kernel-owned pages to preserve error context and prevent delayed,
silent data corruption
- "mm/damon: refactor damon_{start,stop,commit}() for simple error
handling" (SJ Park)

fail, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone caller-side
cleanup code
- "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan)
Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound
or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio
splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows
the removal of redundant private field clearing inside
prep_compound_tail()
- "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry
Song)
Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in
wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock
contention and system overhead
By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining
and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a
30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads
- "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu)
Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state
to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving
MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h.
- "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl
Shutsemau)
Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest
memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to
tiered or remote storage
- "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David
Hildenbrand)
Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE,
performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap
pages on the way.
- "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park)
Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated
when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the
behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames
existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to
probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to
maintain measurement accuracy.
- "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin)
Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where
thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock
contention.
By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it
reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to
under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under
memory pressure.
- "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport)
Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse
into new headers
- "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin)
Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to
collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during
KSM memory error handling.
It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the
anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range,
reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency.
- "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali
Patil)
Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can
report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not
satisfied
- "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park)
Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing
users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or
cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring.
By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely
disable access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on
weighted probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for
attribute-focused workloads.
- "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for userfaultfd-backed mappings"
(Stanislav Kinsburskii)
Extend hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by
allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new
hmm_range_fault_locked() helper.
By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock
release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd
regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers.
- "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and
manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel
It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while
renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their
functionality.
These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that
will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd
folios.
- "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif)
Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk
callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
created during HMM migrations
It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock()
properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present
THP or a standard migration entry.
- "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain)
Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb,
anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated
functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous
large folio unmapping.
- "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu)
Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI
document
- "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price)
Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM
infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing
entire memory regions
By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it
enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward
compatibility.
- "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type
to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure.
It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(),
unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like
mlock, mprotect, and mremap.
- "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin)
Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate
slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code
documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must
remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions.
- "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park)
Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only
fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access
from outer layers.
It enforces encapsulation across core structures including
damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to
interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct
members.
- "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races"
(SJ Park)
Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race
conditions identified in DAMON
It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a
NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring
accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races.
- "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan
Jackman)
Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages
on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks
via non-PCP or isolated migration paths.
It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation
risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory
hotplug or large allocation frees.
- "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan
Jackman)
Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and
debug assertions.
It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming
convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from
high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete
VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths.
- "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API
boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity.
It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a
dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO,
eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only
to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no
functional changes intended.
- "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive
reclaim" (Ridong Chen)
Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across
memory reclaim paths
It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so
unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page
cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead
of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete
gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim().
- "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang)
Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it
removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP
pages as non-resident.
- "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau)
Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API
- "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation
bugs" (SJ Park)
Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by
Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent
occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses
in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling.
- "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu)
Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags
without altering functionality.
It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag
bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*()
helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling.
- "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain)
Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within
userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching
capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed().
This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in
try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control
flow and complexity.
- "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()"
(Sang-Heon Jeon)
Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of
__late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after
early_ioremap_reset()
It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset()
must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset
calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures.
- "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner)
Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious
OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta
production
It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation
requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at
pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather
than spinning unproductively.
- "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior)
Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating
per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances
This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map
instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic
lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports
when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems.

Some legacy fbdev drivers may incorrectly set info->screen_size to a
value larger than the actual mapped framebuffer size (info->fix.smem_len)
during mode switches. This could allow out-of-bounds I/O and system
memory accesses in fb_io_read(), fb_io_write(), fb_sys_read(), and
fb_sys_write().
Prevent this by clamping total_size to smem_len when smem_len is non-zero.
Virtual framebuffers (smem_len == 0) are unaffected.
This is a hardening measure; no specific crash is fixed by this patch.

