2026-08-20net: usb: cdc_ncm: add Apple MacBook Pro USB product ID 0x1902Mehrdad Afshari1-0/+6
The cdc_devs[] quirk table special-cases the Mac CDC-NCM private interface personality only for USB product ID 0x1905. Some MacBook Pro models (e.g. M1 Max) connected over a USB4/Thunderbolt 3/4 cable to a host whose Thunderbolt controller lacks PCIe tunneling support (no NHI function, USB4-only mode) present themselves with product ID 0x1902 instead, using the same descriptor layout as 0x1905: a Communications control interface with zero endpoints (no interrupt/status endpoint) paired with a CDC Data interface, at interface numbers 0 and 2. Because 0x1902 is unmatched, these devices fall through to the generic cdc_ncm_info driver_info, which sets FLAG_LINK_INTR and therefore requires an interrupt endpoint on the control interface. Apple's private NCM interface never provides one, so cdc_ncm_bind() fails outright: cdc_ncm 2-1:1.0: bind() failure cdc_ncm 2-1:1.2: bind() failure and no network device is created, breaking Ethernet-over-USB4 between the Mac and any USB4 host lacking Thunderbolt PCIe tunneling. Add matching entries for 0x1902 alongside the existing 0x1905 ones, reusing apple_private_interface_info as with the other Mac ID. 2026-08-13net: usb: lg-vl600: fix Ethernet header on fragmented RX packetsXu Rao1-1/+1
The LG VL600 RX path can assemble one device frame from multiple USB RX URBs. In the single-URB case, the input skb passed by usbnet is also the buffer being parsed, so @skb and @buf point to the same skb. When a frame is completed from current_rx_buf, however, @buf points to the assembled skb while @skb still points to the last URB fragment. vl600_rx_fixup() returns @buf to the network stack in that path, but it currently obtains the Ethernet header from @skb. As a result, the source/destination address fixups and the IPv6 ethertype fixup can be applied to the final fragment instead of the assembled skb that is actually delivered. Use @buf for the Ethernet header so the fixups are applied to the packet being parsed and returned. This has likely gone unnoticed because the common single-URB path has @skb == @buf and therefore behaves correctly. 2026-08-06net: usb: ipheth: fix carrier_work UAF on disconnectDoruk Tan Ozturk1-1/+10
ipheth_sndbulk_callback() re-arms the carrier-check work on any non-zero URB status: else schedule_delayed_work(&dev->carrier_work, 0); Nothing ties that to the interface being up, so the work can be armed again after ipheth_close() has already drained it, and stay armed until the netdev whose private area embeds it is freed. On unplug with a TX URB in flight, ipheth_disconnect() drains the work through unregister_netdev() -> ipheth_close() -> cancel_delayed_work_sync() and only then calls ipheth_kill_urbs(). usb_kill_urb() completes the in-flight TX URB with -ENOENT, so ipheth_sndbulk_callback() runs after the drain and re-arms carrier_work. The same completion also re-arms the work if the interface is only brought down while a TX URB is in flight, and ipheth_carrier_check_work() then keeps re-queueing itself once a second. unregister_netdev() does not call ipheth_close() for an already-down interface, so nothing drains it on the later unplug either. In both cases free_netdev() frees the netdev while carrier_work is still pending, and ipheth_carrier_check_work() dereferences freed memory. Tie the work to the interface state instead of chasing the completion: disable it in ipheth_close() and enable it in ipheth_open(), so a schedule_delayed_work() from the URB completion is a no-op whenever the interface is not up. disable_delayed_work_sync() also waits for a running instance, so it fully replaces the cancel_delayed_work_sync() it takes the place of. The work starts out disabled in ipheth_probe() so the enable/disable counts balance from the first open. Reproduced under KASAN on linux-next (next-20260731) with dummy_hcd and raw-gadget standing in for the device, driving the second path above (the interface is already down, so unregister_netdev() does not call ipheth_close()): 15 of 15 unpatched boots report a slab-use-after-free in __run_timers(), freed by ipheth_disconnect() and re-armed from ipheth_sndbulk_callback() via queue_delayed_work_on(). The same trigger on a kernel differing only by this patch reports 0 of 15, and the carrier check still functions across open/close cycles. The reproducer needs an attached USB device that stops draining bulk OUT, plus a link down and unplug, driven as root. It is not a privilege boundary crossing and no exploit primitive was developed. 2026-08-05net: usb: cdc_ether: add quirk for AMI BMC stale link eventsJinhui Guo1-0/+16
