2026-08-14usb: typec: thunderbolt: Disable work before freeing tbt on removeFan Wu1-0/+2
tbt_altmode_remove() drops the plug and cable references without draining tbt->work. The work function dereferences those references, and can also requeue itself in its error path. The VDM callbacks can queue the same work item. Disable and drain tbt->work before dropping the references. This waits for an existing invocation and prevents subsequent schedule_work() calls from queueing it during teardown. This issue was found by an in-house static analysis tool and confirmed by manual code review. 2026-07-08usb: typec: displayport: Reject DP Alt Mode VDO with no pin assignment for its capabilityMadhu M1-0/+13
Some docks/Type-C dongles expose a malformed DP Capabilities VDO: they claim a DFP_D (source) or UFP_D (sink) capability but leave the corresponding pin assignment field empty. Such a device can never have Alt Mode configured. Currently the driver still proceeds, which is misleading and offers no diagnostic. Per VESA DPAM v2.1a Section 5.4.1 (Table 5-6): Case 1 (receptacle): A DP Source device receptacle (DFP_D) declares its lane routing in the DP Source Pin field (Bits 15:8); a DP Sink device receptacle (UFP_D) declares its lanes in the DP Sink Pin field (Bits 23:16). Case 2 (direct-attach plug): A DP Sink device plug (UFP_D) declares its lane routing in the DP Source Pin field (Bits 15:8), and a DP Source device plug (DFP_D) declares its lanes in the DP Sink Pin field (Bits 23:16). In either case the field holds the supported pin assignment values (e.g. C/D/E); 00000000b means no pin assignment is supported for that capability. Reject such a DP Alt Mode VDO in dp_altmode_probe(): if the claimed capability has no matching pin assignments, fail probe with -ENODEV, releasing the SOP' plug reference on the error path. 2026-03-30usb: typec: thunderbolt: Set enter_vdo during initializationAndrei Kuchynski1-22/+22
In the current implementation, if a cable's alternate mode enter operation is not supported, the tbt->plug[TYPEC_PLUG_SOP_P] pointer is cleared by the time tbt_enter_mode() is called. This prevents the driver from identifying the cable's VDO. As a result, the Thunderbolt connection falls back to the default TBT_CABLE_USB3_PASSIVE speed, even if the cable supports higher speeds. To ensure the correct VDO value is used during mode entry, calculate and store the enter_vdo earlier during the initialization phase in tbt_ready(). 2026-03-11usb: typec: altmode/displayport: set displayport signaling rate in configure messageRD Babiera1-1/+6
dp_altmode_configure sets the signaling rate to the current configuration's rate and then shifts the value to the Select Configuration bitfield. On the initial configuration, dp->data.conf is 0 to begin with, so the signaling rate field is never set, which leads to some DisplayPort Alt Mode partners sending NAK to the Configure message. Set the signaling rate to the capabilities supported by both the port and the port partner. If the cable supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, then include its capabilities as well. The port driver sets this bit for an alternate mode description to indicate support for the mode selection feature. The deadlock can occur due to a recursive lock acquisition of `cros_typec_altmode_data::mutex`. The call chain is as follows: 1. cros_typec_altmode_work() acquires the mutex 2. typec_altmode_vdm() -> dp_altmode_vdm() -> 3. typec_altmode_exit() -> cros_typec_altmode_exit() 4. cros_typec_altmode_exit() attempts to acquire the mutex again To prevent this, defer the `typec_altmode_exit()` call by scheduling it rather than calling it directly from within the mutex-protected context. Although some Type-C DRD devices that do not support the DP Sink function (such as Huawei Mate 40Pro), the Source Port initiates Enter Mode CMD, but the device responds to Enter Mode ACK, the Source port then initiates DP Status Update CMD, and the device responds to DP Status Update NAK. As PD2.0 spec ("6.4.4.3.4 Enter Mode Command"),A DR_Swap Message Shall Not be sent during Modal Operation between the Port Partners. At this time, the source port initiates DR_Swap message through the "echo device > /sys/class/typec/port0/data_role" command to switch the data role from host to device. The device will initiate a Hard Reset for recovery, resulting in the failure of data role swap. 2024-01-27usb: typec: altmodes/displayport: add SOP' supportRD Babiera1-4/+158
