH=x86 -C ../../.. headers_install make[1]: Entering directory '/root/linux' INSTALL ./usr/include make[1]: Leaving directory '/root/linux' make[1]: Entering directory '/root/linux/tools/testing/selftests/vm' make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'vm.c', needed by '/root/linux/tools/testing/selftests/vm/vm_64'. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory '/root/linux/tools/testing/selftests/vm' make: *** [Makefile:175: all] Error 2 make: Leaving directory '/root/linux/tools/testing/selftests' The TARGETS variable passed to tools/testing/selftests/Makefile collides with the TARGETS used in tools/testing/selftests/vm/Makefile, so rename the latter to VMTARGETS, eliminating the collision with no functional change. 2022-04-28selftests: vm: fix shellcheck warnings in run_vmtests.shAxel Rasmussen1-28/+27
These might not be issues yet, but they make the script more fragile. Also by fixing them we give a better example to future readers, who might copy/paste or otherwise re-use snippets from our script. - Use "read -r", since we don't ever want read to be interpreting '\' characters as escape sequences... - Quote variables, to deal with spaces properly. - Use $() instead of the older and harder-to-nest ``. - Get rid of superfluous "$" prefixes inside arithmetic $(()). 2022-04-28selftests: vm: refactor run_vmtests.sh to reduce boilerplateAxel Rasmussen1-415/+64
Previously, each test printed out its own header, dealt with its own return code, etc. By just putting this standard stuff in a function, we can delete > 300 lines from the script. This also makes adding future tests easier. And, it gets rid of various inconsistencies that already exist: - Some tests correctly deal with ksft_skip, but others don't. - Some tests just print the executable name, others print arguments, and yet others print some comment in the header. - Most tests print out a header with two separator lines, but not the HMM smoke test or the memfd_secret test, which only print one. - We had a redundant "exit" at the end, with all the boilerplate it's an easy oversight. 2022-04-25selftests/vm/pkeys: Use provided __cpuid_count() macroReinette Chatre1-19/+2
kselftest.h makes the __cpuid_count() macro available to conveniently call the CPUID instruction. Remove the local CPUID wrapper and use __cpuid_count() from already included kselftest.h instead. __cpuid_count() from kselftest.h is used instead of the macro provided by the compiler since gcc v4.4 (via cpuid.h) because the selftest needs to be compiled with gcc v3.2, the minimal required version for stable kernels. 2022-04-21selftest/vm: verify remap destination address in mremap_testSidhartha Kumar1-3/+39
Because mremap does not have a MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE flag, it can destroy existing mappings. This causes a segfault when regions such as text are remapped and the permissions are changed. Verify the requested mremap destination address does not overlap any existing mappings by using mmap's MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE flag. Keep incrementing the destination address until a valid mapping is found or fail the current test once the max address is reached. 2022-04-21selftest/vm: verify mmap addr in mremap_testSidhartha Kumar1-1/+40
Avoid calling mmap with requested addresses that are less than the system's mmap_min_addr. When run as root, mmap returns EACCES when trying to map addresses < mmap_min_addr. This is not one of the error codes for the condition to retry the mmap in the test. Rather than arbitrarily retrying on EACCES, don't attempt an mmap until addr > vm.mmap_min_addr. Add a munmap call after an alignment check as the mappings are retained after the retry and can reach the vm.max_map_count sysctl. 2022-03-22selftests: vm: add a hugetlb test caseMuchun Song4-0/+157
Since the head vmemmap page frame associated with each HugeTLB page is reused, we should hide the PG_head flag of tail struct page from the user. Add a tese case to check whether it is work properly. The test steps are as follows. 1) alloc 2MB hugeTLB 2) get each page frame 3) apply those APIs in each page frame 4) Those APIs work completely the same as before. Reading the flags of a page by /proc/kpageflags is done in stable_page_flags(), which has invoked PageHead(), PageTail(), PageCompound() and compound_head(). If those APIs work properly, the head page must have 15 and 17 bits set. And tail pages must have 16 and 17 bits set but 15 bit unset. Those flags are checked in check_page_flags(). 2022-03-22selftests, x86: fix how check_cc.sh is being invokedGuillaume Tucker1-3/+3
The $(CC) variable used in Makefiles could contain several arguments such as "ccache gcc". These need to be passed as a single string to check_cc.sh, otherwise only the first argument will be used as the compiler command. Without quotes, the $(CC) variable is passed as distinct arguments which causes the script to fail to build trivial programs. Fix this by adding quotes around $(CC) when calling check_cc.sh to pass the whole string as a single argument to the script even if it has several words such as "ccache gcc". 2022-03-05selftests/vm: cleanup hugetlb file after mremap testMike Kravetz2-8/+21