On AMD Genoa/Turin platforms the BMC-provided USB-Ethernet gadget (American Megatrends, VID 0x046b PID 0xffb0) intermittently fails to respond to ARP after AC cold boot. usbmon captures a stale NETWORK_CONNECTION(off) immediately followed by NETWORK_CONNECTION(on) on the interrupt endpoint (~130us apart) after enumeration. Because alloc_netdev() leaves __LINK_STATE_NOCARRIER cleared, netif_carrier_ok() returns true when the spurious OFF arrives, so usbnet_cdc_status() cannot recognise it as redundant and schedules EVENT_LINK_CHANGE. __handle_link_change() then calls unlink_urbs(), killing ~60 rx URBs whose payload has already been DMA'd into memory — xHCI trace confirms them completing as -ECONNRESET with non-zero residual length. rx_complete() drops these unconditionally. The following ON restores the carrier and re-submits URBs, but the ARP reply is already lost; the interface looks "up but silent" until ifdown/ifup. Fix this by adding a device-specific quirk with FLAG_LINK_INTR set, which makes usbnet_probe() call netif_carrier_off() after bind. With initial carrier == OFF, usbnet_cdc_status() recognises the spurious OFF as matching the current state and drops it; the subsequent ON is the first real event and brings the link up cleanly without ever tearing down the rx queue. The scheduled link-change kevent is harmless because EVENT_DEV_OPEN is not yet set at probe time. This is applied as a device-specific quirk rather than a change to the shared cdc_info driver_info because some CDC devices never send NETWORK_CONNECTION notifications; forcing carrier off for them would leave the link permanently DOWN. Restricting the change to this VID/PID keeps that class of device untouched. Tested on Genoa and Turin across 100+ AC cold boot cycles; ping first-packet success rate went from intermittent to 100%. 2026-08-04usbnet: cap max_mtu for drivers without bind callbackLaurent Vivier1-1/+2
usbnet_probe() initializes max_mtu to ETH_MAX_MTU and only caps it inside the if (info->bind) block. Drivers without a bind callback never enter this block, so max_mtu stays at ETH_MAX_MTU. QEMU's usb-net device (0x0525/0xa4a2) is claimed by the cdc_subset driver which has no bind callback. The guest accepts any MTU from DHCP (e.g. 65520 from passt), leading to TCP segments that exceed the device's 2048-byte receive buffer and are silently dropped. Initialize max_mtu to net->mtu at probe time and update it inside the bind block. 2026-08-03net: usb: ax88179_178a: fix skb leak in ax88179_tx_fixup()Yi Cong1-1/+3
When the interface has NETIF_F_SG enabled and skb_linearize() fails in ax88179_tx_fixup(), the function returns NULL without freeing the skb. usbnet_start_xmit() treats a NULL return from tx_fixup() as a drop (info->flags does not set FLAG_MULTI_PACKET for this driver), jumping to the "drop" label where it does `if (skb) dev_kfree_skb_any(skb)`. Because tx_fixup() returned NULL, the local skb variable in usbnet_start_xmit() is NULL, so the original skb is never freed — a memory leak on every TX frame whose linearization fails (i.e. under memory pressure). Free the skb before returning, matching the error handling already used for the pskb_expand_head() failure path in the same function. The current code is broken when dynamic ID is involved; in such cases usb_device_id parameter of probe lives on the heap and the pointer arithmetic will get an index that is wildly out of bound. Instead of keeping a side table for additional information, use driver_info field of the usb_device_id. The dynamic ID parsing code needs to be updated for this; convert it to just write to the reserved entry for dynamic ID and remove the weird loop. 2026-07-07net: usb: lan78xx: disable VLAN filter in promiscuous modeEnrico Pozzobon1-4/+14
The hardware VLAN filter (RFE_CTL_VLAN_FILTER_) drops VLAN-tagged frames whose VID has not been registered via lan78xx_vlan_rx_add_vid(). It is left enabled in promiscuous mode, so packet capture (e.g. tcpdump or Wireshark) does not see tagged frames for unregistered VIDs. Clear the filter while the interface is promiscuous and restore it from NETIF_F_HW_VLAN_CTAG_FILTER otherwise. Enforce the same condition in lan78xx_set_features() so netdev_update_features() cannot re-enable the filter while promiscuous. For an even packet_len, net1080_rx_fixup() reads the pad byte at skb->data[packet_len] before the skb->len != packet_len check further down, and packet_len is only bounded against NC_MAX_PACKET. set_carrier() ignores the result of the USB control transfer and tests the stack variable supplied as its receive buffer. If the device rejects or aborts the request, that variable remains uninitialized and the driver chooses an arbitrary carrier state. Leave the existing carrier state unchanged when the link status cannot be read. A transient USB error should not be treated as link loss. genelink_rx_fixup() splits an aggregated