2022-08-25hid: intel-ish-hid: ishtp: Fix ishtp client sending disordered messageEven Xu1-29/+39
There is a timing issue captured during ishtp client sending stress tests. It was observed during stress tests that ISH firmware is getting out of ordered messages. This is a rare scenario as the current set of ISH client drivers don't send much data to firmware. But this may not be the case going forward. When message size is bigger than IPC MTU, ishtp splits the message into fragments and uses serialized async method to send message fragments. The call stack: ishtp_cl_send_msg_ipc->ipc_tx_callback(first fregment)-> ishtp_send_msg(with callback)->write_ipc_to_queue-> write_ipc_from_queue->callback->ipc_tx_callback(next fregment)...... When an ipc write complete interrupt is received, driver also calls write_ipc_from_queue->ipc_tx_callback in ISR to start sending of next fragment. Through ipc_tx_callback uses spin_lock to protect message splitting, as the serialized sending method will call back to ipc_tx_callback again, so it doesn't put sending under spin_lock, it causes driver cannot guarantee all fragments be sent in order. Considering this scenario: ipc_tx_callback just finished a fragment splitting, and not call ishtp_send_msg yet, there is a write complete interrupt happens, then ISR->write_ipc_from_queue ->ipc_tx_callback->ishtp_send_msg->write_ipc_to_queue...... Because ISR has higher exec priority than normal thread, this causes the new fragment be sent out before previous fragment. This disordered message causes invalid message to firmware. The solution is, to send fragments synchronously: Use ishtp_write_message writing fragments into tx queue directly one by one, instead of ishtp_send_msg only writing one fragment with completion callback. As no completion callback be used, so change ipc_tx_callback to ipc_tx_send. A late addititon to the intel-ish-hid framework caused a build failure with clang, and introduced an ABI to the module loader that stops working if any driver ever needs to bind to more than one UUID: drivers/hid/intel-ish-hid/ishtp-fw-loader.c:1067:4: error: initializer element is not a compile-time constant Change the ishtp_device_id to have correct documentation and a driver_data field like all the other ones, and change the drivers to use the ID table as the primary identification in a way that works with all compilers and avoids duplciating the identifiers. 2021-07-21bus: Make remove callback return voidUwe Kleine-König1-3/+1
The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there is only little it can do when a device disappears. This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback. Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go away. With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate wrong expectations for driver authors. 2021-07-15HID: intel-ish-hid: use async resume functionYe Xiang1-7/+22
ISH IPC driver uses asynchronous workqueue to do resume now, but there is a potential timing issue: when child devices resume before bus driver, it will cause child devices resume failed and cannot be recovered until reboot. The current implementation in this case do wait for IPC to resume but fail to accommodate for a case when there is no ISH reboot and soft resume is taking time. This issue is apparent on Tiger Lake platform with 5.11.13 kernel when doing suspend to idle then resume(s0ix) test. To resolve this issue, we change ISHTP HID client to use asynchronous resume callback too. In the asynchronous resume callback, it waits for the ISHTP resume done event, and then notify ISHTP HID client link ready. 2021-06-14HID: intel-ish-hid: ishtp: Add dma_no_cache_snooping() callbackEven Xu2-0/+19
Different platforms have different DMA capability, on most of platforms, DMA support cache snooping. But few platforms, such as ElkhartLake (EHL), don't support cache snooping which requires cache flush from driver. So add a hardware level callback to let ishtp driver know if cache flush is needed. As most of platform support cache snooping, so driver will not do cache flush by default, until platform implements this callback and return true explicitly. 2021-03-19HID: intel_ish-hid: HBM: Use connected standby state bit during suspend/resumeYe Xiang2-3/+4
The individual sensor drivers implemented in the ISH firmware needs capability to take special actions when there is a change in the system standby state. The ISH core firmware passes this notification to individual sensor drivers in response to the OS request via connected standby bit in the SYSTEM_STATE_STATUS command. This change sets CONNECTED_STANDBY_STATE_BIT bit to 1 during suspend callback and clears during resume callback. 2020-03-21HID: intel-ish-hid: hbm.h: Replace zero-length array with flexible-array memberGustavo A. R. Silva1-1/+1