The hugepage-mremap test will create a file in a hugetlb filesystem. In a default 'run_vmtests' run, the file will contain all the hugetlb pages. After the test, the file remains and there are no free hugetlb pages for subsequent tests. This causes those hugetlb tests to fail. Change hugepage-mremap to take the name of the hugetlb file as an argument. Unlink the file within the test, and just to be sure remove the file in the run_vmtests script. 2022-01-15mm/hmm.c: allow VM_MIXEDMAP to work with hmm_range_faultAlistair Popple1-0/+42
hmm_range_fault() can be used instead of get_user_pages() for devices which allow faulting however unlike get_user_pages() it will return an error when used on a VM_MIXEDMAP range. To make hmm_range_fault() more closely match get_user_pages() remove this restriction. This requires dealing with the !ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL case in hmm_vma_handle_pte(). Rather than replicating the logic of vm_normal_page() call it directly and do a check for the zero pfn similar to what get_user_pages() currently does. Also add a test to hmm selftest to verify functionality. 2022-01-15userfaultfd/selftests: clean up hugetlb allocation codeMike Kravetz1-9/+6
The message for commit f5c73297181c ("userfaultfd/selftests: fix hugetlb area allocations") says there is no need to create a hugetlb file in the non-shared testing case. However, the commit did not actually change the code to prevent creation of the file. While it is technically true that there is no need to create and use a hugetlb file in the case of non-shared-testing, it is useful. This is because 'hole punching' of a hugetlb file has the potentially incorrect side effect of also removing pages from private mappings. The userfaultfd test relies on this side effect for removing pages from the destination buffer during rounds of stress testing. Remove the incomplete code that was added to deal with no hugetlb file. Just keep the code that prevents reserves from being created for the destination area. 2022-01-15selftests/vm: make charge_reserved_hugetlb.sh work with existing cgroup settingWaiman Long3-23/+34
The hugetlb cgroup reservation test charge_reserved_hugetlb.sh assume that no cgroup filesystems are mounted before running the test. That is not true in many cases. As a result, the test fails to run. Fix that by querying the current cgroup mount setting and using the existing cgroup setup instead before attempting to freshly mount a cgroup filesystem. Similar change is also made for hugetlb_reparenting_test.sh as well, though it still has problem if cgroup v2 isn't used. The patched test scripts were run on a centos 8 based system to verify that they ran properly. 2022-01-15mm, hugepages: make memory size variable in hugepage-mremap selftestYosry Ahmed2-17/+31
The hugetlb vma mremap() test currently maps 1GB of memory to trigger pmd sharing and make sure that 'unshare' path in mremap code works. The test originally only mapped 10MB of memory (as specified by the header comment) but was later modified to 1GB to tackle this case. However, not all machines will have 1GB of memory to spare for this test. Adding a mapping size arg will allow run_vmtest.sh to pass an adequate mapping size, while allowing users to run the test independently with arbitrary size mappings. 2021-12-31userfaultfd/selftests: fix hugetlb area allocationsMike Kravetz1-6/+10
Currently, userfaultfd selftest for hugetlb as run from run_vmtests.sh or any environment where there are 'just enough' hugetlb pages will always fail with: testing events (fork, remap, remove): ERROR: UFFDIO_COPY error: -12 (errno=12, line=616) The ENOMEM error code implies there are not enough hugetlb pages. However, there are free hugetlb pages but they are all reserved. There is a basic problem with the way the test allocates hugetlb pages which has existed since the test was originally written. Due to the way 'cleanup' was done between different phases of the test, this issue was masked until recently. The issue was uncovered by commit 8ba6e8640844 ("userfaultfd/selftests: reinitialize test context in each test"). For the hugetlb test, src and dst areas are allocated as PRIVATE mappings of a hugetlb file. This means that at mmap time, pages are reserved for the src and dst areas. At the start of event testing (and other tests) the src area is populated which results in allocation of huge pages to fill the area and consumption of reserves associated with the area. Then, a child is forked to fault in the dst area. Note that the dst area was allocated in the parent and hence the parent owns the reserves associated with the mapping. The child has normal access to the dst area, but can not use the reserves created/owned by the parent. Thus, if there are no other huge pages available allocation of a page for the dst by the child will fail. Fix by not creating reserves for the dst area. In this way the child can use free (non-reserved) pages. Also, MAP_PRIVATE of a file only makes sense if you are interested in the contents of the file before making a COW copy. The test does not do this. So, just use MAP_ANONYMOUS | MAP_HUGETLB to create an anonymous hugetlb mapping. There is no need to create a hugetlb file in the non-shared case. 2021-12-10selftests/vm: remove ARRAY_SIZE define from individual testsShuah Khan3-3/+3
ARRAY_SIZE is defined in several selftests. Remove definitions from individual test files and include header file for the define instead. ARRAY_SIZE define is added in a separate patch to prepare for this change. Remove ARRAY_SIZE from vm tests and pickup the one defined in kselftest.h.
