There are very few ISA drivers left that rely on the static probing from drivers/net/Space.o. Make them all select a new CONFIG_NETDEV_LEGACY_INIT symbol, and drop the entire probe logic when that is disabled. 2020-06-26docs: networking: reorganize driver documentation againJakub Kicinski1-2/+2
Organize driver documentation by device type. Most documents have fairly verbose yet uninformative names, so let users first select a well defined device type, and then search for a particular driver. While at it rename the section from Vendor drivers to Hardware drivers. This seems more accurate, besides people sometimes refer to out-of-tree drivers as vendor drivers. 2020-06-14treewide: replace '---help---' in Kconfig files with 'help'Masahiro Yamada1-9/+9
Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over '---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances. This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines, I also fixed the indentation. There are a variety of indentation styles found. a) 4 spaces + '---help---' b) 7 spaces + '---help---' c) 8 spaces + '---help---' d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---' e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation) f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---' g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---' In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the following commend: $ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/' Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>

2019-06-14docs: kbuild: convert docs to ReST and rename to *.rstMauro Carvalho Chehab1-3/+3
The kbuild documentation clearly shows that the documents there are written at different times: some use markdown, some use their own peculiar logic to split sections. Convert everything to ReST without affecting too much the author's style and avoiding adding uneeded markups. The conversion is actually: - add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs; - fix tables markups; - add some lists markups; - mark literal blocks; - adjust title markups. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. Documentation/networking/ is full of cryptically named files with driver documentation. This makes finding interesting information at a glance really hard. Move all those files into a directory called device_drivers (since not all drivers are for device) and fix up references. AFAIK the only version of smc9194.c with Mac support is the one in the linux-mac68k CVS repo, which never made it to the mainline. Despite that, from v2.3.45, arch/m68k/config.in listed CONFIG_SMC9194 under CONFIG_MAC. This mistake got carried over into Kconfig in v2.5.55. 2015-06-23drivers/net: remove all references to obsolete Ethernet-HOWTOPaul Gortmaker1-13/+5
This howto made sense in the 1990s when users had to manually configure ISA cards with jumpers or vendor utilities, but with the implementation of PCI it became increasingly less and less relevant, to the point where it has been well over a decade since I last updated it. And there is no value in anyone else taking over updating it either. However the references to it continue to spread as boiler plate text from one Kconfig file into the next. We are not doing end users any favours by pointing them at this old document, so lets kill it with fire, once and for all, to hopefully stop any further spread. All drivers that select MII also need to select NET_CORE because MII depends on it. This is a bit ridiculous because NET_CORE is just a menu option that doesn't enable any code by itself. There is also no need for it to be a visible option, since its users all select it. 2013-05-22net: smsc911x: don't artificially limit buildMark Rutland1-1/+1
Currently the SMSC911X driver may only be built for a specific set of architectures, being limited to do so by a Kconfig depends line. This means that if a platform wishes to use the driver, its architecture must be added to the list explicitly, introducing pointless churn. This may have been due to the driver's use of the {read,write}s{b,w,l} functions, which have since been replaced with the more standard io{read,write}{8,16,32}_rep. We can instead depend on HAS_IOMEM, which should prevent build issues while allowing the driver to be built for currently unlisted architectures, including x86 and arm64. 2011-09-15MII: fix Kconfig dependencies for MIIJeff Kirsher1-0/+5
MII Kconfig option is apart of the core networking drivers and by default NET_CORE is enabled so drivers selecting MII will have MII enabled as well. It was found using the randconfig option during testing, MII would be selected but NET_CORE could be disabled. This caused a dependency error. Resolved the dependency by selecting NET_CORE when MII is selected. Based on finds for Stephen Rothwell, where current defconfig's enable a ethernet driver and it is not compiled due to the newly added NET_VENDOR_* component of Kconfig. This patch enables all the "new" Kconfig options so that current defconfig's will continue to compile the expected drivers.
