2026-08-10drm/connector/hdmi: Fix out of bounds memory readJohn Harrison1-1/+2
A helper function was copying a given audio infoframe into the connector's copy but using the size of the destination (a generic target, sized to accept many different data blocks) not the source (a very specific type of data block). Thus, it was copying 60 bytes of data from a 28 byte allocation. Fix that by using the source size instead, together with a build bug on the source size actually being smaller than the destination. I hit this running KUnit tests under KASAN (while debugging something else entirely). In the real world, it seems unlikely to cause an actual problem. It is a read not a write so it can't corrupt any memory. However, it could potentially fall off the end of a page and cause an accvio bug. 2026-07-29drm/dp: Read the PCON max FRL bandwidth only for HDMI DFPsAlexander Kaplan1-0/+12
The PCON max FRL bandwidth field lives in byte 2 of the DFP Detailed Capability Info (DPCD 0x82 for the first DFP). The DP standard defines the meaning of descriptor bytes 1-3 strictly per DFP type, and for a DisplayPort type DFP all of them are reserved, with "read all 0s" semantics (DP v2.0, section 2.12.3, Table 2-183). The FRL bandwidth field is an HDMI DFP extension added by the VESA DP-to-HDMI PCON specification. drm_dp_get_pcon_max_frl_bw() however parses the byte without checking the DFP type, the branch presence or DETAILED_CAP_INFO_AVAILABLE. Without the latter the port descriptors are one byte wide and port_cap[2] is not even the right register. All neighbouring helpers parsing the same descriptor are scoped by the DFP type already, see for instance drm_dp_downstream_max_bpc() reading the same byte and returning 0 for a DP type DFP. amdgpu's DC parses the field only for HDMI(/DP++) detailed types as well. This is not theoretical. A Synaptics VMM7100 based USB-C to HDMI adapter with a macOS targeted firmware advertises a DisplayPort type DFP with the type byte replicated across the whole descriptor (08 08 08 08). i915 decodes that as "PCON limited to 18 Gbps FRL" and prunes every mode above ~750 MHz dotclock, including all the 4k@100/120 modes the sink EDID offers, while macOS drives 4k@120 through the same adapter just fine via DP DSC (and amdgpu's type-scoped parser would ignore the bogus field as well). Only parse the field for an HDMI DFP behind a DPCD 1.1+ branch device that reports detailed cap info, matching the type-scoped field layout of the spec and the rest of the helpers. Following commits converted all users to the _scoped variant. Finally commit 2f08387a444c ("drm/bridge: remove drm_for_each_bridge_in_chain()") removed the old drm_for_each_bridge_in_chain() macro. It's time to rename drm_for_each_bridge_in_chain_scoped() back to the original name. 2026-07-01drm/dp_mst: Handle torn-down topology gracefully in drm_dp_mst_topology_queue_probe()Luca Coelho1-1/+3
A hotplug or link-loss event can tear down the MST topology (setting mgr->mst_state = false and mgr->mst_primary = NULL) concurrently with a caller invoking drm_dp_mst_topology_queue_probe(). Since the check is already performed under mgr->lock, the condition is not a programming error but a valid race -- the topology was valid when the caller decided to call this function, but was torn down before the lock was acquired. Replace the drm_WARN_ON() with a graceful early return. This eliminates spurious kernel warnings and the resulting compositor crashes observed when connecting/disconnecting DP MST monitors, while keeping the correct behavior of doing nothing when MST is not active. A drm_dbg_mst() trace is added so the skipped probe remains observable under MST debug logging. The existing WARN_ON(mgr->mst_primary) in drm_dp_mst_topology_mgr_set_mst() already catches the case where the topology is initialized twice, so no diagnostic coverage is lost. 2026-06-09drm/display: hdmi-state-helper: Try subsampling in mode_validNicolas Frattaroli1-1/+14