RX frame into its individual packets, using a per-packet length taken from device-supplied data. That length is only bounded by GL_MAX_PACKET_LEN (1514); it is never compared against how many bytes were actually received. A malicious GeneLink (GL620A) device can therefore send a short URB whose header claims packet_count > 1 and a first packet of up to 1514 bytes. skb_put_data(gl_skb, packet->packet_data, size); then copies past the end of the receive buffer and hands the adjacent slab contents up the network stack, an out-of-bounds read that leaks kernel heap. No privilege is required: the path runs in the usbnet RX softirq as soon as the interface is up. kalmia_rx_fixup() computes usb_packet_length = skb->len - (2 * KALMIA_HEADER_LENGTH) as a u16, guarded only by a pre-loop check that skb->len is at least KALMIA_HEADER_LENGTH, which is 6. A device can deliver a short bulk-IN frame with skb->len in the 6 to 11 range, or leave a short trailing remainder on a later loop iteration. Either case underflows usb_packet_length to about 65530. That bypasses the usb_packet_length < ether_packet_length truncation path. The device-supplied ether_packet_length, a le16 up to 65535 read from header_start[2], then drives a memcmp() and the following skb_trim() and skb_pull() past the end of the rx buffer. The rx buffer is hard_mtu * 10, which is 14000 bytes. That is an out of bounds read. Require both the start and end framing headers to be present before subtracting them, on every loop iteration. Configured VLANs intermittently stop receiving traffic after a link down/up cycle, e.g. when the network cable is unplugged and plugged back in. VLAN filtering stays enabled but all VLAN-tagged frames are dropped until a VLAN is added or removed again. The LAN7801 datasheet (DS00002123E) states: "A portion of the MAC operates on clocks generated by the Ethernet PHY. During a PHY reset event, this portion of the MAC is designed to not be taken out of reset until the PHY clocks are operational" (section 8.10, MAC Reset Watchdog Timer) "After a reset event, the RFE will automatically initialize the contents of the VHF to 0h." (section 7.1.4, VHF Organization) Thus a link down/up cycle stops and restarts the PHY clock, resets the PHY-clocked portion of the MAC, and the RFE clears its VLAN/DA hash filter (VHF) memory. The VHF holds both the VLAN filter table and the multicast hash table, but the driver never reprograms either from its shadow copy once the link is back, so both stay empty. Reprogram the VLAN filter and multicast hash tables on link up. 2026-05-06r8152: Add firmware upload capability for RTL8157/RTL8159Birger Koblitz1-1/+14
The RTL8159 (RTL_VER_17) requires firmware for its PHY in order to work at connection speeds > 5GBit. Add support for uploading firmware for the PHY using the existing rtl8152_apply_firmware() function in r8157_hw_phy_cfg() and set up the correct names for the firmware files. This also adds support for uploading firmware for the RTL8157 (RTL_VER_16) PHY, for which firmware is however not strictly necessary to work. Still, this allows to upload newer versions of the firmware used by this chip, e.g. to improve interoperability. If no firmware is found, both the RTL8157 and the RTL8159 will continue to work. The RTL8159 re-uses the packet descriptor format introduced with the RTL8157 and other hardware features of the RTL8157 (RTL_VER_16) such as the SRAM access. The support therefore consists in expanding the existing RTL8157 code for initialization and USB power management to also be used for the RTL8159 (RTL_VER_17). Most of the additional code is added in r8157_hw_phy_cfg() to configure the RTL8159 PHY. Add support for the USB device ID of Realtek RTL8159-based adapters, for which the product ID is 0x815a. Detect the RTL8159 as RTL_VER_17 and set it up. 2026-05-04net: usb: asix: ax88772: re-add usbnet_link_change() in phylink callbacksMarkus Baier1-0/+2
Commit e0bffe3e6894 ("net: asix: ax88772: migrate to phylink") replaced the asix_adjust_link() PHY callback with phylink's mac_link_up() and mac_link_down() handlers, but did not carry over the usbnet_link_change() notification that commit 805206e66fab ("net: asix: fix "can't send until first packet is send" issue") had added. As a result, the original symptom returns: when the link comes up, usbnet is never notified, so the RX URB submission stays dormant until some other event (e.g. a transmitted packet triggering the status endpoint interrupt) wakes it up. This is reproducible with the Apple A1277 USB Ethernet Adapter (05ac:1402, AX88772A based) on a Banana Pro using a static IPv4 configuration. After bringing the interface up, no incoming packets are received until the first outgoing frame triggers usbnet's RX path. Restore the link change notification, gated on a carrier transition so the call remains idempotent if the status endpoint also reports the change later. 2026-05-01net: usb: cdc_ncm: add Apple Mac USB-C direct networking quirkAlex Cheema1-0/+8
