2026-09-04treewide: refresh kmalloc_obj() conversionsKees Cook1-1/+1
This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc() family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's "--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control flow indicator I could find. Build tested allmodconfig on x86, arm64, arm, loongarch, mips, powerpc, riscv, and s390 with no new warnings. 2026-05-25ALSA: pcm: oss: Fix setup list UAF on proc write errorCássio Gabriel1-7/+11
snd_pcm_oss_proc_write() links a newly allocated setup entry into the OSS setup list before duplicating the task name. If the task-name allocation fails, the error path frees the already linked entry and leaves setup_list pointing at freed memory. A later OSS device open can then walk the stale list entry in snd_pcm_oss_look_for_setup() and dereference freed memory. Allocate the task name and initialize the setup entry before publishing the entry on setup_list. Also fetch the initial proc read iterator only after taking setup_mutex, so all setup_list traversal follows the same list lifetime rules. 2026-04-27ALSA: pcm: oss: Fix data race at accessing runtime.oss.triggerTakashi Iwai1-6/+23
Currently the runtime.oss.trigger field may be accessed concurrently without protection, which may lead to the data race. And, in this case, it may lead to more severe problem because it's a bit field; as writing the data, it may overwrite other bit fields as well, which confuses the operation completely, as spotted by fuzzing. Fix it by covering runtime.oss.trigger bit fled also with the existing params_lock mutex in both snd_pcm_oss_get_trigger() and snd_pcm_oss_poll(). Reported-and-tested-by: Jaeyoung Chung <jjy600901@snu.ac.kr> Closes: https://lore.kernel.org/20260423145330.210035-1-jjy600901@snu.ac.kr Cc: <stable@vger.kernel.org> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260424112205.123703-1-tiwai@suse.de Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
2026-03-16ALSA: pcm: oss: use proper stream lock for runtime->state accessCen Zhang1-19/+25
__snd_pcm_set_state() writes runtime->state under the PCM stream lock. However, the OSS I/O functions snd_pcm_oss_write3(), snd_pcm_oss_read3(), snd_pcm_oss_writev3() and snd_pcm_oss_readv3() read runtime->state without holding the stream lock, only holding oss.params_lock (a different mutex that does not synchronize with the stream lock). Since __snd_pcm_set_state() is called from IRQ context (e.g., snd_pcm_period_elapsed -> snd_pcm_update_state -> __snd_pcm_xrun -> snd_pcm_stop -> snd_pcm_post_stop) while the OSS read/write paths run in process context, these are concurrent accesses that constitute a data race. Rather than using READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() barriers, introduce a snd_pcm_get_state() helper that reads runtime->state under the stream lock, matching the locking discipline used elsewhere in the PCM layer. Also export snd_pcm_set_state() for completeness. Use snd_pcm_get_state() in all four OSS I/O functions, caching the result in a local variable where the same snapshot is used for multiple comparisons to avoid taking the lock repeatedly. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds1-2/+1
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds2-25/+25
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook3-26/+27
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2025-12-17ALSA: oss: Relax __free() variable declarationsTakashi Iwai2-38/+45
We used to have a variable declaration with __free() initialized with NULL. This was to keep the old coding style rule, but recently it's relaxed and rather recommends to follow the new rule to declare in place of use for __free() -- which avoids potential deadlocks or UAFs with nested cleanups. Although the current code has no bug, per se, let's follow the new standard and move the declaration to the place of assignment (or directly assign the allocated result) instead of NULL initializations. 2025-05-16ALSA: pcm: Fix race of buffer access at PCM OSS layerTakashi Iwai1-2/+1
The PCM OSS layer tries to clear the buffer with the silence data at initialization (or reconfiguration) of a stream with the explicit call of snd_pcm_format_set_silence() with runtime->dma_area. But this may lead to a UAF because the accessed runtime->dma_area might be freed concurrently, as it's performed outside the PCM ops. For avoiding it, move the code into the PCM core and perform it inside the buffer access lock, so that it won't be changed during the operation. 2024-08-09ALSA: control: Optimize locking for look-upTakashi Iwai1-5/+5
