Back out changes adding 'make depend' to recommended build process.
As Theo gently pointed out, this was bullshit. A normal 'make build'
does indeed do all the required 'make depend's. I could have sworn I
tested that and found it wanting. Sigh. mea culpa.
As atonement I will be cleaning up release.8 to implement several of
Theo's suggestions.