Apple Silicon Macs expose two CDC NCM "private" data interfaces over USB-C with VID:PID 0x05ac:0x1905 and product string "Mac". This is the same protocol Apple already ships on iPhone (0x05ac:0x12a8) and iPad (0x05ac:0x12ab) for RemoteXPC since iOS 17 -- both data interfaces lack an interrupt status endpoint, so they rely on the FLAG_LINK_INTR- conditional bind path introduced in commit 3ec8d7572a69 ("CDC-NCM: add support for Apple's private interface"). The id_table currently has entries for iPhone and iPad but not for the Mac. Without a match, cdc_ncm falls through to the generic CDC NCM class-match entry, which uses the FLAG_LINK_INTR-having cdc_ncm_info struct, so bind_common() fails on the missing status endpoint and no netdev appears. Add id_table entries for both interface numbers (0 and 2) of the Mac, bound to the existing apple_private_interface_info driver_info. Verified empirically on a Mac Studio M3 Ultra running macOS 26.5: when a Mac is connected via USB-C, ioreg shows VID 0x05ac, PID 0x1905, product string "Mac", with two NCM data interfaces at numbers 0 and 2. The same PID is presented by all current Apple Silicon Mac models (MacBook Pro/Air, Mac mini, Mac Studio across the M-series), mirroring Apple's single-PID-per-family pattern from iPhone/iPad. After this patch, plugging a Mac into a Linux host running the patched kernel produces two enx... interfaces (one per data interface), "ip -br link" lists them as UP, and standard userspace networking (DHCP, NetworkManager shared mode, etc.) works without any modprobe overrides or out-of-tree modules. When rtl8150_start_xmit() fails to submit the tx URB, the URB is never handed to the USB core and write_bulk_callback() will not run. The driver returns NETDEV_TX_OK, which tells the networking stack that the skb has been consumed, but nothing actually frees the skb on this error path: dev->tx_skb = skb; ... if ((res = usb_submit_urb(dev->tx_urb, GFP_ATOMIC))) { ... /* no kfree_skb here */ } return NETDEV_TX_OK; This leaks the skb on every submit failure and also leaves dev->tx_skb pointing at memory that the driver itself may later free, which is fragile. Free the skb with dev_kfree_skb_any() in the error path and clear dev->tx_skb so no stale pointer is left behind. The URB may complete on another CPU in softirq context before usb_submit_urb() returns in the submitter, so by the time the submitter reads skb->len the skb has already been queued to the per-CPU completion_queue and freed by net_tx_action(): CPU A (xmit) CPU B (USB completion softirq) ------------ ------------------------------ dev->tx_skb = skb; usb_submit_urb() --+ |-------> write_bulk_callback() | dev_kfree_skb_irq(dev->tx_skb) | net_tx_action() | napi_skb_cache_put() <-- free netdev->stats.tx_bytes | += skb->len; <-- UAF read Fix it by caching skb->len before submitting the URB and using the cached value when updating the tx_bytes counter. The pre-existing tx_bytes semantics are preserved: the counter tracks the original frame length (skb->len), not the ETH_ZLEN/USB-alignment padded "count" value that is handed to the device. Changing that would be a user-visible accounting change and is out of scope for this UAF fix. 2026-04-14net: usb: cdc-phonet: fix skb frags[] overflow in rx_complete()Greg Kroah-Hartman1-1/+6
A malicious USB device claiming to be a CDC Phonet modem can overflow the skb_shared_info->frags[] array by sending an unbounded sequence of full-page bulk transfers. Drop the skb and increment the length error when the frag limit is reached. 2026-04-09r8152: Add support for the RTL8157 hardwareBirger Koblitz1-181/+726
The RTL8157 uses a different packet descriptor format compared to the previous generation of chips. Add support for this format by adding a descriptor format structure into the r8152 structure and corresponding desc_ops functions which abstract the vlan-tag, tx/rx len and tx/rx checksum algorithms. Also, add support for the ADV indirect access interface of the RTL8157 and PHY setup. For initialization of the RTL8157, combine the existing RTL8156B and RTL8156 init functions and add RTL8157-specific functinality in order to improve code readability and maintainability. r8156_init() is now called with RTL_VER_10 and RTL_VER_11 for the RTL8156, with RTL_VER_12, RTL_VER_13 and RTL_VER_15 for the RTL8156B and with RTL_VER_16 for the RTL8157 and checks the version for chip-specific code. Also add USB power control functions for the RTL8157. Add support for the USB device ID of Realtek RTL8157-based adapters. Detect the RTL8157 as RTL_VER_16 and set it up.