For a fast look-up of a control element via either numid or name matching (enabled via CONFIG_SND_CTL_FAST_LOOKUP), a locking isn't needed at all thanks to Xarray. OTOH, the locking is still needed for a slow linked-list traversal, and that's rather a rare case. In this patch, we reduce the use of locking at snd_ctl_find_*() API functions, and switch from controls_rwsem to controls_rwlock for avoiding unnecessary lock inversions. This also resulted in a nice cleanup, as *_unlocked() version of snd_ctl_find_*() APIs can be dropped. snd_ctl_find_id_mixer_unlocked() is still left just as an alias of snd_ctl_find_id_mixer(), since soc-card.c has a wrapper and there are several users. 2023-07-20ALSA: control: Introduce unlocked version for snd_ctl_find_*() helpersTakashi Iwai1-5/+5
For reducing the unnecessary use of controls_rwsem in the drivers, this patch adds a new variant for snd_ctl_find_*() helpers: snd_ctl_find_id_locked() and snd_ctl_find_numid_locked() look for a kctl element inside the card->controls_rwsem -- that is, doing the very same as what snd_ctl_find_id() and snd_ctl_find_numid() did until now. snd_ctl_find_id() and snd_ctl_find_numid() remain same, i.e. still unlocked version, but they will be switched to locked version once after all callers are replaced. The patch also replaces the calls of snd_ctl_find_id() and snd_ctl_find_numid() in a few places; all of those are places where we know that the functions are called properly with controls_rwsem held. All others are without rwsem (although they should have been). After this patch, we'll turn on the locking in snd_ctl_find_id() and snd_ctl_find_numid() to be more race-free. 2022-09-27ALSA: pcm: Avoid reference to status->stateTakashi Iwai1-21/+21
In the PCM core and driver code, there are lots place referring to the current PCM state via runtime->status->state. This patch introduced a local PCM state in runtime itself and replaces those references with runtime->state. It has improvements in two aspects: - The reduction of a indirect access leads to more code optimization - It avoids a possible (unexpected) modification of the state via mmap of the status record The status->state is updated together with runtime->state, so that user-space can still read the current state via mmap like before, too. This patch touches only the ALSA core code. The changes in each driver will follow in later patches. 2022-09-05ALSA: pcm: oss: Fix race at SNDCTL_DSP_SYNCTakashi Iwai1-3/+3
There is a small race window at snd_pcm_oss_sync() that is called from OSS PCM SNDCTL_DSP_SYNC ioctl; namely the function calls snd_pcm_oss_make_ready() at first, then takes the params_lock mutex for the rest. When the stream is set up again by another thread between them, it leads to inconsistency, and may result in unexpected results such as NULL dereference of OSS buffer as a fuzzer spotted recently. The fix is simply to cover snd_pcm_oss_make_ready() call into the same params_lock mutex with snd_pcm_oss_make_ready_locked() variant. 2022-03-18ALSA: oss: Release temporary buffers upon errorsTakashi Iwai1-13/+15
When the parameter changes fails, we don't need to keep the old temporary buffers. Release those (and plugin instances) upon errors for reducing dead memory footprint. Since we always call it at the exit of snd_pcm_oss_changes_params_locked(), the explicit calls of snd_pcm_oss_plugin_clear() can be dropped, too. Along with it, unify the buffer-free calls to a single helper and call it from the needed places. 2022-03-18ALSA: oss: Fix PCM OSS buffer allocation overflowTakashi Iwai2-5/+12
We've got syzbot reports hitting INT_MAX overflow at vmalloc() allocation that is called from snd_pcm_plug_alloc(). Although we apply the restrictions to input parameters, it's based only on the hw_params of the underlying PCM device. Since the PCM OSS layer allocates a temporary buffer for the data conversion, the size may become unexpectedly large when more channels or higher rates is given; in the reported case, it went over INT_MAX, hence it hits WARN_ON(). This patch is an attempt to avoid such an overflow and an allocation for too large buffers. First off, it adds the limit of 1MB as the upper bound for period bytes. This must be large enough for all use cases, and we really don't want to handle a larger temporary buffer than this size. The size check is performed at two places, where the original period bytes is calculated and where the plugin buffer size is calculated. In addition, the driver uses array_size() and array3_size() for multiplications to catch overflows for the converted period size and buffer bytes. 2021-12-02ALSA: pcm: oss: Limit the period size to 16MBTakashi Iwai1-1/+1
Set the practical limit to the period size (the fragment shift in OSS) instead of a full 31bit; a too large value could lead to the exhaust of memory as we allocate temporary buffers of the period size, too. As of this patch, we set to 16MB limit, which should cover all use cases.