The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2], introduced in C99: struct foo { int stuff; struct boo array[]; }; By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on. Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this change: "Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1] This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle. 2019-06-26HID: intel-ish-hid: fix wrong driver_data usageHyungwoo Yang1-1/+14
Currently, in suspend() and resume(), ishtp client drivers are using driver_data to get "struct ishtp_cl_device" object which is set by bus driver. It's wrong since the driver_data should not be owned bus. driver_data should be owned by the corresponding ishtp client driver. Due to this, some ishtp client driver like cros_ec_ishtp which uses its driver_data to transfer its data to its child doesn't work correctly. So this patch removes setting driver_data in bus drier and instead of using driver_data to get "struct ishtp_cl_device", since "struct device" is embedded in "struct ishtp_cl_device", we introduce a helper function that returns "struct ishtp_cl_device" from "struct device". If we return error in the driver probe, it needs to tear down all the preparation work and retry with next driver. Adding the match callback can avoid the unnecessary entry into unmatched driver probe function for ishtp clients reported by FW. 2019-02-15HID: intel-ish-hid: remove data[128] usage on stack when sending HBM requestHong Liu3-63/+38
Instead of using an 128-byte on-stack array to store the request, we can instantiate the request on stack directly. This can save the stack usage of these functions, since most of the requests are much smaller than 128 bytes. 2019-02-15HID: intel-ish-hid: Optimize writing ipc message from queueHong Liu1-2/+0
Currently we are using one additional static variable and a spinlock to prevent contention of writing IPC messages to ISH hardware, which is not necessary. Once ISH is ready to accept new data, we can push new data to hardware. This pushing of new data is already protected by wr_processing_spinlock for contention, which is enough. So use this spinlock to check both readiness for accepting new data and once ready allow writing of ipc message from queue to ISH hardware. While here, cleaned up some space after return. 2019-02-15HID: intel-ish-hid: avoid binding wrong ishtp_cl_deviceHong Liu1-1/+3
When performing a warm reset in ishtp bus driver, the ishtp_cl_device will not be removed, its fw_client still points to the already freed ishtp_device.fw_clients array. Later after driver finishing ishtp client enumeration, this dangling pointer may cause driver to bind the wrong ishtp_cl_device to the new client, causing wrong callback to be called for messages intended for the new client. This helps in development of firmware where frequent switching of firmwares is required without Linux reboot. 2017-05-30HID: intel_ish-hid: convert timespec to ktime_tArnd Bergmann3-12/+9
The internal accounting uses 'timespec' based time stamps, which is slightly inefficient and also problematic once we get to the time_t overflow in 2038. When communicating to the firmware, we even get an open-coded 64-bit division that prevents the code from being build-tested on 32-bit architectures and is inefficient due to the double conversion from 64-bit nanoseconds to seconds+nanoseconds and then microseconds. This changes the code to use ktime_t instead. 2017-05-30HID: intel_ish-hid: clarify locking in client codeArnd Bergmann1-26/+17
I was trying to understand this code while working on a warning fix and the locking made no sense: spin_lock_irqsave() is pointless when run inside of an interrupt handler or nested inside of another spin_lock_irq() or spin_lock_irqsave(). Here it turned out that the comment above the function is wrong, as both recv_ishtp_cl_msg_dma() and recv_ishtp_cl_msg() can in fact be called from a work queue rather than an ISR, so we do have to use the irqsave() version once. This fixes the comments accordingly, removes the misleading 'dev_flags' variable and modifies the inner spinlock to not use 'irqsave'. No functional change is intended, this is just for readability and it slightly simplifies the object code. 2017-05-30HID: intel_ish-hid: fix potential uninitialized data usageArnd Bergmann1-0/+2
gcc points out an uninialized pointer dereference that could happen if we ever get to recv_ishtp_cl_msg_dma() or recv_ishtp_cl_msg() with an empty &dev->read_list: drivers/hid/intel-ish-hid/ishtp/client.c: In function 'recv_ishtp_cl_msg_dma': drivers/hid/intel-ish-hid/ishtp/client.c:1049:3: error: 'cl' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Werror=maybe-uninitialized] The warning only appeared in very few randconfig builds, as the spinlocks tend to prevent gcc from tracing the variables. I only saw it in configurations that had neither SMP nor LOCKDEP enabled. As we can see, we only enter the case if 'complete_rb' is non-NULL, and then 'cl' is known to point to complete_rb->cl. Adding another initialization to the same pointer is harmless here and makes it clear to the compiler that the behavior is well-defined.