bit_cursor() fetches the glyph under the cursor with
c = scr_readw(vc_pos);
src = vc_font.data + ((c & charmask) * w * height);
where charmask is 0x1ff when vc_hi_font_mask is set. The screen buffer
value comes directly from scr_readw() and may be larger than the current
font's glyph count.
Syzkaller triggers this via vcs_write(). The Call Trace shows
vcs_write() in vc_screen.c writing an arbitrary 16-bit value with
writev() to /dev/vcsa, which vcs_write_buf() in vc_screen.c stores via
vcs_scr_writew() without checking charcount. The stored value is later
read in bit_cursor() in bitblit.c.
When the font is changed from a font with 512 glyphs to a font with
256 glyphs, the screen buffer can retain characters with the high
bit set from the previous mode, which could also produce the same
out-of-bounds access.
BUG: KASAN: global-out-of-bounds in soft_cursor+0x378/0x6bc drivers/video/fbdev/core/softcursor.c:70

bit_putcs_aligned() and bit_putcs_unaligned() already clamp the glyph
index to vc_font.charcount. Apply the same clamp in bit_cursor() after
extracting the attribute and masking, before indexing fontdata.
The fix completes the bounds checking started in commit 18c4ef4e765a
("fbdev: bitblit: bound-check glyph index in bit_putcs*"), which missed
the cursor path.
This change should be safe because the clamp reuses the existing
contract from fbcon: charcount is maintained under console_lock in
con_font_set() and fbcon_font_set(), and hi_font_mask is cleared when
switching from 512 to 256 glyphs. When stale screen data with high bits
remains after a font switch, or when vcs_write() stores an arbitrary
value, clamping the index to 0 prevents the out-of-bounds read without
changing cursor semantics — the same fallback bit_putcs uses.

3) issue two ioctls: first a KDFONTOP ioctl with op.op = KD_FONT_OP_SET,
op.width = 8 and op.height = 1, then a TIOCL_SETSEL ioctl
4) echo 3 > /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fbcon/rotate_all
[CAUSE]
The root cause is that fbcon_modechanged() first sets the current rotate's
corresponding ops. Subsequently, during vc_resize(), it may trigger
clear_selection(), and in fbcon_putcs->ccw_putcs[rotate=3], this can result
in an out-of-bounds access to "src". This happens because par->rotated.buf
is reallocated in fbcon_rotate_font():
1) When rotate=2, its size is (width + 7) / 8 * height
2) When rotate=3, its size is (height + 7) / 8 * width
And the call to fbcon_rotate_font() occurs after clear_selection(). In
other words, the fontbuffer is allocated using the size calculated from the
previous rotation 2, but before reallocating it with the new size,
con_putcs is already using the new rotation 3:

...
image.dy = vyres - ((xx + count) * vc->vc_font.width) [1] // overflow!

// old buf size is still being used during the read!
src = par->rotated.buf + (scr_readw(s--) & charmask) * cellsize

// offset: image->dy * bits_per_line + image->dx * bpp

fbcon_switch
fbcon_rotate_font
font_data_rotate
dst = kmalloc_array(charcount, d_cellsize, GFP_KERNEL)
// the new size is allocated only here!
par->rotated.buf = buf [6]
[FIX]
A fairly obvious approach is to follow fbcon_switch(): in
fbcon_modechanged(), call rotate_font() before vc_resize() so that a
correctly sized buffer is allocated in time, as done in [6]. This fix is
necessary, but it is not sufficient on its own.
In [1] it causes an image.dy overflow (ccw_putcs: vyres = 768,
image.dy = 4294967040), because vc_cols has not been updated in time at
this point (it is likewise only updated after clear_selection()). This
allows (xx + count) * width to exceed vyres, causing image.dy to overflow.
Subsequently, address in [3] is incremented by an even larger amount, which
triggers a page fault at [4].
Therefore, a second fix is required in combination with the first: move
clear_selection() earlier, before set_blitting_type() in
fbcon_set_all_vcs(), to prevent the out-of-bounds access. fbcon_rotate()
has a similar problem, so add the same clear there. Since vc_is_sel() is
not exported, the fbdev side is currently forced to call clear_selection()
unconditionally, causing the global selection to be cleared prematurely.
And this will not cause any other significant impact.

