2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Fix HSM hart status error propagationTan Chi1-2/+2
kvm_sbi_hsm_vcpu_get_status() returns SBI_ERR_INVALID_PARAM when the requested hart does not exist. However, the HART_STATUS case returns from the SBI handler without storing this error in retdata->err_val. As a result, a guest querying the status of a non-existent hart observes SBI_SUCCESS instead of SBI_ERR_INVALID_PARAM. Use the common SBI error handling path for HART_STATUS after saving a valid hart state in retdata->out_val. This preserves the returned error when kvm_sbi_hsm_vcpu_get_status() fails. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Fix perf-backed counter accounting across stop and readSeungJu Cheon1-8/+8
pmu_ctr_read() adds the event count returned by perf_event_read_value() to counter_val, which can accumulate the same count repeatedly across reads. kvm_riscv_vcpu_pmu_ctr_stop() also leaves counter_val stale by not folding the current event count into it. Make reads of perf-backed counters side-effect free, and use perf_event_pause() when stopping a counter to fold the current event count into counter_val while resetting it. This preserves the counter value across stop/start and lets the snapshot path use counter_val directly. If kvm_vcpu_write_guest() fails while updating the PMU snapshot area on counter stop, the guest may receive SBI_SUCCESS without the snapshot being updated, leaving stale data in shared memory. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Preserve firmware counter value across stop/startSeungJu Cheon1-6/+6
Firmware events accumulate in kvpmu->fw_event[].value while running, but counter stop only clears fw_event[].started without saving the value back to pmc->counter_val. A subsequent counter start without SBI_PMU_START_FLAG_SET_INIT_VALUE reloads the stale counter_val into fw_event[].value, losing all events counted so far. Save fw_event[].value into counter_val when actually stopping a running counter, and remove the now redundant synchronization from the snapshot path. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Fix sdata leak and stale snapshot_addr in snapshot_set_shmemZongmin Zhou1-0/+8
A guest may call SBI_PMU_SNAPSHOT_SET_SHMEM repeatedly. Each call overwrites kvpmu->sdata without freeing the old buffer (memory leak), and if a later kvm_vcpu_write_guest() fails, the error path frees sdata but leaves snapshot_addr stale. A subsequent SBI_PMU_COUNTER_START then passes the INVALID_GPA check and crashes the host with a NULL buffer in kvm_vcpu_read_guest(). Fix this by clearing the previously installed snapshot area before installing a new one, which keeps sdata and snapshot_addr consistent. The SBI spec suggests a single invocation but defines no error code for repeated calls, so KVM must tolerate them. 2026-09-15KVM: riscv: Fix NACL hfence entry update orderZongmin Zhou1-4/+16
The SBI v3.0 specification (section 15.1.2) requires a nested HFENCE entry to be populated as follows: 1) find an unused entry with Config.Pending == 0 2) update the Page_Number and Page_Count words 3) update the Config word with Config.Pending set __kvm_riscv_nacl_hfence() writes the Config word first, so the SBI implementation (or NACL hardware) can observe a pending entry with pnum/pcount values left over from the previous use of that entry, resulting in incorrect TLB flush ranges. Write pnum and pcount first and the Config word last. Since the consumer is an external agent on coherent shared memory, use WRITE_ONCE() to stop the compiler from reordering the stores and smp_wmb() to make the parameter words globally visible before the Pending bit is set. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Propagate interrupted G-stage faultsXie Bo2-1/+3
__kvm_faultin_pfn() reports an interrupted host page fault with KVM_PFN_ERR_SIGPENDING. RISC-V currently handles it as a generic error PFN and returns -EFAULT. Return -EINTR for the signal-pending sentinel so callers can distinguish an interrupted fault from an invalid userspace mapping. Do not log the expected interruption as a vCPU exit error. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Release unused page after MMU invalidationXie Bo1-2/+6
If an MMU invalidation races with a G-stage fault, the fault handler skips installing the page but leaves ret set to zero. As a result, kvm_release_faultin_page() treats the page as used and can unnecessarily mark it dirty. Track the invalidation retry separately and release the page as unused, while preserving the existing return value so that the vCPU retries the fault. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Serialize IMSIC attributes with vCPU migrationXie Bo1-2/+9
KVM device ioctls are not serialized against KVM_RUN. As a result, kvm_riscv_aia_imsic_rw_attr() can snapshot the physical CPU and HGEI of an IMSIC VS-file before a concurrent vCPU migration releases it. The HGEI can then be allocated to another vCPU before imsic_vsfile_rw() uses the stale tuple. A GET or SET attribute may consequently access the new owner's interrupt file. Serialize the entire IMSIC attribute operation with the target vCPU mutex. This prevents the VS-file from being migrated and recycled until the attribute access completes. Acquire the mutex killably so that the device ioctl remains interruptible while waiting for KVM_RUN to finish. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Fix the conversion between vsip and hvipYicong Yang2-7/+4
