When a filesystem is mounted with a name that starts with a #: # mount '#name' /mnt/bad -t tmpfs this will cause the entry to look like this (leading space added so that git does not strip it out): #name /mnt/bad tmpfs rw,seclabel,relatime,inode64 0 0 This breaks getmntent and any code that aims to parse fstab as well as /proc/mounts with the same logic since they need to strip leading spaces or skip over comment lines, due to which they report incorrect output or skip over the line respectively. Solve this by translating the hash character into its octal encoding equivalent so that applications can decode the name correctly. 2021-12-03fs: add is_idmapped_mnt() helperChristian Brauner1-1/+1
Multiple places open-code the same check to determine whether a given mount is idmapped. Introduce a simple helper function that can be used instead. This allows us to get rid of the fragile open-coding. We will later change the check that is used to determine whether a given mount is idmapped. 2021-01-24fs: introduce MOUNT_ATTR_IDMAPChristian Brauner1-0/+3
Introduce a new mount bind mount property to allow idmapping mounts. The MOUNT_ATTR_IDMAP flag can be set via the new mount_setattr() syscall together with a file descriptor referring to a user namespace. The user namespace referenced by the namespace file descriptor will be attached to the bind mount. All interactions with the filesystem going through that mount will be mapped according to the mapping specified in the user namespace attached to it. Using user namespaces to mark mounts means we can reuse all the existing infrastructure in the kernel that already exists to handle idmappings and can also use this for permission checking to allow unprivileged user to create idmapped mounts in the future. Idmapping a mount is decoupled from the caller's user and mount namespace. This means idmapped mounts can be created in the initial user namespace which is an important use-case for systemd-homed, portable usb-sticks between systems, sharing data between the initial user namespace and unprivileged containers, and other use-cases that have been brought up. For example, assume a home directory where all files are owned by uid and gid 1000 and the home directory is brought to a new laptop where the user has id 12345. The system administrator can simply create a mount of this home directory with a mapping of 1000:12345:1 and other mappings to indicate the ids should be kept. (With this it is e.g. also possible to create idmapped mounts on the host with an identity mapping 1:1:100000 where the root user is not mapped. A user with root access that e.g. has been pivot rooted into such a mount on the host will be not be able to execute, read, write, or create files as root.) Given that mapping a mount is decoupled from the caller's user namespace a sufficiently privileged process such as a container manager can set up an idmapped mount for the container and the container can simply pivot root to it. There's no need for the container to do anything. The mount will appear correctly mapped independent of the user namespace the container uses. This means we don't need to mark a mount as idmappable. In order to create an idmapped mount the caller must currently be privileged in the user namespace of the superblock the mount belongs to. Once a mount has been idmapped we don't allow it to change its mapping. This keeps permission checking and life-cycle management simple. Users wanting to change the idmapped can always create a new detached mount with a different idmapping. 2020-12-27proc mountinfo: make splice available againLinus Torvalds1-3/+6
Since commit 36e2c7421f02 ("fs: don't allow splice read/write without explicit ops") we've required that file operation structures explicitly enable splice support, rather than falling back to the default handlers. Most /proc files use the indirect 'struct proc_ops' to describe their file operations, and were fixed up to support splice earlier in commits 40be821d627c..b24c30c67863, but the mountinfo files interact with the VFS directly using their own 'struct file_operations' and got missed as a result. This adds the necessary support for splice to work for /proc/*/mountinfo and friends. 2020-08-27Add a "nosymfollow" mount option.Mattias Nissler1-0/+1
For mounts that have the new "nosymfollow" option, don't follow symlinks when resolving paths. The new option is similar in spirit to the existing "nodev", "noexec", and "nosuid" options, as well as to the LOOKUP_NO_SYMLINKS resolve flag in the openat2(2) syscall. Various BSD variants have been supporting the "nosymfollow" mount option for a long time with equivalent implementations. Note that symlinks may still be created on file systems mounted with the "nosymfollow" option present. readlink() remains functional, so user space code that is aware of symlinks can still choose to follow them explicitly. Setting the "nosymfollow" mount option helps prevent privileged writers from modifying files unintentionally in case there is an unexpected link along the accessed path. The "nosymfollow" option is thus useful as a defensive measure for systems that need to deal with untrusted file systems in privileged contexts. 2020-05-14proc/mounts: add cursorMiklos Szeredi1-1/+3