In fb_io_read(), if copy_to_user() performs a partial copy (e.g., due to
a faulty user buffer), the loop adjusts the chunk size 'c' and updates
the remaining 'count'. However, the hardware 'src' pointer has already
been eagerly advanced by the original chunk size.
If the loop is allowed to continue, the read will resume from an
incorrect, over-advanced offset. Since the remaining 'count' was only
decremented by the successful bytes, this desynchronization causes the
next iterations to execute more hardware reads than originally bounded,
eventually leading to out-of-bounds I/O reads.
Fix this by breaking out of the loop immediately upon a partial
copy_to_user(). A partial copy indicates a faulty user buffer, making
subsequent read attempts futile. Breaking out ensures we return the
number of successfully read bytes without risking out-of-bounds hardware
accesses in subsequent mismatched iterations.

show_mode(), show_modes(), and store_mode() access fb_info->modelist
and fb_info->mode without holding lock_fb_info(). store_modes() takes
lock_fb_info() while replacing the modelist and freeing the old one.
A concurrent reader or writer can load a pointer to an old modelist
entry before store_modes() frees it, then dereference freed memory or
store a stale freed pointer in fb_info->mode.
Take lock_fb_info() in show_mode(), show_modes(), and store_mode() to
serialize with store_modes(). In show_mode(), copy the mode to the
stack and format after dropping the lock. In store_mode(), split
activate() into a _locked variant to avoid double-locking, and hold
the locks for the modelist walk, mode conversion, activation, and
fb_info->mode assignment together.

fb_set_var() can delete a mode from info->modelist when userspace
passes FB_ACTIVATE_INV_MODE through FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO. The code
checks that the mode being deleted is not the current info->var and
that fbcon is not using it, but it does not check fb_info->mode.
fb_info->mode may still point into the modelist entry being deleted.
If the entry is freed, later mode sysfs reads through show_mode() can
dereference a stale pointer.

mode_string() uses snprintf() which can return a value larger than the
remaining buffer space. show_modes() accumulates the return value into i
without checking whether i has reached PAGE_SIZE, causing the offset to
advance past the sysfs buffer if the modelist is long enough.
Add a size parameter to mode_string() and use scnprintf() to return
only the bytes actually written. Add an early return when offset
already exceeds the buffer. In show_modes(), stop accumulating once

info->var, a framebuffer's current mode, is expected to have a matching
entry in info->modelist. var_to_display() relies on this and treats a
failed fb_match_mode() as "This should not happen". fb_set_var() keeps it
true by adding the mode to the list on every change, and
do_register_framebuffer() does the same at registration.
store_modes() replaces the modelist from userspace. fb_new_modelist()
validates the new modes but does not check that info->var still has a
match. It relies on fbcon_new_modelist() to re-point consoles, but that
only handles consoles mapped to the framebuffer. With fbcon unbound there
are none, so info->var is left describing a mode that is no longer in the
list.
A later console takeover runs var_to_display(), where fb_match_mode()
returns NULL and leaves fb_display[i].mode NULL. fbcon_switch() passes it
to display_to_var(), and fb_videomode_to_var() dereferences the NULL mode.
Keep the current mode in the list in fb_new_modelist(), the same way
fb_set_var() does.

fbcon_new_modelist() runs when a framebuffer's modelist changes. For each
console mapped to it with fb_display[i].mode set, it reads vc_cons[i].d and
passes the vc_num to fbcon_set_disp(). This assumes a console with a mode
set has a vc_data, but it can be NULL. fbcon_set_disp() sets
fb_display[i].mode before it checks vc_data, and fbcon_deinit() leaves the
mode set after the vc_data is freed. fbcon_new_modelist() then dereferences
the NULL vc_data.
Keep fb_display[i].mode set only while the console has a vc_data. Check
vc_data before setting the mode in fbcon_set_disp(), and clear the mode in
fbcon_deinit(). The existing mode check in fbcon_new_modelist() then skips
such consoles.

