2023-08-24perf pmu: Lazily add JSON eventsIan Rogers1-0/+4
Rather than scanning all JSON events and adding them when a PMU is created, add the alias when the JSON event is needed. Average core PMU scanning run time reduced by 60.2%. Average PMU scanning run time reduced by 15%. Page faults with no events reduced by 74 page faults, 4% of total. 2023-08-24perf pmu-events: Add pmu_events_table__find_event()Ian Rogers1-0/+5
jevents stores events sorted by name. Add a find function that will binary search event names avoiding the need to linearly search through events. Add a test in tests/pmu-events.c. If the PMU or event aren't found -1000 is returned. If the event is found but no callback function given, 0 is returned. This allows the find function also act as a test for existence. 2023-08-24perf pmu-events: Reduce processed events by passing PMUIan Rogers1-1/+3
Pass the PMU to pmu_events_table__for_each_event so that entries that don't match don't need to be processed by callback. If a NULL PMU is passed then all PMUs are processed. 'perf bench internals pmu-scan's "Average PMU scanning" performance is reduced by about 5% on an Intel tigerlake. 2023-06-15perf stat,jevents: Introduce Default tags for the default modeKan Liang1-0/+1
Introduce a new metricgroup, Default, to tag all the metric groups which will be collected in the default mode. Add a new field, DefaultMetricgroupName, in the JSON file to indicate the real metric group name. It will be printed in the default output to replace the event names. There is nothing changed for the output format. On SPR, both TopdownL1 and TopdownL2 are displayed in the default output. On ARM, Intel ICL and later platforms (before SPR), only TopdownL1 is displayed in the default output. 2023-05-10perf metric: JSON flag to not group events if gathering a metric groupIan Rogers1-0/+1
Some metric groups have metrics that don't have fully overlapping events, meaning that the group's events become unique event groups that may need to multiplex with each other. This can be particularly unfortunate when the groups wouldn't need to multiplex because there are sufficient hardware counters. Add a flag so that if recording a metric group then the metrics within the group needn't use groups for their events. The flag is added to Intel TopdownL1 and TopdownL2 metrics. 2023-02-19perf pmu-events: Make the metric_constraint an enumIan Rogers1-1/+24
Rename metric_constraint to event_grouping to better explain what the variable is used for. Switch to use an enum for encoding instead of a string. Rather than just no constraint/grouping information or "NO_NMI_WATCHDOG", have 4 enum values. The values encode whether to group or not, and two cases where the behavior is dependent on either the NMI watchdog being enabled or SMT being enabled. Previous changes separated the uses of pmu_event and pmu_metric, however, both structures contained all the variables of event and metric. This change removes the event variables from metric and the metric variables from event. Note, this change removes the setting of evsel's metric_name/expr as these fields are no longer part of struct pmu_event. The metric remains but is no longer implicitly requested when the event is. This impacts a few Intel uncore events, however, as the ScaleUnit is shared by the event and the metric this utility is questionable. Also the MetricNames look broken (contain spaces) in some cases and when trying to use the functionality with '-e' the metrics fail but regular metrics with '-M' work. 2022-08-13perf pmu-events: Don't assume pmu_event is an arrayIan Rogers1-0/+3
The current code assumes that a struct pmu_event can be iterated over forward until a NULL pmu_event is encountered. This makes it difficult to refactor pmu_event. Add a loop function taking a callback function that's passed the struct pmu_event. This way the pmu_event is only needed for one element and not an entire array. Switch existing code iterating over the pmu_event arrays to use the new loop function pmu_events_table_for_each_event. The pmu_events_map is generated at compile time and used for lookup. For testing purposes we need to swap the map being used. Having the pmu_events_map be non-const is misleading as it may be an out argument. Make it const and update uses so they work on const too. Initially, every time we want to add new terms like chip, core thread etc, we need to create corrsponding fields in pmu_events and event struct. This patch adds an enum called 'aggr_mode_class' which store all these aggregation like perchip/percore. It also adds new field 'aggr_mode' to capture these terms. Now, if user wants to add any new term, they just need to add it in the enum defined. 2019-10-19perf list: Hide deprecated events by defaultJin Yao1-0/+1
There are some deprecated events listed by perf list. But we can't remove them from perf list with ease because some old scripts may use them. Deprecated events are old names of renamed events. When an event gets renamed the old name is kept around for some time and marked with Deprecated. The newer Intel event lists in the tree already have these headers. So we need to keep them in the event list, but provide a new option to show them. The new option is "--deprecated". With this patch, the deprecated events are hidden by default but they can be displayed when option "--deprecated" is enabled. Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-02-08perf jevents: Add support for parsing uncore json filesAndi Kleen1-0/+3
Handle the "Unit" field, which is needed to find the right PMU for an event. We call it "pmu" and convert it to the perf pmu name with an uncore prefix. Handle the "ExtSel" field, which just extends the event mask with an additional bit. Handle the "Filter" field which adds parameters to the main event to configure filtering. Handle the "Unit" field which declares the unit the values should be scaled too (similar to what the kernel exports) Set up the "perpkg" field for uncore events so that perf knows they are per package (similar to what the kernel exports) Then output the fields into the pmu-events data structures which are compiled into perf. We expect architectures to create JSON files describing the performance monitoring (PMU) events that each CPU model/family of the architecture supports. Eg: for the CPU model "Silvermont_core": $ ls tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/Silvermont_core Floating-point.json Memory.json Other.json Pipelining.json Virtualmemory.json Finally, to allow multiple CPU models to share a single set of JSON files, architectures must provide a mapping between a model and its set of events: $ grep Silvermont tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/mapfile.csv GenuineIntel-6-4D,V13,Silvermont_core,core GenuineIntel-6-4C,V13,Silvermont_core,core which maps each CPU, identified by [vendor, family, model, version, type] to a directory of JSON files. Thus two (or more) CPU models support the set of PMU events listed in the directory. tools/perf/pmu-events/arch/x86/Silvermont_core/ Given this organization of files, the program, jevents: - locates all JSON files for each CPU-model of the architecture, - parses all JSON files for the CPU-model and generates a C-style "PMU-events table" (pmu-events.c) for the model - locates a mapfile for the architecture - builds a global table, mapping each model of CPU to the corresponding PMU-events table. The 'pmu-events.c' is generated when building perf and added to libperf.a. The global table pmu_events_map[] table in this pmu-events.c will be used in perf in a follow-on patch. If the architecture does not have any JSON files or there is an error in processing them, an empty mapping file is created. This would allow the build of perf to proceed even if we are not able to provide aliases for events. The parser for JSON files allows parsing Intel style JSON event files. This allows to use an Intel event list directly with perf. The Intel event lists can be quite large and are too big to store in unswappable kernel memory. The conversion from JSON to C-style is straight forward. The parser knows (very little) Intel specific information, and can be easily extended to handle fields for other CPUs. The parser code is partially shared with an independent parsing library, which is 2-clause BSD licensed. To avoid any conflicts I marked those files as BSD licensed too. As part of perf they become GPLv2.