drm_hdmi_connector_mode_valid assumes modes are only valid if they work with RGB. The reality is more complex however: YCbCr 4:2:0 chroma-subsampled modes only require half the pixel clock that the same mode would require in RGB. This leads to drm_hdmi_connector_mode_valid rejecting perfectly valid 420-only or 420-also modes. Fix this by checking whether the mode is 420-capable first. If so, then proceed by checking it with DRM_OUTPUT_COLOR_FORMAT_YCBCR420 so long as the connector has legalized 420, otherwise error out. If the mode is not 420-capable, check with RGB as was previously always the case. With the introduction of the "color format" DRM property, which allows userspace to request a specific color format, the HDMI state helper should implement this. Implement it by translating the requested drm_connector_color_format to a drm_output_color_format enum value as per the logic HDMI should use for this: Auto is translated to RGB, and a fallback to YUV420 is only performed if the original color format was auto. In preparation for adding a COUNT value to the end of the enum, this needs to be dealt with. __drm_atomic_helper_connector_hdmi_reset() is typically used to initialize a newly allocated drm_connector_state when the connector is using the HDMI helpers, and is being called by the drm_connector_funcs.reset implementation. Since we want to consolidate DRM objects state allocation around the atomic_create_state callback that will only allocate and initialize a new drm_connector_state instance, we will need to call __drm_atomic_helper_connector_hdmi_reset() from both the reset and atomic_create hooks. To avoid any confusion, we can thus rename __drm_atomic_helper_connector_hdmi_reset() to __drm_atomic_helper_connector_hdmi_state_init(). 2026-05-27drm/dp: Add DSC virtual DPCD quirk for Realtek MST branch deviceImre Deak1-0/+2
The ASUS DC301 USB-C dock containing a Realtek MST branch device supports the DSC decompression functionality on each of the dock's downstream connectors, even though there is no discoverable peer-to-peer virtual device in the MST topology (which the DP Standard requires/suggests to control the DSC functionality on a per-DFP basis). Add the DP_DPCD_QUIRK_DSC_WITHOUT_VIRTUAL_DPCD quirk for this branch device as well to enable the DSC decompression functionality on all DFP connectors of the dock, similarly to how this is done for dock's containing older Synaptics branch devices. Three sideband reply parsers read 16-bit fields as: val = (raw->msg[idx] << 8) | (raw->msg[idx+1]); and check bounds only after the fact. When idx == raw->curlen, raw->msg[idx+1] reads one byte past the received message data into the following struct fields (curchunk_len, curchunk_idx, curlen). Affected functions: - drm_dp_sideband_parse_enum_path_resources_ack() full_payload_bw_number and avail_payload_bw_number fields - drm_dp_sideband_parse_allocate_payload_ack() allocated_pbn field - drm_dp_sideband_parse_query_payload_ack() allocated_pbn field Fix by using a single combined check (idx + 2 > curlen) before each 2-byte read. Since the check is strictly tighter than idx > curlen, no separate step is needed. 2026-05-18drm/dp/mst: fix OOB reads in remote DPCD/I2C sideband reply parsersAshutosh Desai1-2/+4
drm_dp_sideband_parse_remote_dpcd_read() reads num_bytes from the raw message and then unconditionally does: memcpy(bytes, &raw->msg[idx], num_bytes); without checking that idx + num_bytes <= raw->curlen. raw->msg[] is 256 bytes; if a malicious or misbehaving MST hub sets num_bytes larger than the remaining payload, the memcpy reads past the received data into whatever follows in raw->msg[]. drm_dp_sideband_parse_remote_i2c_read_ack() has the same flaw (noted with a /* TODO check */ comment since the code was introduced). Fix both functions by using a single combined check (idx + num_bytes > curlen) before each memcpy. Since num_bytes is u8, it is always >= 0, so this strictly subsumes the simpler idx > curlen form and no separate step is needed. 2026-05-07drm/dp/mst: fix buffer overflows in sideband chunk accumulationAshutosh Desai1-0/+9