store_modes() replaces a framebuffer's modelist with modes from userspace.
On success it frees the old modelist with fb_destroy_modelist(). Two
fields still point into that freed list.
One pointer is fb_display[i].mode, the mode a console is using.
fbcon_new_modelist() moves these pointers to the new list. It only does so
for consoles still mapped to the framebuffer. An unmapped console is
skipped and keeps its stale pointer. Unbinding fbcon, for example, sets
con2fb_map[i] to -1 but leaves fb_display[i].mode set. An
FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO ioctl with FB_ACTIVATE_INV_MODE later reaches
fbcon_mode_deleted(). That function reads the stale fb_display[i].mode
through fb_mode_is_equal(). The read is a use-after-free.
The other pointer is fb_info->mode, the current mode. It is set through
the mode sysfs attribute. store_modes() does not update fb_info->mode, so
it is left pointing into the freed list. show_mode(), the attribute's read
handler, dereferences the stale fb_info->mode through mode_string(). The
read is a use-after-free.
Clear both pointers before freeing the list. Commit a1f305893074 ("fbcon:
Set fb_display[i]->mode to NULL when the mode is released") added the
helper fbcon_delete_modelist(). It clears every fb_display[i].mode that
points into a given list. So far it is called only from the unregister
path. Call it from store_modes() too, and set fb_info->mode to NULL.

When fbcon_do_set_font() fails (e.g., due to a memory allocation failure
inside vc_resize() under heavy memory pressure), it jumps to the `err_out`
label to roll back the console state. However, the current rollback logic
forgets to restore the `hi_font` state, leading to a severe state machine
corruption.
Earlier in the function, `set_vc_hi_font()` might be called to change
`vc->vc_hi_font_mask` and mutate the screen buffer. If `vc_resize()`
subsequently fails, the `err_out` path restores `vc_font.charcount`
but entirely skips rolling back the `vc_hi_font_mask` and the screen
buffer.
This mismatch leaves the terminal in a desynchronized state. Because
`vc_hi_font_mask` remains set, the VT subsystem will still accept
character indices greater than 255 from userspace and write them to the
screen buffer. Subsequent rendering calls (e.g., `fbcon_putcs()`) will
then use these inflated indices to access the reverted, 256-character
font array, leading to a deterministic out-of-bounds read and potential
kernel memory disclosure.
Fix this by adding the missing rollback logic for the `hi_font` mask
and screen buffer in the error path.

The 1920x1080@60 modedb entry has one too many initializers before
its sync field: a stray "0" occupies the sync slot, which shifts the
remaining values by one field. The entry therefore decodes as
sync = 0, vmode = FB_SYNC_HOR_HIGH_ACT | FB_SYNC_VERT_HIGH_ACT (0x3,
i.e. FB_VMODE_INTERLACED | FB_VMODE_DOUBLE), and flag =
FB_VMODE_NONINTERLACED, instead of the intended sync = positive H/V,
vmode = non-interlaced.
fb_find_mode() then returns a 1920x1080 mode flagged as interlaced +
doublescan with active-low syncs. Drivers that honour var->vmode and
var->sync when programming display timing enable doublescan and the
wrong sync polarity, corrupting the output.
Drop the stray initializer so sync and vmode hold their intended

Move the glyph rotation helpers from fbcon to the font library. Wrap them
behind clean interfaces. Also clear the output memory to zero. Previously,
the implementation relied on the caller to do that.
Go through the fbcon code and callers of the glyph-rotation helpers. In
addition to the font rotation, there's also the cursor code, which uses
the rotation helpers.
The font-rotation relied on a single memset to zero for the whole font.
This is now multiple memsets on each glyph. This will be sorted out when
the font library also implements font rotation.
Building glyph rotation in the font library still depends on
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y. If we get more users of the code,
we can still add a dedicated Kconfig symbol to the font library.