Per AIA spec 1.0 Section 6.3.2, the interrupt numbers 13-63 shares same bit position between related VS shadow CSRs and hypervisor CSRs. So there's a shift only for SSI, STI and SEI interrupt. Currently the KVM always does a shift for all the interrupts (include LCOFI with number 13) when doing the conversion between vsip and hvip. Fix this by only doing shift the SSI, STI and SEI. 2026-09-15RISC-V: KVM: Synchronize hrtimer callback during teardownMyeonghun Pak1-1/+4
The non-Sstc hrtimer callback clears next_set before its final uses of the enclosing vCPU. If teardown observes next_set as false while the callback is still running, kvm_riscv_vcpu_timer_cancel() skips hrtimer_cancel() and kvm_destroy_vcpus() can free the vCPU before the callback enters kvm_riscv_vcpu_set_interrupt(). A guest can arm the timer with SBI TIME and request shutdown with SBI legacy shutdown or SRST. A VMM that honors KVM_EXIT_SYSTEM_EVENT and destroys the VM supplies the teardown side of the race; no post-launch host ioctl is needed to arm or request teardown. On upstream master 62cc90241548, generic KASAN reported: BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in do_raw_spin_lock Write of size 4 at addr ff60000005e58898 kvm_riscv_vcpu_set_interrupt kvm_riscv_vcpu_hrtimer_expired __hrtimer_run_queues hrtimer_interrupt The object was allocated by KVM_CREATE_VCPU and freed concurrently by: kvm_destroy_vcpus kvm_arch_destroy_vm kvm_destroy_vm __fput For deterministic validation, I added mdelay(1000) immediately after the existing next_set = false assignment. This only widens the existing post-clear callback window. A no-delay trace build naturally reached the callback-after-teardown-start/before-deinit ordering in 12 of 200 runs, but 1,500 stock-kernel stress iterations did not produce a KASAN report, so natural reproduction is timing-sensitive. Always invoke hrtimer_cancel() for an initialized timer. Preserve the existing -EINVAL result when the timer is no longer set, but only after synchronizing with a running callback. With this patch, hrtimer_cancel() blocked for the full widened callback window before vCPU destruction. KASAN reported no error in 100 fixed-and-widened runs or 200 fix-only timing-sweep runs. This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc() family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's "--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control flow indicator I could find. 2026-08-13RISC-V: KVM: fix vcpu vector context handling for kernel-mode vectorAndy Chiu3-2/+36
Running vector workloads like perf + mcf on KVM can result in an unexpected termination due to a vtype corruption. This happens because the kernel-mode vector (KMV) misattributes the guest's vcpu context as the user's context and source from a wrong status.VS. The simplified call chain that results in this problem is shown as follow: __riscv_sys_ioctl() kvm_arch_vcpu_ioctl_run() kvm_riscv_vcpu_exit() kvm_riscv_vcpu_sbi_ecall() kvm_riscv_vcpu_pmu_ctr_stop() kvm_vcpu_write_guest() __copy_to_user() enter_vector_usercopy() kernel_vector_begin() kernel_vector_begin() should use the sstatus.VS from guest's vcpu context instead of task_pt_reg(current). Also, it should not save guest's v-reg into the user's context memory. To resolve this, the vcpu context must be correctly saved when KMV is serving a guest. However, invoking KVM functions directly from generic RISC-V architecture code introduces a reverse dependency, breaking builds when KVM is configured as N or M. Address this by registering an RCU-protected callback for context flushing. KVM registers this callback at module initialization and unregisters it on exit. When KMV starts a kernel context, it can now safely flush the vector context via the callback. Register a CPU_PM notifier to restore hypervisor CSR content during CPU non-retention idle states. When a CPU enters a deep idle state that powers off the CPU domain, hypervisor CSRs and VS CSRs lose their state and must be saved before entry and restored after exit. This completes KVM's power management coverage for RISC-V: - CPU hotplug: handled by kvm_online_cpu/kvm_offline_cpu (cpuhp callbacks) - System suspend: handled by kvm_suspend/kvm_resume (syscore ops) - CPU idle (retention): no action needed, CSRs are retained - CPU idle (non-retention): handled by this CPU_PM notifier Signed-off-by: Yong-Xuan Wang <yongxuan.wang@sifive.com> Reviewed-by: Anup Patel <anup@brainfault.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20260810-kvm-cpu-pm-v5-1-6c9e4c95caf5@sifive.com Signed-off-by: Anup Patel <anup@brainfault.org>
2026-08-08KVM: RISC-V: Clear former VCPU cache on virtualization disableYong-Xuan Wang2-0/+13