Implement active cable VDM support for SOP' according to the DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 specification. When probing the DisplayPort driver, the state machine will transition to Enter Mode on SOP' if an active cable altmode is detected. The SVDM flow is as followed: (1) Enter Mode SOP' (2) Enter Mode SOP (3) Status Update SOP (4) Configure SOP' (5) Configure SOP Status Update on SOP' after Enter Mode is optional and not implemented for now. When exiting the alt mode, send Exit Mode over SOP' after SOP. Should an altmode vdm fail on SOP', the DisplayPort driver will drop its reference to the plug and attempt to continue in SOP operation. Add new dp_state enums DP_STATE_ENTER_PRIME, DP_STATE_CONFIGURE_PRIME, and DP_STATE_EXIT_PRIME. dp_altmode adds typec_displayport_data for the cable plug to store the plug configuration and adds a typec_altmode reference for the cable plug. dp_altmode_configure takes the cable pin assignment capabilities into account when deciding on pin configuration. dp_altmode_configure_vdm_cable sends the configure message on SOP'. dp_altmode_activate now attempts to enter on SOP' if applicable, and will attempt to enter on SOP on failure. dp_cable_altmode_vdm handles VDMs passed to the DisplayPort driver from the tcpm. In some implementations, such as the Qualcomm platforms, the display driver has no way to query the current HPD state and as such it's impossible to distinguish between disconnect and attention events. Add a parameter to drm_connector_oob_hotplug_event() to pass the HPD state. Also push the test for unchanged state in the displayport altmode driver into the i915 driver, to allow other drivers to act upon each update. 2023-10-11usb: typec: altmodes/displayport: Signal hpd low when exiting modeRD Babiera1-0/+5
Upon receiving an ACK for a sent EXIT_MODE message, the DisplayPort driver currently resets the status and configuration of the port partner. The hpd signal is not updated despite being part of the status, so the Display stack can still transmit video despite typec_altmode_exit placing the lanes in a Safe State. 2023-08-04usb: typec: altmodes/displayport: Signal hpd when configuring pin assignmentRD Babiera1-1/+17
When connecting to some DisplayPort partners, the initial status update after entering DisplayPort Alt Mode notifies that the DFP_D/UFP_D is not in the connected state. This leads to sending a configure message that keeps the device in USB mode. The port partner then sets DFP_D/UFP_D to the connected state and HPD to high in the same Attention message. Currently, the HPD signal is dropped in order to handle configuration. This patch saves changes to the HPD signal when the device chooses to configure during dp_altmode_status_update, and invokes sysfs_notify if necessary for HPD after configuring. While determining the initial pin assignment to be sent in the configure message, using the DP_PIN_ASSIGN_DP_ONLY_MASK mask causes the DFP_U to send both Pin Assignment C and E when both are supported by the DFP_U and UFP_U. The spec (Table 5-7 DFP_U Pin Assignment Selection Mandates, VESA DisplayPort Alt Mode Standard v2.0) indicates that the DFP_U never selects Pin Assignment E when Pin Assignment C is offered. While checking Pin Assignments of the port and partner during probe, we don't take into account whether the peripheral is a plug or receptacle. This manifests itself in a mode entry failure on certain docks and dongles with captive cables. For instance, the Startech.com Type-C to DP dongle (Model #CDP2DP) advertises its DP VDO as 0x405. This would fail the Pin Assignment compatibility check, despite it supporting Pin Assignment C as a UFP. Update the check to use the correct DP Pin Assign macros that take the peripheral's receptacle bit into account. Exporsing HotPlugDetect(HPD) helps userspace to infer HPD state as defined by VESA DisplayPort Alt Mode on USB Type-C Standard. This allows userspace to notify users for self help, for instance, to hint user that the display port cable is probably detached (or) the display port sink (viz., monitors ect.,) is un-powered. Also helps to debug issues reported from field. This change adds an additional attribute "hpd" to the existing "displayport" attributes. VESA DisplayPort Alt Mode on USB Type-C Standard defines how HotPlugDetect(HPD) shall be supported on the USB-C connector when operating in DisplayPort Alt Mode. This is a read only node which reflects the current state of HPD. 2022-08-18usb: typec: altmodes/displayport: correct pin assignment for UFP receptaclesPablo Sun1-2/+2
Fix incorrect pin assignment values when connecting to a monitor with Type-C receptacle instead of a plug. According to specification, an UFP_D receptacle's pin assignment should came from the UFP_D pin assignments field (bit 23:16), while an UFP_D plug's assignments are described in the DFP_D pin assignments (bit 15:8) during Mode Discovery. For example the LG 27 UL850-W is a monitor with Type-C receptacle. The monitor responds to MODE DISCOVERY command with following DisplayPort Capability flag: dp->alt->vdo=0x140045 The existing logic only take cares of UPF_D plug case, and would take the bit 15:8 for this 0x140045 case. This results in an non-existing pin assignment 0x0 in dp_altmode_configure. To fix this problem a new set of macros are introduced to take plug/receptacle differences into consideration.