Add font_data_export() and update consoles to use it.
The helper font_data_export() is based on code in fbcon_get_font().
It extends the size of a single glyph to match the requested vpitch,
which us usually 32 bytes for fonts from user space. Internal fonts
have a pitch according to the glyph's height.
The implementation of font_data_export() differs in several ways from
the original code. The original implementation distinguished between
different pitches of the font data. This is not necessary as the pitch
is a parameter in the copying.
There was also special handling for a font pitch of 3 bytes, which got
expanded to 4 bytes (with trailing bits on each scanline). The logic
originated from long before git history exists even in the historical
tree. So it is not clear why this was implemented. It is not what user
space expects. The setfont utitlity loads font with 3-bytes pitches and
expects to read such fonts with a 3-byte pitch. For any font width, the
font pitch is always the width extended to the next multiple of 8. See
[1] for the user-space font-reading code.
With the changes to handling the font pitches, font_data_export() replaces
the original code's various special cases with a single copying logic.

Add font_data_import() and update consoles to use it.
The implementation of font_data_import() is based on code from fbcon,
which supports overflow checks and crc32 checksums. Fbcon uses the crc32
checksum.
Newport_con now implements the same overflow checks as fbcon. As before,
this console does not support checksums, which are optional. Newport_con
can now also handle input font data with a vertical pitch other than 32
bytes. (The vertical pitch is the offset between two glyphs in the font
data.)
As an internal change, remove the const qualifier from the data field
if struct font_data. This allows font_data_import() to write the data
without type casting. For all users of the font data via font_data_t,
the stored data is still read only.

the checksums have to be equal.
The new helper also guarantees to not compare internal fonts against
fonts from user space. Internal fonts cannot be ref-counted, so making
them equal to user-space fonts with the same byte sequence results in
undefined behavior.
The test only compares data buffers. Their interpretation is up each
console. Therefore remove a width test in fbcon_set_font().

Add font_data_get() and font_data_put(). Update consoles to use them
over REFCOUNT() and plain kfree().
Newly allocated font data starts with a reference count of 1. Loading
the font puts the previously loaded font. If the reference count reaches
zero, font_data_put() frees the font data.
The kernel stores a refcount of zero for internal font data. Invoking
font_data_get() and font_data_put() tests this internally and returns
success without further operation. From the caller's perspective,
getting and putting works the same for all font data.
Fbcon used the userfont flag distinguish between internal fonts and
fonts loaded by user space. Only the latter where refcounted. With the
new helper's automatic handling of internal font data, remove the
userfont flag from fbcon.
Newport_con uses a default font, FONT_DATA, until user space loads
custom font data. Remove all special cases for FONT_DATA, as the get
and put calls' read-only handling also covers this case.

Store font data as pointer to font_data_t instead of unsigned char.
Update consoles.
Pointers to font data refer to the raw data. There is a hidden header
before the data that contains additional state. Document the existing
layout and semantics of font_data_t.
The data field in struct vc_font can be used by any console. Therefore
it still points to plain data without the additional header. Fbcon sets
its value from struct fbcon_display.fontdata. Hence, update the size
test in fbcon_resize() to use struct fbcon_display.fontdata instead of
struct vc_font.data.

Replace struct console_font with struct vc_font for the type of the
vc_font field of struct vc_data. Struct console_font is UAPI, which
prevents further changes. Hence a new data type is required.
Struct console_font has a documented vertical pitch of 32 bytes. This
is not the case after the font data has been loaded into the kernel.
Changing the type of vc_font addresses this inconsistency.
The font data is now declared as constant, as it might come from the
kernel's read-only section. There's some fallout throughout the console
code where non-const variables refer to it. Fix them. A later update
will declare the font data to a dedicated data type.