When a CPU is taken offline or enters deep idle states, hypervisor CSR state is lost. The kvm_former_vcpu fast-path optimization caches the last VCPU that ran on each CPU to avoid expensive CSR restoration when the same VCPU is re-scheduled on the same CPU. However, if this cache is not cleared when CSR state is lost, the next VCPU entry will incorrectly skip CSR restoration, leading to corrupt hypervisor state. Add kvm_riscv_clear_former_vcpu() to invalidate the per-CPU cache and call it from kvm_arch_disable_virtualization_cpu() to ensure proper CSR restoration after CPU offline or system suspend events. 2026-08-08RISC-V: KVM: Fix PMU event info array size overflowGuidong Han1-5/+9

2026-08-08RISC-V: KVM: Avoid one-word masks for SBI v0.1 all-hartsPengpeng Hou1-22/+30
KVM already treats a NULL hart-mask pointer in SBI v0.1 calls as all harts, matching OpenSBI's legacy handling. The current handler builds that target set as (1UL << online_vcpus) - 1 before iterating the mask. That expression shifts by the type width once the VM has BITS_PER_LONG online vCPUs, and a single word cannot represent larger VMs. A count-based mask also selects the wrong IDs when vCPU IDs are sparse. Handle SEND_IPI with a NULL hart-mask by iterating all online vCPUs directly. For remote fence calls, use the existing hbase == -1UL convention so the common fence request helper targets the whole VM without consulting hmask. Non-NULL guest hart masks keep the existing v0.1 behavior. 2026-08-08RISC-V: KVM: Guard HFENCE range loops against overflowPengpeng Hou1-12/+59
The local HFENCE range helpers build the loop end with addr + size and then step through the range by the requested page order. If addr + size wraps, a small range near the top of the address space can be treated as empty and skip the intended fence. The final loop step can also wrap before the loop condition is evaluated again. Treat wrapped ranges conservatively as full-range HFENCE requests and stop each bounded loop before the next step can wrap past the computed end. This keeps the existing large-range fallback and only changes local GVMA/VVMA range construction. 2026-08-07RISC-V: KVM: Reject overlapping AIA IMSIC address fieldsPengpeng Hou1-0/+6
KVM lets userspace configure the IMSIC guest, HART, group-width, and group-shift fields independently. The individual bounds allow a layout such as guest_bits=7, hart_bits=6, group_bits=1, and group_shift=24. That layout places the group index bit at bit 24 while the lower guest+HART field also extends through bit 24. The IMSIC address helpers later consume these values as one address layout: aia_imsic_ppn() masks the lower guest+HART field and the group field, while aia_imsic_hart_index() combines the group and HART index. Allowing an overlapping configuration therefore gives one address bit two different meanings. 2026-08-07RISC-V: KVM: Improve dirty log clearing by skipping zero bits in maskWang Yechao2-1/+60
The existing kvm_riscv_gstage_wp_range() walks the entire [start, end) range to apply write protection for dirty log clearing, even when the provided mask has zero bits (i.e., many GFNs do not need protection). This leads to unnecessary page table walks when the mask is sparse. Replace the range-based approach with a new function kvm_riscv_gstage_wp_pt_masked() that iterates only over the set bits in the mask. For each set bit, it looks up the leaf PTE and applies write protection. Once a huge page is encountered, the entire huge-page range is processed in one go, and the corresponding bits in the mask are cleared using bitmap_clear(). Performance was measured with KVM selftests dirty_log_perf_test on a Spacemit k3 host with the following configuration: - vCPUs: 2 (-v 2) - Memory: 1GB (-b 1G) - Iterations: 3 (-i 3) - Write percentage varied via -w parameter to simulate different dirty mask densities. The following data shows the time spent in the clear-dirty-log phase (i.e., the KVM_CLEAR_DIRTY_LOG ioctl) under each configuration. +------------------+------------------+------------------+-------------+ | Write Percentage | Original (s) | Patched (s) | Improvement | +------------------+------------------+------------------+-------------+ | 10% | 0.012905 | 0.009213 | +28.6% | | 30% | 0.014217 | 0.010287 | +27.6% | | 50% | 0.014606 | 0.011772 | +19.4% | | 70% | 0.014735 | 0.013199 | +10.4% | | 100% | 0.014759 | 0.015294 | -3.6% | +------------------+------------------+------------------+-------------+ The performance improvement is most significant when the dirty mask is sparse (low write percentage), which is common in real-world scenarios with low to moderate memory write intensity. In the worst-case scenario where the mask is fully set (100% write), the optimization introduces a slight 3.6% overhead due to the additional bit operations, which is acceptable given the substantial gains in common cases. This change significantly reduces the number of page-table walks when the dirty mask has many zero bits, improving the efficiency of KVM_CLEAR_DIRTY_LOG and related ioctls. 2026-08-01RISC-V: KVM: Separate req and fallback_req masks in make_xfence_requestWang Yechao1-8/+12