drm_dp_sideband_append_payload() has three related bugs when processing device-provided sideband reply data: 1. Zero-length curchunk_len underflow: msg_len is a 6-bit field taken directly from the DP sideband header. If a device sends msg_len=0, curchunk_len is set to zero. The condition (curchunk_idx >= curchunk_len) is immediately true, and curchunk_len-1 wraps to 255 (u8 underflow). drm_dp_msg_data_crc4() reads 255 bytes from chunk[48], then memcpy() writes 255 bytes into msg[], both far out of bounds. 2. chunk[48] overflow: curchunk_len can reach 63 (6-bit field). chunk[] is only 48 bytes. Multi-iteration payload assembly appends 16-byte blocks until curchunk_idx reaches curchunk_len, writing up to 15 bytes past the end of chunk[] into msg[]. 3. msg[256] overflow: each chunk contributes (curchunk_len-1) bytes to msg[]. No check ensures curlen + (curchunk_len-1) stays within msg[256], so the memcpy can spill into adjacent struct fields. All three are reachable from any DP MST device that can forge sideband reply messages on a physical connection. The KMS framework uses two slightly different definitions for the state concept. For a given object (plane, CRTC, encoder, etc., so drm_$OBJECT_state), the state is the entire state of that object. However, at the device level, drm_atomic_state refers to a state update for a limited number of objects. Thus, drm_atomic_state isn't the entire device state, but only the full state of some objects in that device. This has been an endless source of confusion and thus bugs. We can rename the drm_atomic_state structure to drm_atomic_commit to make it less confusing. The hdmi_colorspace enum was defined to represent the colorspace value of the HDMI infoframes. It was later used by some HDMI drivers to express the output format they should be setting up. However, it's always been somewhat redundant with the DRM_COLOR_FORMAT_* defines, and now with the drm_output_color_format enum. Now that we introduced a new drm_output_color_format enum to represent what DRM_COLOR_FORMAT_* bits were representing, we can switch to the new enum. The main difference is that while DRM_COLOR_FORMAT_ was a bitmask, drm_output_color_format is a proper enum. However, the enum was done is such a way than DRM_COLOR_FORMAT_X = BIT(DRM_OUTPUT_COLOR_FORMAT_X) so the transitition is easier. The only thing we need to consider is if the original code meant to use that value as a bitmask, in which case we do need to keep the bit shift, or as a discriminant in which case we don't. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) When multiple bridges are present, EDID detection capability (DRM_BRIDGE_OP_EDID) takes precedence over modes detection (DRM_BRIDGE_OP_MODES). To ensure the above two capabilities are determined by the last bridge in the chain, we handle three cases: Case 1: The later bridge declares only DRM_BRIDGE_OP_MODES - If the previous bridge declares DRM_BRIDGE_OP_EDID, set &drm_bridge_connector.bridge_edid to NULL and set &drm_bridge_connector.bridge_modes to the later bridge. - Ensure modes detection capability of the later bridge will not be ignored. Case 2: The later bridge declares only DRM_BRIDGE_OP_EDID - If the previous bridge declares DRM_BRIDGE_OP_MODES, set &drm_bridge_connector.bridge_modes to NULL and set &drm_bridge_connector.bridge_edid to the later bridge. - Although EDID detection capability has higher priority, this operation is for balance and makes sense. 2026-01-19drm/bridge: refactor HDMI InfoFrame callbacksDmitry Baryshkov1-5/+65
Having only a single set of callbacks, hdmi_clear_infoframe and hdmi_write_infoframe, bridge drivers don't have an easy way to signal to the DRM framework, which InfoFrames are actually supported by the hardware and by the driver and which are not. Also, it makes it extremely easy for HDMI bridge drivers to skip implementing the seemingly required InfoFrames (e.g. HDMI VSI). Last, but not least, those callbacks take a single 'type' parameter, which makes it impossible to implement support for multiple VSIs (which will be required once we start working on HDMI Forum VSI). Split the callbacks into a per-InfoFrame-kind pairs, letting the bridge drivers actually signal supported features. The implementation follows the overall drm_bridge design, where the bridge has a single drm_bridge_funcs implementation and signals, which functions are to be called using the drm_bridge->ops flags. The AVI and HDMI VSI are assumed to be required for a normal HDMI operation (with the drivers getting a drm_warn_once() stub implementation if one is missing). The Audio InfoFrame is handled by the existing DRM_BRIDGE_OP_HDMI_AUDIO, while the SPD and HDR DRM InfoFrames got new drm_bridge_ops values. 2025-12-25drm/bridge: add connector argument to .hpd_notify callbackDmitry Baryshkov1-1/+1
Drivers might need to update DRM connector in the drm_bridge_funcs.hpd_notify callback (e.g. it might be necessary to update EDID before setting ELD). Add corresponding argument to the callback.