Fbdev's padding helpers do not modify the source buffer. Declare the
parameter as 'const'.
Fbcon's font-rendering code calls these helpers with the font data.
Declaring src as const will allow for making the font data constant
as well.
While at it, also remove the extern qualifier from the function
declarations in the header file.

Acquire a module reference on each mmap and VMA open; hold it until
the kernel closes the VMA. Protects against unloading the module
while user space still has a mapping of the graphics memory. The
VMA page-fault handling would then call into undefined code.
This situation can happen if the underlying device has been unplugged
and the driver has been unloaded. It would then be possible to trigger
the bug by unloading the fbdev core module.

Hold state of deferred I/O in struct fb_deferred_io_state. Allocate an
instance as part of initializing deferred I/O and remove it only after
the final mapping has been closed. If the fb_info and the contained
deferred I/O meanwhile goes away, clear struct fb_deferred_io_state.info
to invalidate the mapping. Any access will then result in a SIGBUS
signal.
Fixes a long-standing problem, where a device hot-unplug happens while
user space still has an active mapping of the graphics memory. The hot-
unplug frees the instance of struct fb_info. Accessing the memory will
operate on undefined state.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

do_con_write(), fbcon_redraw.*() invoke console_conditional_schedule()
which is a conditional scheduling point based on printk's internal
variables console_may_schedule. It may only be used if the console lock
is acquired for instance via console_lock() or console_trylock().
Prinkt sets the internal variable to 1 (and allows to schedule)
if the console lock has been acquired via console_lock(). The trylock
does not allow it.
The console_conditional_schedule() invocation in do_con_write() is
invoked shortly before console_unlock().
The console_conditional_schedule() invocation in fbcon_redraw.*()
original from fbcon_scroll() / vt's con_scroll() which originate from a
line feed.
In console_unlock() the variable is set to 0 (forbids to schedule) and
it tries to schedule while making progress printing. This is brand new
compared to when console_conditional_schedule() was added in v2.4.9.11.
In v2.6.38-rc3, console_unlock() (started its existence) iterated over
all consoles and flushed them with disabled interrupts. A scheduling
attempt here was not possible, it relied that a long print scheduled
before console_unlock().
Since commit 8d91f8b15361d ("printk: do cond_resched() between lines
while outputting to consoles"), which appeared in v4.5-rc1,
console_unlock() attempts to schedule if it was allowed to schedule
while during console_lock(). Each record is idealy one line so after
every line feed.
This console_conditional_schedule() is also only relevant on
PREEMPT_NONE and PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY builds. In other configurations
cond_resched() becomes a nop and has no impact.
I'm bringing this all up just proof that it is not required anymore. It
becomes a problem on a PREEMPT_RT build with debug code enabled because
that might_sleep() in cond_resched() remains and triggers a warnings.
This is due to
legacy_kthread_func-> console_flush_one_record -> vt_console_print-> lf
-> con_scroll -> fbcon_scroll
and vt_console_print() acquires a spinlock_t which does not allow a
voluntary schedule. There is no need to fb_scroll() to schedule since
console_flush_one_record() attempts to schedule after each line.
!PREEMPT_RT is not affected because the legacy printing thread is only
enabled on PREEMPT_RT builds.
Therefore I suggest to remove console_conditional_schedule().

The fbdev sysfs attributes are registered after sending the uevent for
the device creation, leaving a race window where e.g. udev rules may
not be able to access the sysfs attributes because the registration is
not done yet.
Fix this by switching to device_create_with_groups(). This also results in
a nice cleanup. After switching to device_create_with_groups() all that
is left of fb_init_device() is setting the drvdata and that can be passed
to device_create[_with_groups]() too. After which fb_init_device() can
be completely removed.
Dropping fb_init_device() + fb_cleanup_device() in turn allows removing
fb_info.class_flag as they were the only user of this field.