When handling hfence requests in make_xfence_request(), the current code uses a single 'actual_req' variable and a single vcpu_mask. If any VCPU fails to enqueue the hfence data (because its queue is full), the request falls back to 'fallback_req' for all VCPUs, even if other VCPUs still have available queue space. This can cause unnecessary fallback for healthy VCPUs, and more seriously, those healthy VCPUs will not process their already-enqueued hfence requests because no 'req' is set for them. As a result, their queues will quickly become full as well, degrading performance for SMP guests. Fix this by maintaining two separate bitmaps: one for VCPUs that successfully enqueued the hfence data (req_vcpu_mask) and another for those that failed (fallback_req_vcpu_mask). Then send the appropriate requests to each group. This ensures that fallback is only applied to VCPUs that actually need it, preserving the efficiency of the normal path for others. The extension Zicfiss/Zicfilp introduces a software-check exception to the privilege architecture. Redirect this exception to VS mode when VCPU enable Zicfiss/Zicfilp so the CFI violations in VU/VS could be reported. Also, update kvm_riscv_vcpu_trap_redirect() to forward the SPELP state to the VS mode. 2026-07-15RISC-V: KVM: Serialize virtual interrupt pending state updatesXie Bo3-29/+82
KVM RISC-V tracks guest local interrupt state with two bitmaps: - irqs_pending: interrupts that should be visible to the guest - irqs_pending_mask: interrupts whose pending state changed The current code updates those bitmaps with independent atomic bitops and assumes a multiple-producer, single-consumer protocol. That model does not actually hold. kvm_riscv_vcpu_sync_interrupts() is not a pure consumer. When the guest changes guest-visible HVIP state, sync_interrupts() writes both irqs_pending and irqs_pending_mask to reflect the new guest state back into KVM state. As a result, irqs_pending and irqs_pending_mask form a single logical state transition, but they are not updated atomically as a pair. This allows a race where a newly injected interrupt is lost. For example: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- kvm_riscv_vcpu_set_interrupt(VS_SOFT) set_bit(VS_SOFT, irqs_pending) kvm_riscv_vcpu_sync_interrupts() sees guest-cleared HVIP.VSSIP sets irqs_pending_mask clear_bit(IRQ_VS_SOFT, irqs_pending) set_bit(VS_SOFT, irqs_pending_mask) kvm_vcpu_kick() After that interleaving, a later flush can update HVIP without VSSIP even though a new virtual interrupt was injected. In practice, the guest can remain blocked in WFI with work pending. The same pending/mask protocol is shared by VS soft interrupts, PMU overflow delivery, and AIA high interrupt synchronization, so the race is not limited to one interrupt source. Fix this by serializing all updates to irqs_pending and irqs_pending_mask with a per-vCPU raw spinlock. This keeps the pending bit and the dirty mask as one state transition across: - set/unset interrupt - guest HVIP sync - interrupt flush to guest CSR state - vCPU reset - AIA CSR writes that clear dirty state Use non-atomic bitmap operations while holding the lock. Hold the lock across the AIA sync, flush, and pending checks as well, so both bitmap words share the same serialization domain. This intentionally replaces the existing lockless protocol instead of trying to repair it with additional barriers. The problem is not memory ordering on a single field; it is that two separate bitmaps encode one shared state machine while both producers and sync paths can modify them. A per-vCPU raw spinlock keeps the fix small, local, and suitable for backporting. 2026-07-14RISC-V: KVM: Inject instruction access fault on unmapped guest fetchQingwei Hu1-0/+19
When an instruction guest-page-fault targets a GPA that is not backed by any memslot, KVM has no MMIO emulation path for the fetch. Load and store guest-page faults can be routed through MMIO emulation, but an instruction fetch has no data payload or access size for userspace to complete in the same way. Treat this case as an architectural access fault in the guest. On bare metal, fetching from an inaccessible physical address raises an instruction access fault for the supervisor to handle through its trap vector. Reflect EXC_INST_ACCESS back to the guest so the guest observes the same class of exception rather than leaving the fetch as a host-handled condition. stval contains the virtual address of the portion of the instruction that caused the fault, while sepc points to the beginning of the instruction. 2026-07-13RISC-V: KVM: Zicbo[m|z|p] block sizes should be always present in ONE_REGAnup Patel1-32/+6
All config and core registers of the KVM RISC-V ONE_REG interface are expected to be always available to the KVM user-space and the KVM get-reg-list selftest assumes these registers to be as base registers. Currently, the Zicbo[m|z|p] block size config registers are only available when corresponding ISA extension is present on the host which breaks the above expectation. In fact, KVM get-reg-list selftest fails when any of the Zicbo[m|z|p] ISA extension is not present on host. To address this issue, drop the ISA extension checks from kvm_riscv_vcpu_get/set_reg_config() and copy_config_reg_indices() functions.
