2018-03-16arch: remove tile portArnd Bergmann1-287/+0
The Tile architecture port was added by Chris Metcalf in 2010, and maintained until early 2018 when he orphaned it due to his departure from Mellanox, and nobody else stepped up to maintain it. The product line is still around in the form of the BlueField SoC, but no longer uses the Tile architecture. There are also still products for sale with Tile-GX SoCs, notably the Mikrotik CCR router family. The products all use old (linux-3.3) kernels with lots of patches and won't be upgraded by their manufacturers. There have been efforts to port both OpenWRT and Debian to these, but both projects have stalled and are very unlikely to be continued in the future. Given that we are reasonably sure that nobody is still using the port with an upstream kernel any more, it seems better to remove it now while the port is in a good shape than to let it bitrot for a few years first. 2016-12-16tile: use __ro_after_init instead of tile-specific __write_onceChris Metcalf1-1/+1
The semantics of the old tile __write_once are the same as the newer generic __ro_after_init, so rename them all and get rid of the tile-specific version. This does not enable actual support for __ro_after_init, which had been dropped from the tile architecture before the initial upstreaming was done, since we had at that time switched to using 16MB huge pages to map the kernel. Tile includes a hypervisor hook to deliver messages to arbitrary tiles, so we can use that to raise an interrupt as soon as possible on our own core. Unfortunately the Tilera hypervisor disabled that support on principle in previous releases, but it will be available in MDE 4.3.4 and later. Pull percpu consistent-ops changes from Tejun Heo: "Way back, before the current percpu allocator was implemented, static and dynamic percpu memory areas were allocated and handled separately and had their own accessors. The distinction has been gone for many years now; however, the now duplicate two sets of accessors remained with the pointer based ones - this_cpu_*() - evolving various other operations over time. During the process, we also accumulated other inconsistent operations. This pull request contains Christoph's patches to clean up the duplicate accessor situation. __get_cpu_var() uses are replaced with with this_cpu_ptr() and __this_cpu_ptr() with raw_cpu_ptr(). Unfortunately, the former sometimes is tricky thanks to C being a bit messy with the distinction between lvalues and pointers, which led to a rather ugly solution for cpumask_var_t involving the introduction of this_cpu_cpumask_var_ptr(). This converts most of the uses but not all. 2014-08-26tile: Replace __get_cpu_var usesChristoph Lameter1-1/+1
__get_cpu_var() is used for multiple purposes in the kernel source. One of them is address calculation via the form &__get_cpu_var(x). This calculates the address for the instance of the percpu variable of the current processor based on an offset. Other use cases are for storing and retrieving data from the current processors percpu area. __get_cpu_var() can be used as an lvalue when writing data or on the right side of an assignment. __get_cpu_var() is defined as : #define __get_cpu_var(var) (*this_cpu_ptr(&(var))) __get_cpu_var() always only does an address determination. However, store and retrieve operations could use a segment prefix (or global register on other platforms) to avoid the address calculation. this_cpu_write() and this_cpu_read() can directly take an offset into a percpu area and use optimized assembly code to read and write per cpu variables. This patch converts __get_cpu_var into either an explicit address calculation using this_cpu_ptr() or into a use of this_cpu operations that use the offset. Thereby address calculations are avoided and less registers are used when code is generated. At the end of the patch set all uses of __get_cpu_var have been removed so the macro is removed too. The patch set includes passes over all arches as well. Once these operations are used throughout then specialized macros can be defined in non -x86 arches as well in order to optimize per cpu access by f.e. using a global register that may be set to the per cpu base. Transformations done to __get_cpu_var() 1. Determine the address of the percpu instance of the current processor. 2013-09-03tile: make __write_once a synonym for __read_mostlyChris Metcalf1-1/+5
This was really only useful for TILE64 when we mapped the kernel data with small pages. Now we use a huge page and we really don't want to map different parts of the kernel data in different ways. We retain the __write_once name in case we want to bring it back to life at some point in the future. Note that this change uncovered a latent bug where the "smp_topology" variable happened to always be aligned mod 8 so we could store two "int" values at once, but when we eliminated __write_once it ended up only aligned mod 4. In addition to the core support, this change includes a number of places where we fix up uses of smp_processor_id() and per-cpu variables. 2012-05-25arch/tile: Allow tilegx to build with either 16K or 64K page sizeChris Metcalf1-1/+1
This change introduces new flags for the hv_install_context() API that passes a page table pointer to the hypervisor. Clients can explicitly request 4K, 16K, or 64K small pages when they install a new context. In practice, the page size is fixed at kernel compile time and the same size is always requested every time a new page table is installed. The <hv/hypervisor.h> header changes so that it provides more abstract macros for managing "page" things like PFNs and page tables. For example there is now a HV_DEFAULT_PAGE_SIZE_SMALL instead of the old HV_PAGE_SIZE_SMALL. The various PFN routines have been eliminated and only PA- or PTFN-based ones remain (since PTFNs are always expressed in fixed 2KB "page" size). The page-table management macros are renamed with a leading underscore and take page-size arguments with the presumption that clients will use those macros in some single place to provide the "real" macros they will use themselves. I happened to notice the old hv_set_caching() API was totally broken (it assumed 4KB pages) so I changed it so it would nominally work correctly with other page sizes. 2012-03-28smp: introduce a generic on_each_cpu_mask() functionGilad Ben-Yossef1-19/+0
We have lots of infrastructure in place to partition multi-core systems such that we have a group of CPUs that are dedicated to specific task: cgroups, scheduler and interrupt affinity, and cpuisol= boot parameter. Still, kernel code will at times interrupt all CPUs in the system via IPIs for various needs. These IPIs are useful and cannot be avoided altogether, but in certain cases it is possible to interrupt only specific CPUs that have useful work to do and not the entire system. This patch set, inspired by discussions with Peter Zijlstra and Frederic Weisbecker when testing the nohz task patch set, is a first stab at trying to explore doing this by locating the places where such global IPI calls are being made and turning the global IPI into an IPI for a specific group of CPUs. The purpose of the patch set is to get feedback if this is the right way to go for dealing with this issue and indeed, if the issue is even worth dealing with at all. Based on the feedback from this patch set I plan to offer further patches that address similar issue in other code paths. This patch creates an on_each_cpu_mask() and on_each_cpu_cond() infrastructure API (the former derived from existing arch specific versions in Tile and Arm) and uses them to turn several global IPI invocation to per CPU group invocations. Core kernel: on_each_cpu_mask() calls a function on processors specified by cpumask, which may or may not include the local processor. You must not call this function with disabled interrupts or from a hardware interrupt handler or from a bottom half handler. arch/arm: Note that the generic version is a little different then the Arm one: 1. It has the mask as first parameter 2. It calls the function on the calling CPU with interrupts disabled, but this should be OK since the function is called on the other CPUs with interrupts disabled anyway. arch/tile: The API is the same as the tile private one, but the generic version also calls the function on the with interrupts disabled in UP case This is OK since the function is called on the other CPUs with interrupts disabled. 2011-04-14sched: Provide scheduler_ipi() callback in response to smp_send_reschedule()Peter Zijlstra1-5/+1
For future rework of try_to_wake_up() we'd like to push part of that function onto the CPU the task is actually going to run on. In order to do so we need a generic callback from the existing scheduler IPI. This patch introduces such a generic callback: scheduler_ipi() and implements it as a NOP.