If mounts are deleted after a read(2) call on /proc/self/mounts (or its kin), the subsequent read(2) could miss a mount that comes after the deleted one in the list. This is because the file position is interpreted as the number mount entries from the start of the list. E.g. first read gets entries #0 to #9; the seq file index will be 10. Then entry #5 is deleted, resulting in #10 becoming #9 and #11 becoming #10, etc... The next read will continue from entry #10, and #9 is missed. Solve this by adding a cursor entry for each open instance. Taking the global namespace_sem for write seems excessive, since we are only dealing with a per-namespace list. Instead add a per-namespace spinlock and use that together with namespace_sem taken for read to protect against concurrent modification of the mount list. This may reduce parallelism of is_local_mountpoint(), but it's hardly a big contention point. We could also use RCU freeing of cursors to make traversal not need additional locks, if that turns out to be neceesary. Only move the cursor once for each read (cursor is not added on open) to minimize cacheline invalidation. When EOF is reached, the cursor is taken off the list, in order to prevent an excessive number of cursors due to inactive open file descriptors. The unused vfs code can be removed. Don't pass empty subtype (same as if ->parse callback isn't called). The bits that are left involve determining whether it's permitted to split the filesystem type string passed in to mount(2). Consequently, this means that we cannot get rid of the FS_HAS_SUBTYPE flag unless we define that a type string with a dot in it always indicates a subtype specification. Pull poll annotations from Al Viro: "This introduces a __bitwise type for POLL### bitmap, and propagates the annotations through the tree. Most of that stuff is as simple as 'make ->poll() instances return __poll_t and do the same to local variables used to hold the future return value'. Some of the obvious brainos found in process are fixed (e.g. POLLIN misspelled as POLL_IN). At that point the amount of sparse warnings is low and most of them are for genuine bugs - e.g. ->poll() instance deciding to return -EINVAL instead of a bitmap. I hadn't touched those in this series - it's large enough as it is. Another problem it has caught was eventpoll() ABI mess; select.c and eventpoll.c assumed that corresponding POLL### and EPOLL### were equal. That's true for some, but not all of them - EPOLL### are arch-independent, but POLL### are not. The last commit in this series separates userland POLL### values from the (now arch-independent) kernel-side ones, converting between them in the few places where they are copied to/from userland. AFAICS, this is the least disruptive fix preserving poll(2) ABI and making epoll() work on all architectures. As it is, it's simply broken on sparc - try to give it EPOLLWRNORM and it will trigger only on what would've triggered EPOLLWRBAND on other architectures. EPOLLWRBAND and EPOLLRDHUP, OTOH, are never triggered at all on sparc. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. Please do not apply this to mainline directly, instead please re-run the coccinelle script shown below and apply its output. For several reasons, it is desirable to use {READ,WRITE}_ONCE() in preference to ACCESS_ONCE(), and new code is expected to use one of the former. So far, there's been no reason to change most existing uses of ACCESS_ONCE(), as these aren't harmful, and changing them results in churn. However, for some features, the read/write distinction is critical to correct operation. To distinguish these cases, separate read/write accessors must be used. 2015-06-30fs: use seq_open_private() for proc_mountsYann Droneaud1-18/+16
A patchset to remove support for passing pre-allocated struct seq_file to seq_open(). Such feature is undocumented and prone to error. In particular, if seq_release() is used in release handler, it will kfree() a pointer which was not allocated by seq_open(). So this patchset drops support for pre-allocated struct seq_file: it's only of use in proc_namespace.c and can be easily replaced by using seq_open_private()/seq_release_private(). Additionally, it documents the use of file->private_data to hold pointer to struct seq_file by seq_open(). This patch (of 3): Since patch described below, from v2.6.15-rc1, seq_open() could use a struct seq_file already allocated by the caller if the pointer to the structure is stored in file->private_data before calling the function. 2015-02-05vfs: add support for a lazytime mount optionTheodore Ts'o1-0/+1
Add a new mount option which enables a new "lazytime" mode. This mode causes atime, mtime, and ctime updates to only be made to the in-memory version of the inode. The on-disk times will only get updated when (a) if the inode needs to be updated for some non-time related change, (b) if userspace calls fsync(), syncfs() or sync(), or (c) just before an undeleted inode is evicted from memory. This is OK according to POSIX because there are no guarantees after a crash unless userspace explicitly requests via a fsync(2) call. For workloads which feature a large number of random write to a preallocated file, the lazytime mount option significantly reduces writes to the inode table. The repeated 4k writes to a single block will result in undesirable stress on flash devices and SMR disk drives. Even on conventional HDD's, the repeated writes to the inode table block will trigger Adjacent Track Interference (ATI) remediation latencies, which very negatively impact long tail latencies --- which is a very big deal for web serving tiers (for example). The synchronous syncrhonize_rcu in switch_task_namespaces makes setns a sufficiently expensive system call that people have complained. Upon inspect nsproxy no longer needs rcu protection for remote reads. remote reads are rare. So optimize for same process reads and write by switching using rask_lock instead. This yields a simpler to understand lock, and a faster setns system call. In particular this fixes a performance regression observed by Rafael David Tinoco <rafael.tinoco@canonical.com>. This is effectively a revert of Pavel Emelyanov's commit cf7b708c8d1d7a27736771bcf4c457b332b0f818 Make access to task's nsproxy lighter from 2007. lglocks and brlocks are currently generated with some complicated macros in lglock.h. But there's no reason to not just use common utility functions and put all the data into a common data structure. In preparation, this patch changes the API to look more like normal function calls with pointers, not magic macros. The patch is rather large because I move over all users in one go to keep it bisectable. This impacts the VFS somewhat in terms of lines changed. But no actual behaviour change.
